2019-20 U.S. Ladies Figure Skating

The fact that the ISU has to moderate their social media is really sad. Anyone who feels the need to berate a child on the internet because of a stupid jump needs to take a long hard look at their lives. It’s okay to question a technical call- but not to insult or say unkind things about the skater. As fans we need to make sure that behavior isn’t welcome in the sport.

Alysa is making really good progress which is the most important thing- she’s one of the most exciting US ladies skaters in a long time. The thing that impressed me about her is her consistency. The US has always had brilliant skaters- but brilliant skaters don’t always turn out brilliant performances. I am excited by how good the young skaters are- they push each other in a positive way.

Her quads/triple axels are more consistent than most ladies' triples. And that is extremely impressive and important when it comes to PCS building and of course, getting good scores. Out of the 10 quads/triple axels she's attempted internationally on this year, she's fallen on one. Thats a 90% success rate! Its unreal.

I strongly suspect that she will do more than one quad at the final. Maybe three. At least two. By next year though I have no doubt she will match Trusova.

Ting has a beautiful FS this year. She definitely fell apart a bit in the second half of her program but if she can be consistent this program will make an impression.

Ting has to get a handle on not losing the performance when she makes a mistake and show some fight. She falls apart too easily though not on the level of someone like Amber who she shouldn't be losing too.

Amber also has many lovely qualities. She is fast and her jumps have nice pop. This free skate was a huge improvement. She needs to refine her skating. I hope she is better by Skate America.

I saw Karen Chen at a performance in Boston. I must say, her spins and jumps are amazing in person! Really glad to hear that she's back competing after so long. She'll always be known to me as one who showed Sotnikova how to actually skate with a prop, however.

Amber Glenn is a lovely skater when on, who has had big problems with nerves. This was a good result for her as she fought through. Hopefully it gave her a lot of confidence so she can show more in future.

Let's correct that to: her quads/triple axels are more consistent than most mens' quads and triple axels. I wonder if she'll go to Regionals and Sectionals. Although she has a bye, it'll be good to compete before Nationals. Plus, it won't take away spots from other ladies trying to qualify because she has a bye.

Imagine having just gotten off of a major injury that kept her off the ice for about three months and being catapulted into her first major assignment of the season? For a nervous competitor such as Ting, that's even more of an insurmountable task than it already is. Also, Ting literally started jumping a month ago and she's already capable of landing a beautiful 3Lz+3T. This was her VERY FIRST competition of the season where she attempted combos AND 7 triples. If anything, this just shows how strong Ting has grown mentally and physically. I'm not trying to make excuses for her botched second half of the Long, but with all things considered, this is a good stepping stone towards her Grand Prix debut. Best of luck to our little artist on ice.

Many congratulations extended to Amber Glenn who fought through her Long and ended her long lasting curse of falling apart in the Long. If she can improve on this score and manage to wow at Skate America, I think we're in for an Amber fighting for the World spots alongside Bradie, Mariah, Karen, and Ting. Also, had she not popped the 3Lz, she would've scored 190+. Best of luck to her as well.

This upcoming week, Gabriella Izzo and Sarah Jung will represent the US in Croatia. Izzo will try to improve on her performance from Latvia whilst Jung, who is debuting, will likely attempt the 3A or a 3A+Eu+3S in her Free. At the senior level, Mariah Bell will begin her season at Nebelhorn. Another week of great skates for sure. Best of luck to our ladies.

Schedule
- September 25-28, Junior Grand Prix Croatia (Sarah Jung and Gabriella Izzo)
- September 25-28, Nebelhorn Trophy (Mariah Bell)

Next Week
- October 2-5, Junior Grand Prix Italy (Kate Wang and Isabelle Inthisone)

Amber ha already competed four or five times this summer and has had plenty of time to break in her programs. Ting has been dealing with her injuries since March and just got her jumps back a few months ago. She’s technically coming in this season way behind the gate in comparison to Amber.

This is why I keep saying skaters need to compete more to break in their programs. Starr has competed three times already and her programs are nearly settled. I wish Ting could have at least done Golden West before coming to USIC. Skating fresh makes it harder to rely on muscle memory, added with the presssure of international competition. It makes sense Ting would go right back into the same habit of letting her program go like early last season.

The good news is Ting managed to conquer it at JWs. This was a good wake up call and reminder. It will help her be more focused the next time and focus more or putting out clean programs in the future. I remember when Other skates kicked off with a weak competition, falling into old habits like underrotations and flutzes. The immediately corrected themselves and improved quickly afterwards.

I agree with not wanting to overwork Ting. I do think she needs the higher-pressure Challenger outings before the GPs though (as long as she's healthy). They can only help her built up her mental game.

Alysa is of course on everyone's mind as a major US ladies competitor.. rightfully so. She was wonderful at the Baltic Cup! I also enjoyed both programs skated by 13-year old Lindsay Thorngren; her tech meets high standard and artistry is lovely.. will enjoy following her as her elements and expression mature... felt the same regarding 15-year old Isabelle Inthisone at Riga Cup..

wooo. Hopefully, this helps her mentally, eventhough she never can do it in program. and if she can... that would be epic.

I think Gracie is capable of doing it competitively. She has always been a strong jumper. consistently it may take time. but regardless nice!!!! She looks really solid!

With Gracie confirming her first competitive event of the year being at Regionals, we just have to wait for Polina's return as well. Considering that she's competed at TWO club events this year, Polina seems poised to go the Regional to Sectional route as well.

Nationals will be bursting to the seams with talented ladies: Bradie Tennell, Mariah Bell, Karen Chen, Polina Edmunds, Gracie Gold, Starr Andrews, Ting Cui, Hanna Harrell, Alysa Liu, Gabriella Izzo, Emilia Murdock, Megan Wessenberg, Sarah Jung, and Amber Glenn. Hopefully we'll have 24+ ladies competing this year.

Also, the Junior ladies' division will be insanely packed with Mia Kalin, Isabeau Levito (should she be able to compete), Isabelle Inthisone, Kate Wang, Lindsay Thorngren, Calista Choi, and many more. Very exciting developments in the lower ranks.
Comebacks are always tough.
Let's wait and see how Gracie does at her first competition and only then should we be making any predictions.
