2019-20 U.S. Ladies Figure Skating

There does seem to be a crazy amount of scrutiny on Alysa’s jump rotation. I don’t understand why people have it out for a young girl whose clearly working hard and loving what it is she does but when have figure skating fans ever made sense? The toxicity needs to be stopped, these girls are not mentally equipped to see all that hate and everyone is plugged in nowadays.

People hide behind “i’m just being constructive” and use that as an excuse to berate the legitimacy of placement and to question if skaters they don’t like are deserving and it’s nuts.

This forum is one of the better spots to discuss skating and I still think some lines are crossed here.

Alysa is a great competitor and can stand under pressure. I hope she'll improve her skating skills through the season. She is my favorite junior ladies. Congratulations to Alysa!
Lindsay Thorngren delivered quite well, her spins are good, she needs to fix her jumps.

Having the skater in my avatar doesn't mean I don't equally like the other skater who is not... anyways it is pointless to continue arguing about this. I see what I see and you see what you see. Just because I disagree with you does not mean I'm bias. Anyways, I love Alysa and me pointing out her mistake does not take anything away from how amazing what she is doing is. Also Russian ladies don't really have to do with this thread anyways. And Alysa is one of my favorites, so yes I will call out an UR from my "favorite" if I see one.

To end this comment on a positive note, go Alysa! She's accomplished so much in just two JGPs, and is improving by the minute. And I'm sure she'll work on that lutz until she does rotate it, because that seems like the type of person she is. :)

She already rotated it to the standard the ISU has decided to consistently use. Two different technical callers felt it was fully rotated.

I really hope you're not talking about my comment. I have said nothing but nice things about Alysa and just because I mention one error doesn't mean I have it out for her? I don't get why everyone is so defensive. I have given her a million compliments, but because I mention something that could be improved I am "berating the legitimacy of placement"? I have stated so many times how she absolutely was deserving of her win, how amazing the 4Lz is and how amazing she is in general. I don't get how calling one jump under-rotated is considered hate. But this isn't a fan fest, and we are allowed to say things that aren't 100% positive. So please tell me you are talking about someone else, and if not, what "lines were crossed" in my comment?

The amount of dislikes Alysa’s Free Skate video has drives me nuts. The bottomline is some people get really mad when a non-Russian becomes a podium threat.

I wouldn't assume that. There are plenty of Green Eyed Monsters right here in the U.S. of A. Always has been, always will be. Because parents invest every dime and every minute of their lives in their snowflake's skating career. They lose perspective. Normally decent people lose their minds when jealousy takes over. My guess is that Russian fans are the LEAST likely to denigrate Liu. They are fairly matter-a-fact about results and merit and accepting what is.

Alysa has more Russian fans than American ones if you look at her followers and likes. Most of the dislikes are coming from European and American anti-fans. Also, it’s literally the same people saying the same trash talk on every Alysa related post. Why focus on the few 100 and not the 10,000 others who have lauded Alysa and are rooting for her every day? As for the videos on YouTube, everyone gets dislikes... Alysa’s videos just attract more because she wins her competitions and topples her competitors. Be prepared for the upcoming season because once we have more medal contenders, the hate will only grow. Let’s stop the negative talk and focus on protecting a talented young lady. Best of luck in everything that she does.

For a bit of positivity, Alysa’s videos are only second to Kamila in terms of MOST LIKED on Twitter and Instagram. Also, Alysa is only second to Kamila in terms of most viewed videos on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube. Also, Alysa’s videos do get around 500-1000 likes so don’t just focus on the few hundred people who are probably keyboard warriors but also the kind of people who knock over little kids just to get a picture with her. Bullies are cowards, simple as that. End of conversation.

If you like her so much, why the snark each time you post about a jump that you--not the judges--call UR? Do you really think Alysa will be reading your comment and trying to improve as a result? And you state things as fact that are not. There is only one camera angle available to viewers and it looks fully rotated. The tech caller thought so, too. At most, you have a difference of opinion. But offering it as an opinion, doesn't spark the same negative reaction, does it?

What snark are you talking about? What? I said many positive things about her in the same comment, but respectfully mentioned areas she could improve, how was it snark? And where did I ever say I thought Alysa would read it? I didn't, because I never thought that. All I said was that I'm sure she's working on it. Not because of anyone saying anything, but because I'm sure her and her coaches analyze her performances carefully and look for things to work on. And yes, it is a difference of opinion, and maybe I should've been more careful with my wording, but you know what, everyone saying it wasn't UR also stated it as a fact, and I don't see you coming after them. I even mentioned that I understood why the tech caller called it rotated and recognized that they can only watch it in real time etc.

And to the insinuation that I want to cause a negative reaction... no. I don't understand how you get that. Did you read my comment? Because it was filled with positive things about Alysa. And as soon as someone mentioned a difference of opinion I wanted to just recognize the difference of opinion and move on, but people kept responding and attacking my opinion as "hate". I even offered up more praise of Alysa to try to move the conversation in a more positive direction but that didn't work... Anyways I'm pretty sure we're actually more on the same page than you think. I love Alysa, and think she is really doing great. All I pointed out that in my opinion, after review of the slo-mo it was UR, and thats something she could work on. But I recognized her achievements in the same comment. I'm sorry if you thought there was snark but there really wasn't... but feel free to point out language you thought came off as hate.

I just had a look at Amber Glenn's SP. It was great. She really has deep edges and powerful jumps. Wishing her the best in her LP.

It was under if you don’t count her pre-rotation which is about 200 degrees. If you count her pre-rotation, it was fully rotated. The thing is, judges and tech callers don’t care about pre-rotation and it is nowhere to be seen in the I.S.U. Rulebook. So for people saying the judges are corrupt, they’re simply following the guidelines of the rulebook. That’s why people like Vincent can pre-rotate 180-190 degrees and still have their quads called clean. I will say that Alysa does have a slightly higher degree of pre-rotation than most followed by Anna’s 4Lz which was also under if you didn’t count her 4Lz... but I don’t see anyone sending her death threats. I guess rules only apply to skaters people dislike.

someone is trolling, can smell that from miles away and someone's first post. As for Alysa's 4LZ IMHO it is one of the cleaner 4lZ landed and recognized by ladies this season. It is simply remarkable, also my 2 cents don't feed the troll.

:( ISU had to intervene because the hate comments against Alysa on their social media accounts was so severe.

I am happy the ISU is monitoring this and taking it seriously. It looks like they’ve also disabled comments on the post right after that one featuring the ladies medalists. It’s sad that it has come to that, but even sadder that adults feel the need to take down a 14-year-old behind the safety and comfort of their keyboards.

People were sending death threats? Was that on the Facebook page? Thats horrible. I hope her team shields her from these types of things. Some people really like to resist changes in the sport. When someone does a quad, sometimes you'll see more hateful comments than congratulatory ones, which is messed up imo.

I really enjoy Alysa's artistry and technical excellence and she has given some of my favorite recent performances. One thing I noticed is that she only got 3rd place PCS in her freeskate, almost 28 points lower than her tech score, which is the most extreme discrepancy I think I have ever seen before. While I thought Viktoria and Anastasia skated well, I believe Alyssa was obviously underscored in PCS at this competition because her score was almost 5 points lower than her last competition in Lake Placid, even though her tech score was almost 4 points higher in Gdansk and even though her performance level was close to the same. While I think Alyssa can improve her speed some, this is only a portion of one criteria in PCS and I personally enjoy her artistry, interpretation of music, fluidity of movement and posture the most of any Junior I have seen this season, even though her PCS is far lower than a number of skaters. I also think Alyssa was underscored because she had already won her first competition with consistency and US Nationals last season when most skaters in the past with such consistency and technical excellence have received a PCS bonus. However, in stark contrast,Alyssa is getting an extreme "deflation" in score between her two competitions despite her consistency. Besides, better skating skills are often given lower PCS anyway and it is only one of the criteria.
