2019-20 U.S. Ladies Figure Skating

I think Sarah is currently without a coach--not sure what happened or if anyone has info. I agree she is lovely to watch and was lucky enough to share ice with her a few times. And in my book, the more triple axels out there, the better!

I would be proud of the two American ladies at YOG. I enjoyed both of their skates. Never mind growth spurts, they skated well. Not perhaps into medal contention, but even so, good skates, not nerve ridden, and well executed.

With Ting and Hanna gone, 4-5 is wide open for Amber, Starr, Emily, Karen, and Sarah. If Emily is clean, I think she'll end up fourth and be sent to either 4CC or Junior Worlds OR both.

Predictions
1-3. Mariah Bell/Alysa Liu/Bradie Tennell
4. Emily Zhang
5. Amber Glenn
6. Starr Andrews
7. Karen Chen
8. Sarah Jung
9. Gracie Gold
10. Courtney Hicks

I hope and pray that Hanna and Ting will both be fully recovered, healthy, and come out banging next season. Best of luck to our ladies.

She doesn’t have the junior minimums yet. Skaters have to compete in a junior competition to get them. I understand the rationale, the skater may not be able to do the required jump/spin and the choreographical sequence inflates the score. However, it feels like over kill at times.

Losing Hanna and Ting for basically all season was a blow not just for the two of them trying to work their way up the ladder in the US but for US ladies in general which right now is suffering from a lack of depth especially now with both of them out. The only way the field will get stronger will come from the younger skaters since among the veterans only Bradie and Mariah are competitive.

If a young skater like Emily places & scores high enough at Nationals, there should be time to earn junior minimums afterward. Tyler Pierce, I think, did it the last year she went to Junior Worlds.

Agreed! Plenty of time & opportunity to earn that JW min at internationals slated after Nationals.
Also, I am saddened to read of Hannah's withdraw - that, in addition to Ting's, pretty much wipes out the newish skaters who shined at last years nationals. Wishing all the ladies their best skates in Greensboro!

:sad21: I'm sorry for her. It must be serious for her to withdraw from Nationals. Was there a reason given?

Phil said that both Hanna & Ting are out with injuries; he did not describe the injuries. He noted that this means 2 out of last year’s Top 5 will be absent.

I know it was a junior event with slightly different rules but the score was low for Emily at Mentor- GRacie could beat her if you look at Emilys score of 105 recently in the freeskate. wouldn't it be wonderful to see Gracie on the podium including pewter.

Except the reigning National champion;).

I agree, though. I've been really sad to be missing Ting, and I'm sorry to see Hanna missing out on most of her international season as well. These girls & Alysa have really been pushing the technical bar at home--first against each other and then against the larger field--for the past three seasons. I hope they heal well.

It was a senior event.

Emily beat Gracie head-to-head at both Regionals and Sectionals.

True, but Gracie improved so much between the two competitions so it’s harder to gauge how much Gracie has progressed since then and if nerves or whatever was going on with Emily at mentor cup will impact her performance at nationals. I think aside from the probability of the top three, there is a wide array of who could be in the top ten.

Congrats Audrey for 7th in YOG. Two new pb’s as well, she showed her potential here wonderfully. If only she could fix that wrap on her jumps, it’s causing the under-rotations that keep her from doing more. Great skates here though, not a bad finish at all either.

Kate Wang dropped to 13th. Tough skate in the fs, she popped her two big combos and fell on a popped single sal in combo as well. We will still remember that beautiful sp though Kate, keep your head up and keep working hard!

In Audrey Shin's lovely thank-you message on Instagram just now, she mentioned that in May, she had right ankle surgery.

I do not recall whether or not she previously had disclosed the surgery?

Her Insta account is private, so I cannot give a link.

Anyway, it was great to see Audrey and Kate compete at YOG.

I hope they both will get drawn for the mixed NOC team event.
(The draw was scheduled to start a few minutes ago.)

ETA:

Per the draw, Kate Wang will be on Team 1 (Team Focus), as will U.S. pair Cate Fleming and Jedidiah Isbell.

Audrey did not get drawn for the team event.
Per the predetermined structure of the team event, only three of the ladies who placed 6th thru 11th will compete in the team event.

Congratulations to Emily Zhang for silver at her first international. :yay:

(Emily and Gracie both improved a lot between regionals and sectionals.
I have no idea who will place higher at Nats.)

Emilt tends to tank the short and comes roaring back in the long. I think it has happened that way at Nationals 2 years running.
