2019-20 U.S. Ladies Figure Skating

Boy, you guys are a tough crowd. Alyssa did great; good for her. Mariah was sublime. Brady gave it her all. What's not to be happy about?

Do you think we should take away Michelle Kwan’s, Tara Lipinski’s and Mirai Nagasu’s National titles that were won when they were juniors by today’s standards?
 
I don't understand people being mad about a junior skater being allowed to skate in a senior event.

Yes she was allowed to skate but she had to bring quads and triple axels to win. You can argue that she's 14 and jumps are easier but she is held to a higher standard because there is no way they would have let her win with just normal triples. The hurdles were already raised for Alysa to compensate for any advantage she may have as a youngster. Not her fault she's got the jumps and won. If she were any other normal junior she would have been buried in the bottom somewhere but Alysa isn't normal.

As for performance I must be a tasteless gimp because I've watched that "juniorish" performance 5 times now and will probably keep watching it.

She nailed that performance. It was worlds apart from her performance at JGPF. She really brought it so she could keep up with the older ladies.

In hindsight it was probably a good thing she lost to the lovely Kamila. I felt like she went up a level performance wise because she was a bit of a mess at JGPF.
 
I just don't get all the negativity towards Alysa. Like it or not, she is the future in US Figure Skating. For a 14-year-old to get out there and skate as she did is pretty special in my books. She must have nerves of steel I thoroughly enjoyed her FS. I think she did a fantastic job. She seems pretty grounded and a lot more mature since last year. Mariah was great as well. Best Free Skate she ever had. It is too bad she could not have won but she will just have to step it up, like learn a Triple Axel.
Disappointed for Bradie. I really wanted her to win but not to be. And for those complaining about the importance of the jumps. Figure Skating has always been about the jumps. If you can't do the jumps you don't win. The fact that some are pushing the envelope makes every skater strive harder. And to me, that is a good thing.

That's Benny the ice skating dog... he assists with puck drops at major league hockey games, does skate with me events for charity etc.. he was a shelter dog adopted just before they were going to euthanize him... the lady who owns him is a skater, noticed his jntelligence and performing abilities, got him custom-made skates and out onto the ice, rest is history. So, predictions for international teams?

Worlds - Bradie and Mariah
Jr. Worlds - Alysa, Lindsay, and Isabelle or Calista
Four Continents - Bradie, Mariah, and Karen or Amber
Challenge Cup - Sierra, Rena, and Courtney

Also, how exciting is it that Isabeau will be eligible for the Junior Grand Prix next season?
 
How about we give Alysa some credit - she is only 14 and has grown 5 inches. That takes a lot of adjusting to figure out how to develop the strength to use those longer limbs to develop more power, grace and maturity. She is a work in progress and I for one am pleased and impressed at her progress so far. I just finished watching the entire field of Euro ladies many who are also growing and changing and learning. Alysa looks very good in comparison.
 
How much has Alysa grown over the last year? A growth spurt will actually help her look more mature and not so young and it will give her more of a presence on the ice. Tiny skaters like Miyahara just don't look as impressive on the ice as someone tall like Gracie.
 
Mariah is 23, Alysa is 14- I don’t expect Alysa to skate with the same maturity as Mariah.

This idea that Nationals over-scoring is going to make Alysa not improve her skating skills is silly. I’m pretty sure all the competitors know that nationals scoring is a joke. Alysa knows how her scores measure up internationally and has said multiple times she is working on her skating skills- she has even taken lessons from Carolina Kostner. She knows what she has to work on.

Whether or not juniors should be allowed to skate senior when they are not age eligible is its own question.

The reality is that skating is changing, it’s always changing. That isn’t necessarily good or bad, it just is. I say this as someone whose favorite skater is Jason Brown so trust me when I say that I find well rounded skating more enjoyable than just jumps. But ladies skating is changing and USFS isn’t going to shove their current best chance at international success in the ladies field to the side.
 
Can anyone please confirm this because I cannot access the US Figure Skating Technical Minimums page but according to some, the technical minimum is based on 2/3 of the National Champion’s total technical score. Thus, to qualify for next season’s Nationals, skaters must achieve a total technical minimum score of around 88-89 as that is 2/3 of Alysa’s total technical score. That would equate to about 7-8 seniors, 4-5 juniors moving up to seniors, and 2 returning skaters for a total of 13-14 ladies who have realistic chances of meeting the minimum.

Re: 4CC, I'll be interested to see whether that fits into Karen's schedule or not. I'm not sure, based on the season she had prior to nationals, that she would have been expecting/budgeting time to go to another ISU championship right after.

But if she does want to go, she's earned right of first refusal, as I see it.

The short program for ladies looked absolutely empty on tv.

There were no real successful quads and very few 3As between 2007 and 2018 in senior ladies either so that can't be blamed for the lack of US ladies success.

I definitely think the lack of ladies success in the US wasn’t because the talent wasn’t there it was just we lacked someone putting it all together when it mattered.
 
SPs are usually empty unless they occur on a weekend, as the Mens SP did. Many people buy tickets for the final weekend of Nationals. Only all-event ticket holders go to midweek SPs, and then not all of the all-event ticketholders go to every event.

All I can say is... I pray USFS changes this rule, otherwise nationals for ladies will be quite sad next year.

It looked very bad on tv, just completely empty stands and knowing how expensive tickets to nationals are, I wonder how the USFS fails to market this so badly. The long program had a ton of empty seats and closed sections you could see on TV as well. When I went to 4CC Ladies Long last year I was watching from a full side of the arena and across from me the whole half of the arena was entirely empty. It’s pretty sad how far figure skating had fallen.

I do agree with moonvine that Gracie drew in more people to nationals this year. I almost dropped everything to fly to nationals when I found out she’d made it. She was definitely a star in the sport in the US after the 2014 olympics.
