2020–21 Canadian Figure Skating

Ever since the World Championships to be held in Montreal last year when COVID hit, it's been a tough comeback for Canadian figure skating especially with some of our veteran skaters no longer competing, we have a new crop of skaters earning their spots on the world circuit. Kudos to Piper and Paul for taking Bronze at the 2021 Worlds also to Keegan Messing for winning Bronze at the 2020 Skate America Championships. It's been a struggle for our skaters to train and compete as most competitive skating has been cancelled. I see Canada came 6th at the Team championships just recently held. It's a new team and they are rebuilding. I'm looking forward to seeing more skating return to Canada once COVID is once more under control. Go Team Canada!

you beat me to it :) but i think our posts are complementary so i will leave mine up lol
Thanks for your comments. I am not involved in the detail of he said, she said so the context helps. I was offering up my thoughts and opinions as an observer....... not in competition as to who is right or wrong.

It's alot more than that. @mods, can this please be moved to the Canadian skating thread?

context is everything when it comes to a new event. the team event in figure skating is "artificial" The olympic committee values more and more mixed events, so sports where man and women can participate together. So, they create a whole bunch of events or admitted some new events. For instance, mixed doubles curling: this format already existed (if i am not mistaken) but was admitted to the games. Then, they created events like luge team relay, and alpine skiing mixed relays, swimming mixed relays... All these relays are easy to conceive and do make sense because times are added up and there is a flow about how they work out... for instance, in luge, the athletes have to knock a plank upon arrival to let the next athletes go down the track... so it's like passing a baton. In swimming, there is no difference.. it's just a relay... but made up of 2 men and 2 women. Strategy might be interesting though as some teams decide to start and finish strong with men while others have put men first and finished with women, hoping the adrenaline would make them hang on to a huge lead.... etc.... In figure skating, the event is very artificially conceived with ranking points. Athletes may feel a bit more concerned if scores were calculated... but then, at the same time, ranking points made it very easy for the general public to understand the format. It also made it more likely to use strategy as ranking points are easier to evaluate in terms of who is competing (for instance, Canada making sure that Virtue and Moir skate both the RD and the FD as the Russians may be too close for the gold... not knowing that Patrick would actually win the LP.... etc)...

We have had only two events so far. In Sochi, I think only Russia cared about the team medal... they were at home. However, in Korea, the Canadian team, as it has been said earlier in the thread, made it a priority. I am sure that China would love a medal in Beijing and that Italy will work very hard for it in Milan 2026. In the end, it will bring more and more attention and earn more and more respect. Some may argue that it will never be as big as winning a gold in your own discipline. That's fair. Others will argue that being an Olympic champion is hard enough as it is to achieve, and that it is huge, no matter the event. I wonder if those athletes who win mixed doubles curling feel that the title is less of a big deal than winning with your traditional same gender foursome.

As we have seen throughout the years and events, figure skating is a very old-fashioned and traditional sport. All these changes take so much time to be accepted. As a matter of fact, some people still talk about the 6.0 scoring system... ermm hello??? it's been nearly 20 years that this change was made... ;)

Because the team event has fewer skaters, it is also more accessible to casual viewers. And though there are fewer skaters, they cover the full range of (Olympic) skill levels, making the results clearer and easier to understand.

The team event can also highlight skaters who become lost in the larger individual event: Bychenko and Rizzo anyone?

something blue... feathers? interesting... paul can wear just any colour but he will be extra good looking in blue ;)

So, James/Radford is definitely happening, then. And evidently Meagan is quite angry about it.

So is this because she wants to do shows and he wants to go back to competitive skating? I don’t feel it’s right to force him into something he doesn’t want to do. If their goals no longer align, that sucks but it’s time to move on, not slander people on social media.

Cannot resist to plug in although busy at work.... Oh, I very much hope Meagan is already regrecting her comment! I hope she wrote this in the heat of the moment/emotions...What is so bad for Eric to contiue skating?? She has to be glad about him. Eric is not her belonging. How did feel Robin when Aliona decided to continue skating and not to skatewith him in shows ?? Oh, my, human passions...
I hope she will calm down and instead of being upset will be rather supportive and wishing him succed.

I wonder if she found out from a 3rd party and not him directly which is why she is so upset (more about the way she found out rather than him continuing). I do think Vanessa/Eric would be an interesting team to watch

However it was or is.... I think, that we all sometimes tend to overract....
From the botton of my heart I wish Vanesa and Eric to succed; to skate to their full potential and to bring lot of joy to the skating world and to themselves. They both are talanted, and I am sure they wil be great together. I wish them the best. And also to Meagan.

Sensitive topic for sure. She probably should have heard it from Eric himself and I can understand her frustration if she didn’t.
Perhaps she wanted to continue also? I know she mentioned before how she misses competition.
With that in mind, Eric can do as he pleases! I don’t know how long this has been brewing but really how long can they compete? They may not even be able to gel for Oly and can they really go another 4 years?

Thing is, none of us know what has been said. We don’t know what Meagan and Eric discussed or promised or committed to, whether it be shows, return to competition or maybe it was nothing at all. Unless either party comes out and spills, we’ll be left guessing. Everything is speculation so far.

Meagan is obviously upset by what has happened, and it’ll be interesting to see who comments - there’s already one from Lyubov 👀

I also think James/Radford is a ridiculous idea. I have little respect for Vanessa after her silence on her partners actions.

I mostly feel sorry for Evelyn & Trennt who worked their butts off for the second Olys spot and yet will probably be dumped for the new star pair in the making.

ahhh I really feel for Walsh/Michaud. Obviously there's no guarantee that Vanessa and Eric would make the Olympic team, and I would be happy for them if they made it happen, but their comeback really puts the existing Canadian pairs in an uncomfortable situation.

I mean, Eric is taking away her ability to earn money while skating. She likely won't be hired for shows as a singles skater. Most shows already only take 1 or to pairs teams. I don't think it is wrong of her to express how she is feeling. Everyone else is speculating too. Everyone was really quick to defend Charlie, but it turned out that he did burn both of his partners. If Eric wants to come out and say something too, fine, but I don't see anything wrong with Meagan expressing herself.

The Skating Lesson reposted/shared her post on their Facebook page.
One of the comments underneath asks '...Ok but... what was Eric expected to do if she could no longer compete?...' to which Meagan herself replied 'I never said i wasn’t interested in coming back to competition. Nor was I asked 😉'
