Great Free Skate for Madeline, looking strong early in the season! 3rd in the Free Skate, 5th overall...not bad for her first outing, especially against high level competitors. Might've even been on the podium if her PCS was judged fairly, but that's to be expected.

All in all Maddy has really great programs this year, her 3Lz-3T is money, her artistry and expression has improved, and she still has a lot to build on. Looking forward to seeing her debut on the Grand Prix this year.

Thank you for posting the video. I agree with your comments. BTW - Maddy's 3Lz-3T was the second highest scoring element of the women's FS, just behind Young You's 3Lz-E-3S. I can't judge speed very well from the video so can't comment on Chuckm's view that Maddie was a bit slow. But let us hope that judges use PCS to award what they see in front of them and not reputation. But I know that reams have already been written on that subject so should save my typing fingers.

Today I will just enjoy a young skater that had a pretty good outing. Remember, her World's last March was her first big international competition and she served notice there that she isn't ordinary. Let's also hope that if the GP series gets cancelled again (please not when), Skate Canada gets her out to some European Senior B's this autumn so she gets a more international profile for the judges.

Pretty hard for anyone to judge speed particularly in the SP, when the video is almost useless. Unless a person is in the rink as a witness, the speed comment is a moot point. Maddie had 3rd highest LP score. Too bad she was undermarked in both the SP & the LP. Oh well, homecooking and reputation scoring rears its head again.
 
I attended the Cranberry Cup live and please note, I’m not Canadian and have no ax to grind. That said, my immediate reaction in real time was that Madeleine was underscored (and that Mariah Bell was overscored, for that matter.) Her triple/triple in the long in particular was very nice.

I will say that I found both her programs to be a bit snoozy. I think Asher Hill choreographs for her—correct me if I’m wrong—and if that’s so, I would have expected a bit more pizazz.

But, a solid effort. Well done!
 
A pity there aren't any Canadian women or men though. In the case of the men, it might be because it's too close to Nebelhorn (but then perhaps Keegan could have gone here?) but I would think it a lovely opportunity for the women - long before the GP starts. Or will they all go to the Canadian Challenger a bit later in the season?

This is only the second time Skate Canada has ever sent anybody to Lombardia, and they’ve only ever sent dance teams. So I’d expect to see everybody elsewhere.
 
Skate Canada needs to send as many skaters as possible to as many Senior B's as they can this year because basically of all the international skating powers Canada had next to no competitions for their skaters last season and they are behind in being prepared for Beijing.

Among the top skaters, I don't think they are behind. They proved that at 2021 Worlds.

Anyway, Piper posted a free dance hint image. It's a long and winding road leading to a door, so there's already a fairly obvious interpretation.

I'm kind of surprised that Kaiya is doing the JGP. I thought that they might try to push her as a senior. Does she have good tech? If she wins nationals, do you think they'll send her to the Olympics? I feel like I only hear people talk about her as "Canada's next big thing" but I can't remember the last time I watched her so I don't know how good she is.
 
my personal views on Kaiya is still Canada's next big thing as you mention. Yes, she could compete with the senior women and she may do so nationally, but internationally, she wouldn't get super high scores yet for GOE and PCS in seniors... Heck, Madeline was shortchanged in PCS at Cranberry and she is already a bit more refined than Kaiya. So, I think it's good she is on JGP circuit, so her skating can get recognized internationally.

Kaiya performed pretty well at the Skate NextGen Camp a few weeks ago, beating her closest competitors by almost 40 points. But like 4everchan said, she probably wouldn't get super high scores for GOE and PCS in seniors as her jumps aren't as powerful and her artistry isn't as refined as some of the senior ladies. I'm excited to see her get more competitive experience on the junior circuit this year and build on her skills.

Honestly though, the Canadian Ladies competition is so wide open this year, I would not be surprised if Kaiya was able to challenge or even win the Olympic spot if she were to compete in Seniors. She's ambitious and fairly consistent, her tech content is stronger than most of the current senior ladies, she has all her triples including a 3Lz-3T and an undeniable charm when she skates, and she's constantly improving with each outing.
 
I hope Kaiya gets the opportunity to go to a senior B this season to get those minimums, she definitely deserves it.

Great skate from Kaiya at her first JGP this season! 3rd place after the SP with a clean skate, including a backloaded 3Lz-3T...she looks so happy to just be back on the ice again, with wonderful presence and patience. Looking forward to her FS.
 
Let's talk about a man...Corey Circelli. He did so well in the SP today. Sure, a small error on the 3A but the rest of the programme was so wonderfully done. He deservedly stands in second, and there's quite a big hole between numbers 2 and 3. Such an elegant skater, wonderful to watch.
