I really love seeing whenever two rivalling figure skaters support and admire each other, and verbalize that:

quoted from @goldenskate twitter:

And:

ETA: I like a Renaissance Man. Vincent's self-description on Twitter: "Figure skater, World medalist, Olympian, poet, existential contemplator, bookworm, nature & cat admirer."
Hmm Vincent is interesting. Not quite an existentialist but contemplating. And of course I love the cat part.

Particularly if Nathan reaches his Olympic goals, I just can't see him returning to full time competitive skating. Will he say definitively I'm hanging up my skates? I doubt it. But he has seen life after competitive skating, and he appears to be ready for it.

I look at it a little differently. It's because Nathan has ambitions outside of skating that I believe if he was truly ready to move on, he would definitively say that he's hanging up his skates. By leaving the door open and saying that he would reassess after his finishes school, it doesn't sound to me like he's ready to call it quits. It'll all depend on how much he misses skating while away at school.

Re Vincent from Tom Z via Phil Hersh:

He will not compete in Warsaw.
From the description of illness/problems he has had this is a very wise decision I think. Vincent has done a great job this year and knows what he needs to do to peak on time for his important comps upcoming. No sense messing with a relatively minor competition when he has GPF, Nationals, Olympics upcoming. And now my man Jimmy can shine:)

Just out of curiosity, I know Nathan has said he wants to be a doctor, does anyone know what kind of doctor he wants to be? Hopefully one of my specialists so he can come up with a cure.

I don't see Jason or Nathan skating after this season. Vincent on the other hand will likely want to enjoy a few seasons as the top US man and start making a true name for himself.
Wouldn't it be a factor that Vincent's returning to Brown where he was unable to find satisfactory skating facilities in the past, and he has only completed one semester? Nathan OTOH has completed two years at Yale and should be able to get a degree within 1-2 years, enough time to make a comeback for the next Olympics if he wants to.

He has expressed an interest in it but he hasn't specified what type. Last they asked, he said he was still exploring, but he's majoring in statistics and data science so that it'll leave his door open to go into whichever field he ultimately decides on. Nathan has family in the med/science field. His father is a med research scientist and his sister Janice is one of the co-founders of a biotech company so it would make sense for him to go into medicine.

There are people like Nathan who are so successful in the things they're doing, and trying to make themselves useful to the world...and then there are people like me, completely ordinary and useless... 😆

I think it will be difficult for Nathan, Mentally, to continue if he doesn't win the OGM. He's climbed the mountain twice, and he's been at this his entire life. With his degree in hand, I think he might choose to move on with his life. As a Yale Graduate, lots of doors will be open for him.

Social media is a minefield, but I would just like to speak to this one sentence. I saw the original interview and I saw Nathan's apology. I believe Nathan apologized because he realized he misspoke and hurt some people with the way he misspoke. So if you are using the term "had to" in that Nathan realized he had hurt people and had to apologize, you are right. If you are using the term to say Nathan was somehow forced to apologize by social media reaction but didn't really mean it, that is not the case. I don't want to revisit the particulars, but I will say Nathan's genuine and heartfelt apology made me respect him even more.

And there is no such thing as a typical college experience. ;) I remember an interview with Nathan (perhaps his more dedicated fans can link) where he said, well, yeah, I may be doing well in figure skating, but someone else in my college just won an Oscar. (College is Yale speak for dorm, very simplified). So that's "typical" for Nathan.

Particularly if Nathan reaches his Olympic goals, I just can't see him returning to full time competitive skating. Will he say definitively I'm hanging up my skates? I doubt it. But he has seen life after competitive skating, and he appears to be ready for it. Frankly, that approach impresses the heck out of me. :)
Me thinks you are a Nathan fan lol which is fine. He is brilliant skater technically and brilliant off the ice. HE said some things that hurt some and that honestly probably reflected what he thinks and what others think. As the top hope in US skating - men's women's dance and pairs he will make some coin. He is bright and will way his options but skating is not like it used to be in respect to shows and pro ams. I am sure he will make a wise decision that considers what he want sin life - and he has such intelligence and hard work ethics he could be a doctor like Tenley Albright or Debi Thomas. or Joannie Rochette. Or he could parlay his work ethic and talent into something else. The world is his oyster. I don't think skating will define this fine athlete and person

Skating is no longer the gold mine it once was. But Nathan will have lots of options. I am curious is there any way the US skating fed would leave Jason off the team? Even if you save a spot for Vinnie - the rest don't look ready this year so maybe Brown will be assured of an Oly spot and team medal?

I said I had no occasion to revisit the interview, but I will say this: why on earth would anyone second guess Nathan's own words in his apology about what he should have said, and what he honestly believes. I will take him at his word, and not defend that which he saw fit not to defend.

I do not think, although I have no way of knowing, that money is Nathan's primary influence for schooling. Particularly as I believe he comes from a family of academics (now academia I do know about ;) )

Whether Jason will make the Olympic team remains to be seen. I know what I would like, but I am not USFS. :)

I had some slight doubts. And I still think things need to play out... but my doubts are far less than they were before this past week.

Hope is still alive for "Not Big 3" US men, but it's dwindling, especially if they don't get their acts together quickly.

If they’re going by BOW: 1. Vincent has gold at Cranberry, Gold at Nebelhorn, Gold at Skate America, Silver at NHK. 2. Jason has Gold at Finlandia, Silver at Skate Canada 3. Nathan Chen, current World Champion, Bronze at Skate America, Gold at Skate Canada. Both Vincent and Nathan going to GPF. Barring injury (Goddess forbid), I can’t see a scenario where there is room for another man to break in here.
