2021-22 Retirements, Splits & Partner Changes

Not official, but on TSL today, Dave mentioned off-the-cuff that Danny O'Shea had a tryout with Olivia Serafini recently (U.S. Pairs), which would mean that Chelsea Liu apparently has decided not to return. That's sad, but she has to think about her health and fully recovering from the concussion she unfortunately suffered. Serafini had split with Mervin Tran early last year.

As we await any official statement, I want to wish Chelsea all the best in her recovery, and in pursuing other life goals. My best to Danny as well. I really hope he is able to return and have success with another partner.

ETA:
So that means there are two promising U.S. pairs partnerships that are no more. Plus, we don't know what K/F and Ash/ Timothy's plans will be moving forward. I hope both K/F and Ash/Timothy will decide to return, but there are other life considerations that matter. Dave Lease is wrong though, to suggest the U.S. won't have pairs teams to send to Worlds and to international events: Calalang/Johnson are surely continuing. Chan/Howe will be able to step right up. Hopefully, Danny will find a good match (there's no word yet on the results of his tryout with Serafini). Misha Mitrofanov is already paired with a new partner. And there are other promising U.S. pairs teams in seniors and in juniors who will surely be excited and motivated about K/F's World championship win.
Oh no. I loved Danny and Chelsea. But I adore Danny no matter who he’s with. I’d suggest Kate Finister but she doesn’t seem to be able to stay with one partner for more than a year.

I’ve said this in other threads, but K/F are the most decorated US pair since the 1950s. They could be the pair that sets off a big interest in pairs skating in the US, similar to how Tanith and Ben set off an interest in since Dance. If I were USFS, I’d be offering them anything I had to keep skating.

That's not true, and it's not Kate's fault that she's been trying to find a suitable partner. She had a good career with Balazs Nagy in Juniors. Balazs and Kate did not continue together due to physical incompatibility which happens when young people are still growing. Kate needed a taller partner, and it worked for this past season with Matej Silecky. For whatever reason (perhaps needing a younger partner), Kate split with Matej, and it seems amicable. Good luck to both Matej and Kate! ❤️

Well if she wants a younger partner Danny certainly wouldn’t fit the bill. I remember waiting what seemed like forever for him and Chelsea to partner up.

well... this is the world of pairs skating... what may be happening in the USA just happened in Canada a couple years ago... and China doesn't seem to have a new generation building up (at least that I know of, one good junior team if I recall correctly?) Italy, Germany, Austria... etc Russia is okay... they had their own issues a few years ago... but that's about it. Gosh... it will be interesting to say the least, to see how the pairs discipline evolves in the next quad.

Yeah, I don't think Kate & Danny are thinking about joining up. They train in the same camp, and both are looking elsewhere. In fact, I thought @skylark had posted a comment and a link to Matej's announcement of the split, which seemed to indicate Kate may have found another partner already?

Actually @moonvine, I did some historical fact-checking. K/F are right up there, but they aren't the most decorated U.S. pair, truthfully (which despite their World championship win, it would be hard for them to have amassed a huge amount of medals together over only two years). K/F are among three U.S. pairs partners who won pairs gold at Worlds, but their expected Olympic silver medal is a team medal. The first U.S. and North American pair to win Worlds in 1950* (Karol & Peter Kennedy), also won individual Olympic silver, in 1952. *In addition, the Kennedys won four World silver medals, the first in 1947! Plus, just in terms of hardware (and it's important to remember that earlier eras did not have as many competitions), much respect should be given to Tai & Randy who earned two World bronze medals, before winning gold at Worlds in 1979. T&R (brought together by coach, Mabel Fairbanks, and later coached by the legendary John Nicks) are five-time U.S. champions, and they also won two U.S. silver medals in pairs, along with placing 5th at the Olympics in 1976, among other achievements.

Another John Nicks team, Jenni Meno and Todd Sand, won numerous medals together and with other partners (especially Todd, who won U.S. and World medals with Natasha Kuchiki). As well, Chris & Alex Knierim won a ton of figure skating medals during their career together, and Brandon, with his former partner, Haven Denney, were no slouches either, having won Junior Worlds; U.S. junior and senior medals, including a national championship and two senior national silver medals; also GP medals, and a senior B medal.

Interestingly, while digging into the stats research, I discovered that Todd Sand's father was Danish, which allowed Todd to begin his career representing Denmark, in singles! Todd competed at the European championships in 1982 and 1983. He was also Denmark's men's champion in 1982 and 1983, before he returned to the U.S., switched to pairs, and won a bronze medal in junior pairs at the U.S. national championships (1984), with Lori Blasko. Todd & Lori also won an international championship in Prague. Todd then paired with Natasha Kuchiki, and after the 1992 Olympics, he & Jenni told their mutual coach, John Nicks, that they wanted to skate together. They were also up front about breaking the news to their respective partners, which must have been difficult. I still remember when that happened way back when! Another tidbit that I personally remember: Todd & Jenni appeared on a cover of Dance Magazine in either 1995 or 1996 -- they were celebrated as 'dance artists on ice!'

Learning some of the things I didn't know about Todd/Jenni's career reveals to me just how modest they are. It could very well be that Todd & Jenni are the most decorated pairs team in U.S. history, in addition to being successful coaches, carrying on the legacy that former British champion, John Nicks, helped carve out for U.S. pairs. LOL! Todd and Jenni do not toot their own horns, unlike Bruno Marcotte, who rattled on about having trained a World championship team (during that awkward moment at the sp small medal ceremony and press conference in Montpelier).

There are other U.S. teams who placed high at the Olympics, and who won numerous Worlds, U.S., and international medals (including JoJo Starbuck & Ken Shelley, who were great mentors to Tai & Randy). I'll place an additional post about this in the U.S. pairs thread, with more details. It pays to do research, which I enjoy doing. :)

Sofia Shevchenko and Igor Eremenko split. According to Svinin Sofia decided to focus on studying. Her return is not excluded but she doesn't train for now. The team is looking for a new partner for Igor.

I liked this couple so much :cry::cry:

Such a shame as I really liked them together. Sofia was always such a delight to watch. Although, I am now hoping for a Shanaeva/Eremenko partnership!

Aww, sad to read this. I liked this pair and thought they had a bright future. I am glad I got to see them live in their last season together. Good luck to Jessica and Brian in their future endeavors! It seems like at least Jessica plans to continue?
