2021-22 Russian Local Events

I did see Sofia's Free, but I didn't quite know what to say, that's why I didn't comment earlier.

I like Sofia a lot, but I wish she wasn't so set on following Sasha's example. Sofia has wonderful artistry and skating skills, which makes it even more frustrating that her Free feels kind of empty and disconnected - Apart from the "armography" (and I say that as someone who actually enjoys "armography"), there isn't a lot in this program choreographically to allow her skating skills and interpretative ability to shine. Obviously, this is to conserve her energy for her quad attempts - But haven't we learned from Anna winning over Sasha at the Olympics? 5 Quads alone are not enough to guarantee you a win over someone with less difficult content (and yes, Sofia has a 3A, so that would give her a leg up currently, but just look at the future generation - basically everyone notable skater turning senior in the next 2-3 generations currently already has a 3A).

Sadly, she also struggles with consistently fully rotating all her quads (the technical controllers were a bit lenient with her here) and I get a heart attack every time someone falls from jumps with rippons (for some reason, I find them much scarier than similar falls from jumps without rippons) - Bad combo for my heart.

Despite that, congratulations to Sofia for landing her first 4Lo in "competition" (or maybe more accurately "in a semi-competitive situation"?).

I am a bit confused in what I watched and what I didn’t with so many competitions, but I want to catch up on Grinkov’s. Worth seeing Ivanova skate to Walking on Water/Goodbye America. That’s a wonderful mix. Probably one of my fav unknown programs this season.

There is a post on telegram of her working with a skating skills coach-(I've forgotten the name, it is the coaches insta/telegram account), and she is capable-I think she will get there-but they need to fix her head drop, and some tech errors that are distracting. This program was a bit of a mess, but I think it was just a dress rehearsal for the Channel 1 cup, to see if she could do the quads in the second half. (Answer seems to be: No, not yet)

I'm sure that Sasha would prefer being the Olympic champion over being the Olympic silver medalist, who should have won in the eyes of her fans.

This wasn't my preferred outcome at the Olympics either, but I will not try and deny that the judges have sent a very clear message - They will not reward taking excessive risks over what they perceive to be a balanced approach between risk and quality.

Sofia and her coaches have to ask themselves if it is worth it to take as many risks as they do if it won't be rewarded. And Sasha's case shows that even records won't be enough to heal the wounds of a lost Olympic gold, the wounds of always being "only" 2nd or 3rd best, just out of reach of that elusive 1st place, no matter what you do.

Sofia will be up against many quadsters and trixelists, her margin of error will be much smaller than Sasha's, who only had to compete with one other quad jumper and a few skaters with a triple axel for most of her career. (Both Veronika Zhilina and Sofia Akatieva will be senior-eligible nationally next season, so she'll be up against everyone who she is currently up against + the seniors (unless they retire)) She will also not have the heavy political backing Sasha received by being coached by Eteri Tutberidze (before joining AoP). This is already clear in the scores Sofia receives, and the number of technical calls.

I guess it comes down to this: Will Sofia be happy potentially never winning a gold medal in her pursuit of technical difficulty? Sasha thought she was happy with striving for records outside of medals, but she also thought she would win if she showed her technical superiority - Sofia won't have that belief to comfort her, so will she be able to mentally handle that?

And in senior men there is Butsaeva's student Ruslan Nazarov (see, I know my Moskvich boys, even when they disguise themselves as skating for Sochi).
This will be an intense weekend with the Southern Breeze, Moskvich Cup, Channel One Cup, and Worlds. And we will also celebrate my mother in law's 60th birthday on Saturday, so I'll miss men's FS at Worlds and/or SPs at Channel One Cup. My struggle is real. Luckily my parents in law are connoisseurs of fine wine, so I'll at least be able to drown my sorrow.

But hey, it defo makes it into the history books (hey, we were World Champions - when the best in the game weren't there. ). I'll watch for mere entertainment - apart from ID where I'm still invested.

I've made my peace with Worlds, there are still a lot of skaters I'm cheering for and we have the Cup as an alternative event with the Russians.
But I'll forever be lamenting Junior Worlds without ice cream Ilya and whoever else RusFed would have chosen. I guess I'll just watch Nika Egadze and boycott the rest of the event.
Hopefully RusFed organizes something where the Juniors can compete as well (and not just the girls).

Tbh, I am watching the only available day 3 of Spartakiad and pairs seems more fun than the Worlds, but I am invested into Schizas. There were some good women’s skates. I am actually more interested in JWC than in WC sans Russians, even though I feel like I will never get over the loss of Ilya vs Ilya, Apple and Raspberries.

Thanks for keeping everything up to date! I have such a busy day at work today, I keep wanting to open youtube to the Moskvich Cup and every time I try a new work emergency comes up. But now I had five minutes to breathe and noticed that they added an impromptu junior category. I was hoping for seniors as well, but I'll also be happy just looking at the Moskvich baby skaters.
