2021 Open d'Andorra

Better performance today from Natalia Pallu-Neves & Jayin Panesar in their West Side Story Free Dance. Moved up a couple of places in the FD and one place Overall. But all of our Junior Dancers need to work on the basics, as the competition is so tough. But always good to see a South Asian heritage boy competing at this level. I attended the long defunct British Intermediate Championships at Lee Valley around 1985 and there was a South Asian brother/sister icedance partnership. But in the decades since, I can't remember any others till Jayin. BTW I'm using the term South Asian heritage, because in the UK we call the Indian/Pakistani/BanglaDeshi/SriLankan community Asian. But I know in the US they refer to skaters from Vietnam/Chinese/Japanese heritage as Asian.

What?! They're doing it again! Putting a resurfacing in the middle of a segment that has only 8 skaters taking part! :drama:

Right, I'm off back to the Junior Dancers to watch my kids!

Thank you for saying this. Because there have been a few times when I have had American members getting very angry with me over something I have said, and it is all due to certain terms getting used in different ways on either side of the Atlantic.

Like you, whenever I hear the term "Asian", I automatically think of somebody who is from the Indian Subcontinent, or whose heritage lies in those countries. So, I always get thoroughly confused when the Americans on here use the term "Asian" to mean Chinese, Japanese or Korean people.

But, now that you have put the "South Asian" term in my head, I will try to use it on here. Even though it is not a term we would ever use or hear in real life.

Anyway, getting back to your point, I've never thought of it, but you're right. There has been a lack of South Asian skaters coming through the British ranks. And that is surprising, given that we have large South Asian communities in the UK.

So, well done to Jayin for coming through. Hopefully if he goes on to do well in the years to come, then it will inspire other kids with similar backgrounds to take up the sport.

We badly need as many kids as possible to take up the sport.

The more, the merrier!

I've just noticed the schedule has changed for the Senior Free Dance. It now starts at 17.40 local time (4.40pm UK) if you're going off and returning to watch. Tea may be interrupted! :coffee::)

New stream for the remaining competitions. And this is the problem with not having resurfacings positioned between segments. Because the old stream cut off just as the first group of the girls were getting called for their Warm-Up, and the new stream didn't come on air until a few minutes later. So, we missed a chunk of the Warm-Up.

Livestream for the Senior Ladies FS is now on air.

Here is the link for the livestream:

Here is the Time Schedule:

And here is the live scoring:

Hope this helps

:cheer: ALL THE BEST!!! :cheer:

Thank you.

But, the rest of the event hasn't run to schedule, so I don't expect the last competition to!

I don't know what has been going on this week. Were the organisers underestimating the amount of time that should be allocated to each skater when making out the schedule? Because there were occasions when we had groups with one or two withdrawals, and yet still ended up being behind schedule by the time the following group finished. And the scoring didn't seem to be taking longer than normal.

Although I've been linking to the Time Schedule PDF's, I've just been taking what they say with a pinch of salt. They have just been more of a rough guide this week.

JOAN JETT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BLONDIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I may have been complaining about the French Ice Dancers having weird programmes, but their Singles skaters are on it!

Not sure I would have included Ed Sheeran's cover of "Make It Rain" in the middle, though. Wait, I am sure. I wouldn't!

On the whole, loved the music. But, Sophia MAAROUF had a few too many mistakes in the skating.

I think she's going to drop to the bottom. 😞

EDIT: Sorry, I forgot that Romana's FS was an even bigger disaster zone. Sophia stays ahead, by the small margin of 18 points.

Yay!!! The Chilean girl stays in the lead!!! :cheer:  :points:

Not a perfect skate. But, she only had one fall, whereas the other skaters had two.

Yae-Mia didn't have any reaction when the scores were announced. Although, to be fair, the Zamboni was already out on the ice. So, she mightn't have actually heard them. :p

Always glad to see small Fed skaters doing well.

Hope to see more of her in the years to come

:cheer: WELL DONE!!! :cheer:

By the way, I just discovered why we hadn't come across the Chilean girl before, even though she is 22.

Yae-Mia NEIRA is actually Swiss skater Yae-Mia SCHÄRER competing under a different name and different flag.

Her Dad is Chilean, and her Mum is Swiss.

I don't know if this is a name change due to marriage, or whether she had been using her Mum's surname when she was competing for Switzerland and has now switched to using her Dad's surname now that she is competing for Chile.

Whatever the story, I'm glad that we are getting to see her more regularly now.

Frida skated a clean FS! OMG SHE GOT THE FS MINIMUM FOR EC!!! By 6 points! :hap10:

Does she have the SP minimum for Euros? I know you commented this morning that Linnea got the SP minimum for both Euros and Worlds yesterday.

It would be nice to see Norway at both of the Majors.

Yes, both Linnea and Frida got the SP minimum in Cup of Austria, so if Linnea gets the FS minimum now as well they will have to battle between EC-spot!

Although it wasn't by any means perfectly executed, I enjoyed the theme of that programme from Elzbieta GABRYSZAK (POL).

We need more French music that isn't one of the usual suspects by Lara Fabian.

Goes into 4th in the FS, and 2nd overall.

Oh, wouldn't be nice if Linnea got the FS minimum for Worlds, and the Fed decided to let the girls have a Major each. ;)

That was a beautiful FS from Linnea. And she was using my favourite female version of "Hallelujah", by Alexandra Burke.

Fingers crossed.

Mmmm. Frida is still leading the FS by roughly 3.5 points. But Linnea's advantage from the SP means she is leading overall.
