2022-23 Grand Prix assignments

3 host picks per discipline. If they don't use them, these spots are filled through the "normal" selection procedure: after having guaranteed 2 spots for those who earned them at Worlds and one spot for those in World Standing top 24 and previous Season Best top 24, they pick from previous Season Best top 75 list. To be considered there is a minimum score to have been achieved in previous season: it is equal to 3/5 of highest score per discipline at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships of previous year.

I believe the host picks can be used for ANY skaters, not just for those from the host country. So any host could have picked Josefin. I don't know if all the hosts have used all their "host picks". If they haven't, does anyone know if they can they use them (ie bypass normal selection criteria) if someone withdraws and a substitute is required.

Does anyone know if the minimum score applies to the host picks?

I quess in women most of hosts have enough to choose from "own" skaters, but small federations don't always have enough men, pairs and dancers. This a quess but maybe Majorov and Levandi are host picks for EspooA Pirinen/Okihara may also be host pick for Japan because of possbility to Yuka skate in her home country.

If I understand right, this rule is also for host picks, this is season 2021/2022 rules, but there were not mentioned this season or does this mean just scores from last season? I think this was already here or on some other thread, but I don't remember if host picks were mentioned.

Mariah would only not have GP assignments if she had withdrawn her name. So although she implied she was coming back, she is not, at least for the GP. Jason dodged every question about continuing, but clearly withdrew his name as well.

Why she did that, will need to be the subject of another interview.

I have tickets to both Skate America and Skate Canada.

In general, I am happy with the selection of skaters. I love that Roman Sadovsky will be at Skate America. Lately, it has been consistently Keegan. Can't wait to see what those beautiful spins look like in person.

I gather Max Naumov must still be injured as Norwood is his rink. Such a shame.

I am bummed Kazuki won't be at either, but maybe next year.

Great that the season is starting. Where is the list for the Juniors? I started watching them last year and would like to continue.

From my reading of the "from the organizing ISU member" bit, they should come from the host country.
Minimum score is not applied to them.

From last year's announcement (they didn't publish the one for this year but it is usually the same every year):

1. A maximum of three Skaters/Couples in each discipline from the Organizing ISU Member may skate in the Organizing ISU Member’s event. This includes Skaters/Couples selected according to paragraph 2.1 and 2.2 above. If the Organizing ISU Member chooses not to exercise its option for the three Skaters/Couples in any discipline from its own country, the remaining entry spots must be filled as per paragraphs 2.2 a) to e) above. ..... It is not mandatory for the Organizing ISU Member’s Skaters/Couple to fulfil the criteria of the minimum Grand Prix score but it is strongly suggested.

I don't think full junior lists have been published yet. I know Japan and South Korea have announced their skaters for JGP, but JGP fields are really extensive so they still show as TBA.

There never has been and never will be a list for the JGP series in the same way as there is for the senior GP series.

In contrast to the GP series, entries are almost completely up to the individual federations and only the number of entries and events with entries per federation is decided on by the ISU (based on the results of the last Junior World Championships).
Each JGP stage has its own entry deadline (about a month before the start of the competition), entries and substitutes have to be named by then. Generally, entries are then officially announced 2-3 days after the end of the deadline (so for the first JGP stage in Courchevel entries will likely come out tomorrow or on Tuesday).
Some countries announce their entries/part of their entries way before the end of the deadlines, but they don't have to, they can (and some do) wait until the official entries come out on the respective event pages.

It´s really a shame about Josefin though, she was just really unlucky because she is not really in the selection criteria because of her ISU SB isn´t top 75, but top 78 instead, only separated by 2 points! She is listed as nr. 37 at season world ranking, which is a really good achievement and on that list she is ahead of multiple skaters who got a GP spot because they instead are on top 75 on season best scores. I thought with the Russian ban they might take them off the SB list, in that case Josefin would have been top 56 and most likely gotten a spot with her other results. Or maybe not? So I was a bit surprised. It doesn´t make much sense to me, but hey - rules are rules. I think Josefin still can get a host spot if someone WD or something. And if the Russian ban continues through the season, she will probably easily get a spot next season.

Excited to see so many junior skaters debut as seniors in GP, this will be an exciting season!

I must say I am very glad that the American women and men withdrew their names before the assignment procedures. It is very irritating with skaters that never intended to compete, and then wd just a week or two before the event. This happens every year, and sometimes it is too late to replace them. (Radionova and Tursynbaeva springs to mind.)
This way, all skaters can plan their competition calendar better.

Josefin really shouldn't have put in both the Lutz and Flip in the short at the Olympics. She didn't q for the long and the chances for a good score was gone. If only...
They never eliminate skaters from the SB list, even if they are retired or not age eligible. With so many gone this year, Josefin really had the chance if only she had been 75, not 78.
Yes, lots of new seniors this year. But because of the new age rules, we might not see new seniors until next Olympic season.

Thank you for the information. I did know that all skaters from the host country as considered host picks, even if they would have qualified for assignment under the "regular" criteria.

Usually GP hosts are major skating nations, so can fill all or most of their host spots. But it seems a shame that when GPs are hosted by smaller countries, they can't use their host picks for other smaller countries, who never get a chance to send their "lesser" skaters to GP events. For example, Finland might choose skaters like Josefin from nearby countries, and Great Britain might choose skaters from Commonwealth countries like Australia.

Josefin was only 78th on the SB list, so I'm not even sure she was in the selection pool. It's supposed to be top 75 SB (except for host picks). But regardless, being that far down it would have been surprising if she got a spot. She's also far down for a replacement spot. And I wouldn't expect her to get a TBD - those are usually for skaters from the host country. The SA and NHK ones will definitely go to an American and Japanese women, respectively. And the French one will probably be Mae Berenice Meite if she's ready to come back.

Thanks, I understand. Josefin got 178.10 at worlds 2021, which doesn't count. It’s a pity she couldn’t repeat that during the 21/22 season.

She sure does. I hope the impressive achievements of Kimmy Repond last season bring a healthy rivalry among the top Swiss women, and will fire up both of them.

There have always been some withdraws because of injuries or diseases. I don't hope it to anybody to happen, but it is sport and it happens. So all the lists are not really final cast iron yet.
