2022 Worlds Pre-Game Chat

So what will be the quota for Russia or China for 2023 Worlds if they don't have any skaters competing at this year's worlds? Will it go back yo 1 for each discipline (with TES minimum for Worlds)?
Russia and China are not in the same situation, though. China chose not to compete. The Russians were banned. One should be business as usual and the other is an extenuating circumstance. I hope that Russia keeps their quotas, but China’s actually not affected much anyway. They already had only one spot in all disciplines except in pairs and there’s not another competitive pair in the wings save for Peng/Jin and Sui/Han must be retiring this season.

it wouldn't be the same thing without your gifs

If Jason skips it we get Camden. At that point I'd be concerned for our 3 spots.
I used to really love Camden but, I just don't trust him like I used to. Unlike Vincent, Camden has been healthy and he can be great, or fall to pieces. I'll have to check this but, was Jimmy in the top 6 at Nationals. I love his passion and this would be the highlight of his career. When we will know the final lineup? Worlds are only Two Weeks Away....

The way things are going, who even knows if Russia will be allowed to participate in 2023?

It was the IOC/ISU that decided on the ban, so I don't know why they would want to cut Russia any slack.

1: stranger things have happened, is Nathan Chen going? if yes then not a chance

I don't know Elektra, I'm not so sure.

A fully trained and on-point Nathan? I agree, probably unbeatable.

But I'm not so sure that he is completely ready. Since winning the Olympics, he's been on a publicity gauntlet, and don't get me wrong - I don't blame him for that at all. Make hay while the sun shines.

But I haven't heard much about his training during this time. And, as great as Nathan is, he's not invincible, especially if he's not completely on his game. Vincent proved that early in the season when Nathan hadn't done any summer comps and wasn't in peak condition. If Shoma and/or Kagiyama have continued to hone their programs, Nathan could be beaten.

I REALLY don't think Nathan is going to Worlds. However, I'd certainly like to know when the final decision will be made as to which skaters will be attending. I imagine Camden and Jimmy are in the rink training just in case they get a call.

I do think he’s going, but it will be only to hold down three spots. Brown’s first alternate, but who knows what his story is? If it comes down to a Zhou-Pulkinen-Malinin team, then American men are in a bit of trouble. Despite his continuing issues in the free skate, Zhou nailed his short every time. His free skate is such that (with a clean short) he’ll score decently even if he skates like he did in NHK. But can he handle anchoring the American team?

In the scenario in which Zhou bombs the free, Malinin would be the second man and would probably need to place higher than Zhou to keep the three spots. I think he’s solid and he doesn’t strike me as a nervy skater, but that’s not the point. The point is that he shouldn’t even be put in that position in the first place. The veterans need to handle the spots, not the junior.

If Chen skates, it will probably be because Brown cannot.

Things move so fast around here. Is there a question about whether or not Jason will be going to Worlds? He skated so well at the Olympics, I don't think they'd give his spot Ilia. Without Nathan, Illia is the clear choice as the US Silver Medalist.

Jason is back at TCC and skating:

The only unclear issue would be if Jason is retiring. As a Jason fan, I don't like David Wilson's comments (it's been an honor and a privilege blah de blah, that's good bye talk😭), but that wouldn't stop Jason from skating at this year's Worlds.

I know that Nathan has implied he is going to Worlds in interviews and Instagram, but as far as I know, no "here I am training hard" posts. And you know, if I were Nathan, I would taking my victory laps, I would be making that coin, I would be looking forward to return to Yale that I clearly loved, and I would ditch Worlds.

But I am not Nathan. :)

I agree 100%. He's at the TOP of the Mountain and he needs to enjoy it for as long as he can. He's been on so many shows and he should continue to enjoy the accolades of being the OGM for as long as he can before returning to school.

It should be, otherwise, it’s an inconsistent response. Chances are, though, that the ban will continue for Russia and Belorussia for the next season, so the question is moot.

You know @el henry I'm like you - I don't know what either of them are doing.

But they've proven themselves loyal members of Team USA. If Nathan does opt out, I predict Jason will go to save the spots. If Jason is in a position he CAN'T go, then Nathan will not drop out.

That sounds convoluted, but I can't imagine there will be a US contingent that has neither Nathan nor Jason. I just get the feelinig they want to leave the team in good shape for next year (assuming both are stepping away for at least a while).

Heh, apparently you’ve been living under a rock for the past two months. Brown was never on the Worlds team. He is first alternate. The Worlds team was named right after Nationals: Chen, Zhou, Malinin. I mentioned Brown’s status because if Chen doesn’t want to go, then Brown would be called up as first alternate. But if Brown also declines to go, then it’s down to the second and third alternates and this is something USFed should want to avoid. What I meant at the end of my previous post (Will not skate instead of cannot is better wording, I think) is that if Chen chooses to skate, I think it will be because Brown declined and he wants to make sure US keeps three spots. I don’t understand why he would be at Worlds otherwise.

:drama: :drama: :drama: You know, I used to be so up on everything. Thank you for this post

This is not Grand Prix so world standing has nothing to do with entering the competition. Each country can send one pair, as long as the pair has the minimum TES. Some countries can send two or three pairs, what depends on the places a pair (or pairs) of this country won at the previous Worlds. It's a bit complicated system of recalculation the places into spots.
When the entries list is announced, the number of spots cannot be increased. If a pair WD, they can be replaced by another pair of the same country (with TES minimum for Worlds), as long as they are on the list as substitute. This is the only change to be done.
Thank you very much for taking the time to explain!

Karen skated clean during Olympics team event (free program). However, she still lost to Madeline at team event. That is a bag sign among international judges. Nothing against to Karen, I'm just pointing to the fact. I'm not Mariah fans either. However, I do think Mariah has better chance than Karen this time. Don't forget that Leona still earned big pcs score even she fell/popped the jumps at Olympics. Leona was placed head of Alysa during short program because of her PCS advantage.
Karen was skating injured.

But maybe Nathan just wishes to be World Champion for the fourth time.....
