Delurking because I'm trying to figure out Skate Canada's logic in all of this for singles and I have spent way too much time thinking about this.

From the 2023-24 International Selection Guidelines, for Challengers:
  • All skaters need to complete a fullsummer competition (no withdrawing after the short), unless a competitive plan has been agreed upon with the High Performance Director
    • Since Deanna/Max and Marjorie/Zach were assigned to ACI, I guess they have that competitive plan
    • Stephen and Roman were the ones who withdrew after the short for their summer competitions last season, so unlikely they'd get an exemption
  • Preference will be given to skaters assigned to a Grand Prix
  • Requirements may be waived due to extenuating circumstances
  • Score requirements
    • Men: 199 Int/213 Domestic
    • Women: 155 Int/166 Domestic
So for the singles who are on the Grand Prix and did their full summer competition:

Men: Conrad, Wesley (ACI)
Women: Kaiya (ACI), Sara-Maude

That leaves Maddie, Stephen and Roman who haven't done their full competition yet, and I don't think Maddie is the one they'd be worried about. Maddie and Stephen have Skate Ontario this week, no idea what Roman's doing. I hope his withdrawal from Cranberry Cup was something like his boots broke and nothing more serious than that.

I'm guessing that Nebelhorn will be Conrad and Maddie. Canada won the Fritz-Geiger Memorial Trophy there last season due to being the best performing country, so I think they'll want to send stronger skaters there to repeat that. That's the one I'm most interested in seeing for Canada's entries.

For the non-GP skaters, it looks like one of the later Challengers like Warsaw is where Skate Canada prefers to send them. I think they'll send skaters who meet the requirements like Fiona, Matthew Newnham, Aleksa Rakic and Justine Miclette to that one. The only skater I can think of who got an early Challenger but wasn't on the GP was Lia since she was sent to Finlandia as a senior while competing on the JGP.

That doesn't explain why they couldn't have sent more singles to ACI. Aleksa will be on his fourth summer competition this week, I was hoping that he'd get ACI so that he could go relax on a beach somewhere, he's earned a Challenger at this point. If he had to cover his costs for Glacier Falls and Cranberry Cup, that's got to add up.

Justine had a good free skate at CQE, they need to capitalize on it since she only needs her free skate TES for Worlds. Going into this season, Maddie is the only woman who has the full TES since Gabby didn't meet the free TES last season. They need to be sending out everyone who could possibly get them rather than hoping that nothing happens to Maddie.

It also doesn't explain why most skaters get one Challenger and that's it. If they don't have a GP assignment, they're not going to improve their season's best and not improve their chances of getting a non-host GP assignment. They get up to three Challengers per skater, they have ACI this year. Whatever strategy worked in the past isn't working for singles.

Welcome to Golden Skate saine! As we say on the board, post long and post often! :)

Thank you :) For Caidence and Raine, they're not one of the teams that has a bye to Nationals, they'll have to do the domestic competitions. The Ontario August competition scores count towards qualifying for Ontario sectionals, but they're not competing for Ontario. Not sure what the Saskatchewan procedure since I can't find it, but they do have to meet the Challenge Minimum Score before Skate Canada Challenge, so this will count towards it.

In their case, and Proft/Nadeau too (announced before they competed last weekend), their plan means having to do the domestic competitions to get to Challenge/Nationals. So Skate Canada was probably not worried about those teams only competing the short. But then that brings in Brooke and Ben who withdrew fully and have a bye to Nationals, so they have a plan too? The requirement isn't helping if too many people get to have plans.
Lia and Trennt did their Short today but have WD from the Long…at Ontario Sectionals.

hi Heather T! Welcome to the forum ! This is sad news. I was looking forward to seeing them skate their LP.
As you have noticed, we encourage new members to post often :) and I would add, especially when it comes to this thread, as it lives thanks only to a few dedicated and loving contributors.

Uliana attempted a 3A tonight... downgraded but it had been a while since any Canadian woman had tried it.

Men's and Women's events at National are really going to be interesting this year. No one is establishing themselves as fore runners. So far they all seem to be scoring in the same range. Of course we have not seen Maddie yet. But if Maddie skates like last year she won't put two good programs back to back. I don't think it will as easy for her to win Nationals this year unless she skates two good programs. And in men of course we have not seen Roman - but then again it is hard to expect much from him until you actually see it.

Yes Heather T, as 4everchan referenced, the saying here is post long and post often. Welcome to Golden Skate!

Thanks for the welcome! I discovered this forum earlier this week when I watched a bit of the pairs practice at Skate Oakville and I noticed Gabriel Farand skating with a different partner. And I wondered who it was and my Google search brought me here. I hesitated to ask if anyone knew the answer bc I don’t want to seem gossipy…

Love that she is going for that 3A. It wasn’t close. But, for her to attempt it, means she must have landed it in practice. I wonder if Uliana will be given a Challenger Senior event, after this result? 🤔

Now that Justine has an event due to her excellent result at the Quebec event, I wonder if Daleman has a chance, if Daleman exceeds 166 score at her event this weekend 😃

I'm hoping they'll end up choosing to assign three singles skaters each - Add Aleksa and one of Conrad, Stephen or Roman; and add Maddie (Gabbie doesn't have a GP assignment, so she can be sent out later, and Uliana's JGP is only a week before ACI).

But, she just needs a 105+ free skate to do it.

Also, Lulu killed it in the Juniors SP.

In Juniors, it looks like we have:

BC/AB - Uliana, Kara
ONT - Lulu, Hetty
QUE - Rose, Aleksa

In Seniors, it looks like we have:

BC/AB - Uliana, Kaiya
ONT - Maddie, Fiona (Pending: Gabrielle Daleman… waiting to see how she does after the free skate)
QUE - Justine, Sara-Maude

Almost two athletes in each Section pushing each other.

Rose is skating senior at SGÉ... so she will also be pushing the Quebec senior crew.

Really? I didn’t know this. I always thought she was too young. If that is the case, then, that is good news! They need to push one another and we just need one to rise to the cream of the crop like we did with Kaetlyn 🙏🏽

She is 16.
