PS I'd be curious, if anyone is game, to see
1) who that judge is
2) what was their behaviour across the board
3) if other skaters were lowballed terribly by the same judge or other judges...

I have a feeling that David Howes deserved better.
The judge 3 was Derby. Her marks for other junior women were the same as other judges, maybe slightly lower, but higher for Hetty S. So, obviously wanted Hetty on the podium ahead of Shiryaeva. In short, she favored Rose T. Andrea Derby is currently on the Skate Ontario Board of Directors. Make what you want of this info. In the end, the better Shiryaeva sells the program, the less they could dock her.

Howes wasn't underscored in PCS. His PCS was only second to Paradis in SP, and in Free his components were the highest

Re Next Gen : happy to see Edward Vasii on the roster : he's been MIA (didn't go to the next gen competition nor is signed up for CQE)

Martel/Oddson are my home team, literally from my neighborhood skating club, so I hope I can cheer them on in JGP soon. With 3rd place they should qualify. And Nguyen/Giang are from BC, so I can designate them as mom's team.

Well i was going to say that Fournier/Zhu were my home team... (not like i have a club LOL) but ermm they didn't make it to next gen... that must be upsetting for Everest who was there before.

here is a link to the Next Gen team. Don't know if it has already been posted.

I like the fact that it gives ages; they didn't display them at the simulated competition.

Shoehei Law missed the team, so I will have to claim David Bondar as my local skater. He is from my former home, Richmond Hill, Ontario, the home of Elvis Stojko. Richmond Hill is also the home of TWO training centers.

i had posted the next gen page but the announcement indeed lists the ages which is great.
interesting to note that indeed, shohei had a bad event and didn't qualify while Kara and Aleksa got the nod in the women with bad events... not sure what made the case for them.
For your home skater, you have a lot of options considering the so many skaters training in BC or coming from BC :
Howes, Jin, Chan or Li :)

Probably their age; both are 14.

Angelina Guan finished 6th in competition but missed the team, which is puzzled me especially with Kara and Aleksa made it. Would that really be because of the age? Or Skate Canada sees something else beyond the results?

She has no triple triple 😭

Age is definitely one of the factors considered. It's explicit in the NextGen Team Selection Guidelines put out by SC. There are two targeted scores for each discipline for the NextGen team – one for skaters/teams with two or fewer years of junior eligibility left, and another for those with three+ years left. Shohei is 18, so he's in a different situation to Kara and Aleksa. I don't know Angelina Guan's age compared to the girls who finished behind her and made the team, so idk if that was a factor, but it could be. I believe all the girls who finished behind her and made the team have 3+ seasons of eligibility left, except maybe Breken.

Also selection to the team isn't just about this one comp. It's based on the results of the past season as well. From reading the doc, I have the impression that most of the decisions are made before this competition based on past results and monitoring (don't know that for sure). Any skater/team who hit the target score for their age bracket at an international event (JGP or other international) is automatically on the team*, for one thing. This applies to Kara – her JGP score from last season was 166.88, which is way over the 145 target for Jr women with 3+ years left. They also consider skills shown at Nationals, Challenge and other comps during the past season. I didn't dig into the list of skills they're looking for, but I know Aleksa did well at Nationals, so that may be why she's on the team.

*For the record, I'm pretty sure Justine would meet this, which is another thing making me think she isn't planning to compete in Jr for the JGP

Some more positive news about the Canadian men for a change:
Aleksa Rakic just competed and won a silver medal at a domestic event in the US, Glacier Falls Summer Classic. (Links for SP protocols and FS protocols)

He landed two clean 4Ts, and scored 219.41 in total despite having a fall on one of his three 3As. Of course, domestic scores are not comparable with international scores, but this was definitely a step forwards compared to some of his skates from last season.
