2023 U.S. Nationals Sr. Men's Free Skate

Nice job on the FS from Jason, even with the slight stumble. Congrats to him on the Silver medal. Ilia looked extra nervous and not his best skate with that fall but congrats to him on the Gold and well deserved! I guess we have a new Natl Champion now and the future moves along. IM should go to 4CC and work out some kinks and learn how to calm himself just a bit more. But so proud of him and his meteoric rise.
Didn't he and Jason both pre-decline 4CC?

He doesn’t have 4CCs minimums and nowhere to get them before 4CCs. Is there anywhere else he could actually go and get them?
Realistically, no. There’s Bavarian Open, but that’s in two days and 4CC is in a week. The best-case scenario is naming Torgashev to Worlds and sending him to Challenge Cup to get his minimums. USfed should send him to Challenge Cup anyway, regardless if he’s named to the team. But I think they’ll name Naumov. I hope not to see a silly skate off at 4CC because that eliminates the bronze medalist. Outside of Ilia, none of the men stood out internationally. Nationals was the skate-off.

If I remember correctly though, WTT participation counts towards world standing. So if Andrew were sent to WTT, he could get a share of prize money—which I’m sure would come in handy—as well as get World standing points that could make him eligible for GP assignments next season
Yes, and he deserves to go. If I were Andrew I'd want WTT as much as Worlds.

LA is overrated. Go NOVA.
Bluntly I am not talking where he lives or trains. I just think that Raf needs to start actively coaching him at his major competitions. The fact is when he is there Ilia does much better. Last year's nationals he basically had the skate of his life Raf was there most likely coaching him somewhat, world's he was not there he bombed the long program and fell to 9th, Junior Worlds Raf was there coaching him, he won. I think that is getting to the point where Ilia needs more from Raf than phone calls and facetime coaching sessions he needs Raf to take over the main coaching duties. They need to do this cancel the ice show that they planning on doing, if the main reason they are doing is money to fund Ilia training then USFS should give them the money that they were going earn doing that, and go to 4CC:s with Raf doing the main coaching and having dad for moral support and see if they works much better because what is happening now is not helping him at this point. He needs to ready for world's it is first major step to the Olympics in 2026. I love his skating he has a gift and he needs to develop to it's full potential and it has to start now. Nationals needs to be the wake up call to make some changes in how Ilia is managed. Raf had done this before with Nathan and he knows what to do with Ilia he just needs to do it.

Weird situations...
three guys have the same FS basically (scored within half a freaking point)
skaters without minimums (😿 ) doing really good ( :cheer2: )

A (maybe silly) advice to the feds where this is a problem - put your Nationals earlier in the season or enter ALL the skaters during fall and early winter into competitions that count.

And to the inevitable discussion about overscoring this and not scoring that enough...
I think we all agree that in a kind of way Ilia and Jason complement each other.
And hey, today the scores show exactely this!

They got:
[TES - PCS]
95.23 - 84.15
84.60 - 93.46

So as much as I think this discussion is interesting in general and there is potential for ISU to do some wise changes for an interesting future of the sport we all love, when only looking on today and this Men's FS - I think that's just what it was and there's no need for (exaggerating) "wuzrobbed" here. In neither direction.

That is where my links came from in the Us nationals rewatch thread where i have all the skates listed in competition order. I have one for each grand prix and major events and some minor ones too if have time. Just search rewatch and you will find them in the forums
@labgoat have you had much success finding videos for 2023 European Championships? I haven't had much luck searching by skaters' names on YouTube for men and dance. I guess the Skating ISU channel will have them. I'm about to catch up on Euros Free Dance before Peacock pulls them down. :)

I apologize for my blunt statement. I think was in a frustrated mood when I typed it.

Nice rationale. I was coming here to say that I think there is room for both. I don't understand why people get so up in arms when someone (not necessarily talking Ilia here, just in general) gets huge scores with a ton of jumps that not many people can do and no transitions/performance value/choreo but then when Jason comes along and gets the huge scores he gets doing the kind of complicated choreo/transitions/performance that no one else is anywhere close to, it is somehow highway robbery.

I do sometimes wish we could see some of the other men try Jason's choreo. I think it would be instructive. I mean, we see Jason and others try and master quads so we know what it looks like when someone can't do that. But we don't know what it looks like when an otherwise excellent skater can't do what Jason does. (As a dance choreographer, I like to think I can imagine, but I'm not a skater.)

I usually don't look for individuals when ISU has them. Even if I find them they come down usually within 3 days so its not worth posting them and aggravating people when they are gone. Better that people figure out how they can view the ISU site. This is why I highly recommend a vpn, it is the key to ISU content that has a much longer lifespan.
