2024-25 British and Irish figure skating

Big well done to Anastasia and Luke, 4th place, got to be our highest placing in pairs, even if its in the short program, really hoping they do great again tomorrow. The good feeling obviusly continued, as Kristen went clean too.

Does anyone know what happened to our other pair Harry and Lydia?

Just thought John and Jennifer Nicks were pretty good back in the day, so maybe the best British pairs for a long time.
 
I recall Stacey Kemp and David King quite well, but I don't think they ever got so high as this.
 
Had to work yesterday so catching up. Fantastic performance from Ana & Luke. I thought they could get top 6 here if they skated well and that is perhaps still the more realistic outcome than a medal. But skating in the final group is a fantastic opportunity for them. Hopefully they can score 120+ in the Free and then see where that lands them.

Fantastic performance from Kristen as well - but holding on to a top 10 position won't be easy. Like Ana & Luke she has been more consistent this season. All you can ask is for skaters to perform their best.

Let's hope Ed Appleby continues the excellent GB performances later this morning.
 
Yay Phebe! I so enjoyed her costume. They skated well too, but that costume did it for me. So fitting, so 60s!

We could have 3 dance and 2 ladies. Kristen is looking in great form and could scrape a top 10 in euros. Same with B&H, top 11 for sure with F&G in the top 2 will do it.

We'll qualify a 2nd pairs team but don't think we have a second senior pair do we?

With the men's, who knows if Ed skates lights out. I'm ever optimistic 🤣

Well done on that prediction. Kristen really is in the form of her life right now. Fantastic to get a 2nd spot for Sheffield; hopefully Nina will go which would be fantastic for her.

Sadly I don't think we'll get a 3rd dance spot. Will be tough for Phebe & James to climb up now and even if they did Lilah & Lewis are in a fight to get another medal; the Italians will need to mess up to lose this.
 
We need a new senior pairs team who are good enough to get the technical minimums and use the second spot Ana and Luke have given us with their amazing 5th place.

When was the last time British skaters placed top 10 in three of the disciplines?

If she can hold her nerve - which she seems to be getting better at - I think there is a reasonable chance that Kristen could qualify for the free at Worlds and thus qualify and olympic spot for GB. I think there is a very good chance that Ana and Luke will and would be very disappointed if Lilah and Lewis didn't. I think Phebe and James are still 50/50 whether they will qualify for the free. Ed is the one I'm least confident about. He would probably need a new PB there to qualify. This means that I am hopeful we can get Olympics spots in 3/4 disciplines. That was not looking likely a couple of years ago. I am even starting to dream that, if there aren't enough countries who qualify in all four disciplines, we could even have a chance of qualifying to the team event. That's more of a dream than a reality at the moment, though.
 
Looking at the cut off for Free qualification at Worlds last year (although mindful that it could well be higher this year) based on their scores at Euros; everyone makes it bar Ed who would miss by a couple of places.

Ana and Luke are consistently scoring in the 60s now; mid 60s when they skate clean so I'm fairly confident they will do well. Top 12 at Worlds is achievable for them with a possible chance of top 10. Hopefully Phebe and James can score 70+ in the RD at worlds - I would be surprised if that wasn't good enough; bearing in mind James had food poisoning they did well at Euros.

Kristen too is more consistent so scoring high 50s should be enough to qualify for free and maybe get a top 20 finish. Don't underestimate how her top 10 here will also have got her a lot more 'noticed' by the International judges. These things shouldn't matter but we all know they do in reality.

I think a similar technical performance at Worlds for Ed plus maybe try to eke out extra marks in the GOE and components and who knows. He's definitely the least likely to qualify though.

I think qualifying for 3 individual events is enough to be eligible to qualify for the Team event; there are some spots which are allocated for individuals who don't qualify so teams can get a 4th entry. There are only so many of these though and a chunk could go to Japanese Ice Dance couple and a Korean Pairs team. USA; Italy and Georgia are the only countries I'd be super confident would qualify people in all 4 disciplines. We will need to wait until the autumn to see how things skae out I suspect. GB has a reasonable chance though.

I honestly think 10 teams is too many for the Team event, 8 is enough even if say Russia are able to compete in Team event in 2030. With quotas reduced to 19 pairs; 23 for Dance and 29 for singles it's harder to qualify and few countries have the depth. That would reduce the chances for GB but thinking more widely it seems the sensible solution.
 
I’m so happy for the British team.
To me, this is the country that has made the most improvements with their figure skating results, after China.
Kristen, after watching the documentary. I forgot what it was called, has improved so much. I love her rivalry with Nina. Now, they both can go to Europeans next season.
The Pairs team has improved so much too and was the biggest wow 😮 factor to me, in terms of improvement and how much closer they got in score to let’s admit it, the two Russian teams that placed in 3rd/4th.
 
Just to let you know, half-Irish Ice Dancer Milla O'Brien is back on Ice Partner Search.

The last time she was on IPS, for the purposes of the index table, she had her citizenship listed as "Ireland". This time, she has it listed as "Switzerland" (which is where she was born, and where she previously represented). But, she still makes clear in the profile itself that she has Swiss, Irish and Finnish passports, and is able to choose which country to represent.

It was disappointing seeing Carolane Soucisse / Shane Firus down in 18th position in Euros. Maybe if they had a hungry young partnership as team-mates, challenging them for the international assignments, it would push them forwards.

We missed out on the opportunity of that scenario when Daniel Kaye was looking a partner. Hopefully we won't with Milla O'Brien.

Canada and France should qualify in all four disciplines unless there are poor SP skates for one of the singles disciplines for Canada or in pairs for France. Poland also have a decent chance - their ice dance team is better than they showed at Euros.

With Korean, it would depend whether there was a unified team like there was for the 2018 Olympics (and there may not be the political motivation now). North Korean has the pairs team South Korea is missing.

Finland are in a very similar position to us, with men again being the weak link. Germany are struggling in ladies and Kristina Isaev is not inspiring me with confidence than she can make the improvement needed. Sweden are weak in pairs
 
So good for Ana and Luke to get to do the gala here, too. I feel like they are the most improved pair this year.

Previous years, I thought they had nice qualities, but everything was a bit rough. This year, they've become so consistent and polished, and most of their former problem elements are much improved.

Dundee skaters always seem well-dressed!

I think Ed is on a steady upward trajectory - I reckon he could definitely qualify. It would be good if he could get sent to more competitions to get more experience. I think he's done really well, especially given the lack of funding that British skaters get, and that he's only competed at 4 international events this season.

Ana and Luke were amazing at Europeans - they've improved such a lot in a very short time - I'd absolutely love for them to medal at Sheffield Euros next year.

I think the whole British team did a fantastic job - such a boost ahead of home Euros in 2026.
