2024-25 Canadian Figure Skating

Uliana wasn't going to be on the National Team. She would have needed to either be on the podium or be assigned to the Senior Grand Prix. That's how Hetty got on the National Team and not Uliana.

I'm not sure what's going on with the NextGen competition entries. I don't want to assume that she isn't under consideration for it considering that there are so few Pairs entries, and it's missing Kemp/Elizarov who should be there. I'll wait and see. I do want to see her compete at a Challenger since she is eligible and she may be able to get the Worlds minimums. But I don't know what her plan is for her career.

Also, the standards for JGP goes from 155 to 163 once you reach 17-18. Also, it seems that if you pick NextGen, Canada seems to restrict you to just the Junior Circuit. Uliana may want to focus on Senior competitions. If she is sent to an international event to get her minimums, I can see a situation where she podiums at Nationals and gets sent to 4CC and potentially even Junior Worlds.

She did Next Gen last year and only got one JGP event early in the season. I would rather have had one international event and then 4CC. Which, perhaps, she would have gotten last season. They key is to be sent internationally to an event. She has the highest score of 168.78 so far, domestically. Hoping she skates well at Wild Rose and convinces SC to obtain just one Challenger event.

Yeah I was just curious to see if they'd put her instead of Hetty as Hetty isn't senior eligible, but I am more than happy to see her on the team--she definitely deserves the credibility and advantages it will give her. Skate Canada would be smart to give Uliana challengers and other senior Bs + I'd love to see another Canadian skater with 4CC/Worlds mins.
I also noticed a few skaters missing from the NextGen competition lineup, such as Abbie Baltzer whose had some success in the past despite a not so great end to last season. Hopefully Ava turns up or is working on getting a new partner who has more years of eligibility in juniors. I'll miss her a lot on the JGP if she doesn't compete this season.

Ah I see, makes sense. Probably of smart of her to do so with Canada's limited opportunities for juniors at the moment. Hoping she has a good season nonetheless!

They had Stephen Gogolev part of the National Team before he was eligible to compete as a Senior internationally, so Hetty was the same.

Uliana scored 168.78 at BC/YT Super Series June, which is above the domestic benchmark of 166 for women for a Senior International. She should be assigned to one if that's what she wants on the basis that she's shown that she can hit the benchmark on at least two occasions. SkatingScores is down, so I'm not going to be thorough on that.

Ava is still competing with Yohnatan, they're entered for CQE. They already competed their short program at Lake Placid, so this is why I'm waiting and seeing what's going on with the JGP assignments.

the free dance is fun! nice to see ballroom (latin) ... we never see this in the free anymore... and rarely in the rd either.... i am glad people who can do it well selected that option. some cool moves, my fave was the dance spin. I didn't like the move on the ice.. no idea how to call it... in french, it's culbute.

He talks about his thoughts on the proposed rule changes from Congress. He also talks about how his new free program was done for the new rules, and he has to change it to go back to the old rules (it was filmed June 20th.) He's keeping his short program from last season as well.
 
Has anybody heard word on the hearing at the Court of Arbitration of Sport regarding Canada's appeal regarding the failure to recalculation of points for the Olympic Team Event 2022 (and Canada's possible bronze medal)? I know that Canada's appeal was due to be heard on July 22. Not sure how long it takes to make a decision - nothing today on the CAS website nor on Skate Canada's website (that I can find).

All I read yesterday (the 23rd) on Canadian news websites was that a decision had not been reached yet. (Still arguing over it?) But I only just turned on the computer a few minutes ago this morning and haven't seen today's news yet.

The only news was from Devin Heroux tweeting that there would be no decision that day (July 22.) I'm not expecting a quick decision, they still haven't announced the results of the Russian appeal.

Roman did not qualify for any GP spots. He wasn't in the top 12 at Worlds and was not in the top 24 for WR or seasons best score. He has a host spot for Skate Canada, which has allowed him to have one GP event. He is 11th on the replacement list for the GP series. That means that he is likely to be in the top ten eligible replacements for other events and it is possible that he might get a second spot if skaters withdraw - but it is by no means guaranteed.
 
ESPN posted their ranking of the 25 greatest Olympians of the 21st century - I thought you might like to know that Virtue&Moir came 11th. Which, given the usual US-centric focus, is pretty damn amazing.

I check Ice Partner Search from time to time, so this really just was a coincidence 😅

They definitely had a lot of potential, hope both of them will find suitable partners soon enough.

I feel like Behnke/Sauve have also split, as both Annika and Kole are entered as singles skaters in multiple competitions now, but not as a pairs team. I'd also be sad if this was the case, but I guess that's the fate of following Junior and Novice pairs (and ice dance) - Most teams inevitably split up 😔

Two of the teams missing from NextGen having split is also doing nothing good for my anxiety about Martina and Charly and Ava and Yohnatan missing too 🫠 Ava and Yohnatan have at least competed already this season, but there's absolutely no info about MarLy 🙃
