2024-25 Canadian Figure Skating

Anyone know what's up with the detail sheets for the men's short program at Tallinn Trophy?
They were published on the Sportity app, Skating Scores was directed there to get the PDFs. The password is TTR2024. Not sure why they weren't published on the site.

It is interesting watching the live scoring on it, it shows the reviews and GOE changes as they're updated.

Kurt Browning’s thoughts regarding the state of Canadian men. Thoughts??

I really liked what Kurt Browning said about skaters in general (e.g. Adam and Kaori) having to pull back on the artistic in order to bring back their technical aspect of the program. Because it is almost impossible to be able to be as expressive as you want to be while also trying to stay focussed enough to get the jumps done well. For example, I noticed that after Yuzuru retired, his artistry in his shows went up a notch. He was great when competing and the GOAT, but now...damn the man can dance and skate. So I appreciate Kurt saying that it is a balancing act and you can't maximize one aspect without the other one suffering. Also, that the balance between artistry and quads is good right now, in his opinion.

I would also agree with him in saying that Adam is the most well rounded skater. In my opinion, today's ideal well rounded men's skater is someone who has 3+ quads and PCS are 8.5-9 at least, plus maybe an optional backflip ;P
My favourite skater is Yuzuru Hanyu and he had all of that (minus the backflip) so naturally I'm gonna compare everyone to him

Did Kurt even voice any thoughts about the Canadian men besides that they're passive? I think he held a lot back because he does appear to have thoughts, but they might not be...kind or politically correct. I can't blame him lol

I’m so happy with our two Canadians:

Sara Maude and Romsky 👏

Both fought for their bronze medals 🥉

This is why I’m happy Skate Canada is sending these skaters to more international events. The reaction of Sara Maude warms my heart. This might have been her biggest achievement just based on that reaction.

The more experience they get plus ranking points is how you improve as a skater.

Robert Brodie covers Sara-Maude's medal:

“When you really look at the big picture, with the number of athletes that have been out internationally for Canada over the years, not a lot have ever won a medal,” explained Mike Slipchuk, Skate Canada’s high performance director. “Your top people tend to win medals often, but a large percentage win maybe one or two medals in their career internationally.

“It is a big thing. (Winning a medal) builds confidence; it shows the work and the direction you’re moving is paying off and you just have to keep going. It’s nice for athletes to get a reward every so often because it’s a hard sport. These Challenger events in the middle of the Grand Prixs tend to not have as many of the top skaters, so it’s a good opportunity (to compete for a medal). And it’s nice to see that some of our athletes, when the opportunity is presented, this year they’ve taken it, which is great.”

I would add that a lot of them may have won only 1 or 2 medals because they don't send out enough. Fee Ann won a medal this fall but when might she get a chance to win another unless she medals at Nationals. Sara-Maude won a medal but the other comps she has been entered in have been big events - SCI and 4CC. She could not be expected to medal in these events except maybe 4CC in an Olympic year.

And Justine also is a medal winner at ACI... (with Kaiya) but when will she earn another spot ?

Article on Katherine Medland Spence before she competes at Warsaw Cup - https://ottawasportspages.ca/2024/1...for-first-international-assignment-in-europe/

It does give some timing to her assignment to Warsaw Cup. She was offered it two days after she competed at the Skate Ontario October competition that she won.
I love this article. The article confirms that if you achieve the domestic benchmark, that Canada will send you to an International event. I’m so happy for her!! I wish her well at Warsaw. Hoping she also scores over 166, at Warsaw. The article listed 160 as the domestic benchmark, which is a typo.
We have 7 Senior Ladies sent to international events this season.
I hope they don’t raise the benchmark any higher.

On CTES watch for tomorrow, here's what's needed in TES scores:

Katherine Medland Spence - 26.31 for 4CC minimums in the short, which is more realistic than the 41.31 needed for Worlds.

Bombardier/Mimar - 45.23 for 4CC, 58.23 for Worlds in the free.

Kaiya would need 35.30 in the short for Worlds, she could narrow what she needs for the free though.

Pairs at Nationals this year is going to be a fight for the 2nd and 3rd spots.
And with the 7 Sr ladies that have been sent out they all have a chance to medal at Nationals. The 3 medalist will be the 3 that hold it together best over the two programs. We saw last year that they are not going to hold Maddie up if she doesn't skate well. But at least with our ladies get out there they might be better prepared for 4CCs. Still think that as long as Maddie Medals she will be sent to worlds.

I think Trennt and Lia are quite secure in the number 2 spot... but Kelly Ann and Loucas could indeed upset them. I think the fight could be between teams 3 and 4.... Fiona and Ben are improving. Their twist is not great yet but if they land things and others don't it could be tight. Women will be the competition to watch for sure.
Men will be the last man standing sort of thing
Dance will be fun too... 1 and 2 seem pretty secure but I don't see Lauriault and Le Gac ahead of Fabbri Ayer anymore.

Lauriault/Le Gac have struggled so much this season. There's been a number of occasions where world standings would indicate they should be medalling at events, and yet they are well down the rankings. Fabri/Ayer: the judges love their rhythm dance, their free dance, not so much. Bashynska and Beaumont seem to be moving backwards, when I thought they might surpass both other teams. I'll be curious to see where
Sales/Wamsteeker are, if they've managed to regain their previous form (they are still together, right? I haven't heard anything about them this season).

Honestly none of these teams are doing as well internationally as I'd like this season, they all seem to be struggling. Canada used to have a really deep ice dance field, but I don't think that's true anymore. The top two are in great shape, still, but if either was to get injured out there's nobody near their level to replace them at this point. When Piper and Paul retire (likely after the next Olympics) there's the fantastic Lajoie/Lagha, but then there isn't another world top 10 team in the offing — at least not from what we've seen from the teams this season so far.

I think they are not going to compete... we haven't seen them anywhere and sectionals have happened already.

Well... I am remain confident. BB are having a rough season but he was injured so I give them a pass. Some of the juniors are promising. Fabbri-Ayer are very good... they need better material : will IAM give it to them ? I think we are lucky that LaLa are so young and could be competing for several more years if they want to and health agrees to it.. that should give enough time to develop another top team for Canada. It's nice to have so many great teams but then, it also means that they don't get out... and get discouraged. Look at Asher Hill's two teams... or at Paradis-Ouellette, Paul/Islam... or even Shane and Caro who jumped ship...
If the goal for Lauriault- Le Gac was to go to the O games, they better watch out because they are risking big right now with all these mistakes they are making.

Is it possible that Maddie doesn't travel well. She did so much better at SCI but it just was not there today. She got some of levels up but lost points on her jumps this time. And there are so many young skaters that are moving above her that unless she lays down a skate of her life (like at the Olympics) she is going to keep dropping. At this point she may not even make the free skate at worlds.
