2024-25 Canadian Figure Skating

I found the official document here

Here's the relevant text:

If I'm reading this correctly, the ranking is according to World Standings and applies to all skaters. Note it says they "reserve the right"; not that they will. I think there is some flexibility, particularly if a fed chooses to send skaters with better recent results.

Or maybe it only applies to the top skater per discipline. Does "best ranked" only mean first ranked or does it mean "best one or two per discipline"? Damned if I know!
I definitely think there's flexibility since right now Alysa Liu is behind Amber Glenn, Isabeau Levito, Elyce Lin-Gracey and Bradie Tennell in the standings after winning Worlds. I don't think there'd be any issues if the USA sent her over other skaters currently ranked higher. Or Jason Brown over Camden Pulkinen.

Patrick Chan returns to competition

Oh is or was this an April's Fool's day prank. Darn because if he got back to his pas levels he'd beat Jason Brown. And truly him and Keegan are better than what we have. I appreciate Roman did well for him at worlds.

I know I harp on this but I believe he Excellence Performance or wwhaever they call i direcgor is making ovef $150,000 or maybe even $200,000 a year. it might be time for them o go and get some fresh blood. Canada is really stagnant. That being said I give Maddie and Roman full credit for doing their best. i am sure no onemeans to have a bad competition. In singles normally Maddie's skates and scores would be top ten.

as for pairs, well yes, i was disappointing they lost three spots and both Max and Deanna and Lia and rennt seemed to take steps backwards. Hopefully they can find the fight to come back.

I hope there is some upcoming talent. Right now Canada's best medal chances are two older skating teams in pairs and dance.

I guess the positive is that in the Olympic team only one singles skater for each discipline is required which may give them a very outside chance a team bronze behind USA, Japan and then Italy, France and maybe Georgia and Canada.

yes it was for April's fool.

At the same time, it wasn't about Worlds performance but the simple fact that our Nationals were depleted by injuries and illnesses.

Maddie was wonderful at worlds and in any other year where she participated, her 190 score would have meant top ten. She was a bit unlucky with how things unfolded to finish 11. One of the top ten skaters could easily have scored a bit less ;) but it didn't happen.

I am just as proud of Roman who didn't pop a single jump (maybe the back end of the combo in the SP ..but even then). He is fighting his nerves still, he may never get to the point where he can skate freely like some others do... but what he did at Worlds was very good.

Deanna and Max had a rough outing. It happens. Our three pairs didn't do that badly.. they just all miss a bunch of points for missing their SEQ in the LP. When that happens, you get very low scores.... Ironic considering that SBS jumps are not really an issue for Canadian pairs right now... I am not worried about Loucas and Kelly Ann and definitely not about Trennt and Lia usually. Deanna and Max : I sometimes doubt of their 3s but at both recent worlds, they made it happen....

Dance : our teams did very well. The judging is what it is.

So, in my opinion, we have a stronger team than in 2022. Will it be enough for a bronze medal... it will be played at the games. The competition for medals is too tight at this point and strategy will be a factor too. With the quotas earned and the skaters we've got, Canada will probably use only one entry per discipline.

Finally, one can blame Slipchuk all they want but he has something he will always be able to back up himself with : he made the most ouf ot 2018 games. When the contenders were there, they received the support and guidance they needed and they won the team event... They were also the first team not to use all their entries (sad for Weapo but at that time, the gold was the goal) to make sure that Canada earns as many points as possible and wins this thing... and that wasn't in the absence of ROC.

So there you go. If you have created champions with the talent available then, and you don't create champions when the talent is great but perhaps not at the level of Osmond ,Chan, Virtue/Moir, and Duhamel/Radford, you don't get fired. You transparently say, I am doing my best with what I have.

Canada is a very small country in terms of population. The sport scene is dominated by hockey. I rejoice that our skaters, though there is a lack of depth, are still fighting and remain competitive against nations who have tons to choose from like Japan, Korea and the USA. What Maddie did was exceptional.

I am watching CBC's tv coverage... some highlights ... I had recorded it last weekend but didn't watch until now.

Carol Lane was shocked at Marjorie and Zach's low score in the Free Dance.

She's always candid in her comments and her "oh my.... didn't expect that" didn't heal my recent wound but certainly gave me a sense that I wasn't alone in being completely shocked by that score and ranking.

I have said it in other threads, the Eastern European judging block is back.... It is clear that there is an agenda to raise the profile of the Georgians ahead of the team event of the Olympics.... and some are willing to do whatever they need to do to make this happen... it's very unsettling as a fan... I am almost done with the sport at this point.

I am with you 4everchan, I am not sure there is any reason to watch these events anymore when the judges seem to play favorites to certain skaters from certain countries.
One good thing we can take from Boston's worlds is that at least when a CAN skater or team have medaled at worlds they have earned it. In fact they have over earned it in most cases.

I miss Rose so much!! I hope she is doing well and I hope she has a good SP at this competition.

Is she still with Ravi?

Is this upcoming competition part of this season or next season? I guess we will find out in the SP with the single loops 😜

I think she still is with Ravi since the competition is held by Ice Palace. She was at the Patinage Quebec camp held with Rafael Arutyunyun last week too.

They posted an amendment to the announcement that they would be following 2025-26 program requirements, so Juniors will be doing loops and flying sit spins in the short (y)

OMG... both loops and flying sit spins... i have a feeling we will see a lot of problems next year in juniors

Ashley Cain posted pictures from working with pairs at a camp with Patronage Quebec. Third picture is of Etienne Lacasse and Julia Quattrocchi together 👀
not surprised that they would try out

I like your typo here :)

Wait!! I recall….. Didn’t Julia just edge out Etienne and his partner for bronze at Junior Nationals?

What happened to Simon, her partner? Did Simon retire? Did she end her partnership with Simon and pick Etienne?

Sorry if this was already answered. What the hell happened??
