2024-25 Canadian Figure Skating

I'm just catching up with the WTT. I'd really like to see Aleksa Rakic do some work with someone who can develop his performance and skating skills. The technical foundations are there, but the rest is lacking. He has the potential to do a lot more.

Edit: I'd like to see what Ravi could do with him.

I watched some of Sunsational.

Rose Theroux competed her new short program (Angel by the Wings by Sia.) Her content was watered down (3T+2T, 3S), she had a fall on her step sequence at the end and laughed it off. It's nice to see her competing and laughing off the mistake at her first competition back since August.

Parker Heiderich competed his new short (Asturias). He had some issues with the flying sit spin, but it's April. He looks to be staying Junior for next season. It's his last season of eligibility and he's coming off a 4th at 2024 Novice Nationals and a 4th at 2025 Junior Nationals. Hopefully he'll make it on the podium for 2026.

Lovely update.
I’m so glad to see Rose is back. Considering her talent, she should be a fixture for Nationals.

I watched WTT.
Dance - met expectations
Pairs - Deanna and Max seem to be solidly the 5th best team this year. I want them to at least beat one of the Georgian or Italian teams in the free skate
Men - Aleksa met expectations by solidly beating Morris. Romsky was a pleasant surprise with a 230+ score and placing 8th overall. He beat the 9th and 10th place finishers from Boston Worlds. Besides the opening pop on his 4S, his triples were landed better than at Worlds. Also, loved him changing his last jumping element from 2A to 3Lo.

Ladies - Maddie was great until that fall on the 3Lo. SMD was robbed and should be 6th after SP. I hope she scores 120+ in the free skate.

He's setting himself up well for next season with his performances, especially with how he's been able to handle mistakes.

Next season 😭🤞

Well, Canada was a distant 5th at WTT. All the teams were isolated in their standings. Canada is going to have to work hard if they want a bronze medal at the Olympics in the team event, in front of a home crowd.

Deanna & Max were a distant 4th again. They weren’t even close to the Georgian or Italian team.

SMD - that was her worse free skate ever…. I was in tears 😭 watching that free skate. She really does peak at 4CC.

Maddie impressed me. I didn’t know she had a 3F 3T in her repertoire. 👏
She also went for a second 3Lz (where was this fight at Worlds?). I actually think her 2A is her hardest jump.

Overall, Romsky and Maddie impressed me here. They actually both showed potential for top ten placement for Worlds and Olympics. Romsky needs to regain the 3F and skate more freely, like at this event, and Maddie needs to focus on the 2A jumps at the end. But, both showers progress and may have just secured their spots for the Olympics with this event.

Sara-Maude Dupuis : I really enjoy her SP and thought that she was underscore here. But, her FS program was not good. I think that this event was important for her to etablish herself as the 2nd best canadian ladies. And for me, she fail with that FS program. To me, Kaiya Ruiter is still the best 2nd canadian ladies. The only reason why Kaiya is not the 2nd best canadian ladies right now is because she have put ambitious combo jump with triple/triple that was ur at national, if Kaiya have choose to go to a clean triple / double combo jump at national, she would have been the 2nd place finisher at national this year.

I prefer a Kaiya Ruiter who push herself into difficult jump like her triple flip / triple toe or triple lutz / triple toe, over Sara-Maude Dupuis who doesn't push herself in difficult element and do only triple toe / triple toe or triple / double combo jump.

Sara-Maude Dupuis have potential for sure, but she need to work on her jump technic especially the loop and the flip who are always boderline Q or ur.

Do you think Maddie's sequence in her long program is supposed to be 3loop 2A 2A?
I think Maddie intends to do 3Lo 2A 2T. If she pops her 2A to a 1A which happens often, then instead of a 2T she goes for another 2A to save the combo. Which, is why it looks like she intends to do a 3Lo 2A 2A. Her last jump is a 2A which shows that if everything goes according to plan, it should be a 3Lo 2A 2T

Kaiya finished behind Sara-Maude at Nationals, Katherine at Warsaw Cup and Uliana at Denis Ten Memorial. She's in the mix, but so are other women.

And Sara-Maude has been pushing herself. She's increasing the difficulty in her free skate with a second 3Lz. Doing a 3T-3T in the short has worked for her this season, especially with the back loaded 3Lz.

Kaiya has some ways to go before she establishes herself as the second best Canadian woman for me. Doing a harder combination in the short isn't enough when it hasn't been going clean. Other women have pushed themselves with a 3Lz-3T in the short, like Uliana, Kara and Lia. It isn't the difficulty that matters, it's landing it that does in competition.
