@norwegianfairytale - I don't suppose you could do me a favour.

I've just found out that Vayana Hristova now has an ISU Bio, and it says she is skating to "Ne Me Quitte Pas" by Céline Dion for her SP, and "Symphony For The Devil" by The Rolling Stones for her FS.

Vayana Hristova ISU Bio: https://results.isu.org/bios/isufs00115649.htm

The thing is, these are the songs that Vayana's older sister Chiara is using for her programmes this season.

Chiara Hristova ISU Bio: https://results.isu.org/bios/isufs00111207.htm

Of course, they might actually be using the exact same music. After all, Vayana was looking to switch to Pairs. So, when that didn't materialise, it would have been too late to organise completely new programmes, so they could have just adapted her sister's programmes.

But, personally, I think it is more likely to be a mistake on Vayana's ISU Bio.

So, could you check to see if the two sisters were actually using the same music in both their programmes?

In the Junior Ladies SP, Chiara started at #12 and Vayana started at #26.
In the Junior Ladies FS, Vayana started at #5 and Chiara started at #26.

It would be funny if they were using the same music. This week was the first time in 8 years that they have competed directly against each other, so it was always going to be fascinating to see how they compared. If they were using the exact same music, it would make it even more fascinating.

I checked the SP, took me some time to find them, it seems the ISU bio is right for Vayana - she skated to Dion in her SP, Chiara however skated to something very classical - sorry I don´t recognize the music right away, I think it might be Mozart? It´s something they for sure are playing on the big new years concert in Vienna every year - certainly not Dion 😅

Could they perhaps have mixed up the sister somehow in the ISU bios?

You're right. It's Chiara's programmes that are wrong. I just went back to the videos from her Junior GP, and she skated to "Don Quixote" in the SP, and a song I don't know in the FS.

Why didn't I think of checking the JGP videos before?! :palmf:

Thank you so much for checking the livestream. I know from personal experience how difficult it can be to find particular skaters within a long video.  :points:

I have to be honest, in previous seasons, I have tended to like Vayana's programmes more than Chiara's. So, that was why I was curious to find out what was going on.

Thank you again.

:thank:

Wooops, not Mozart, but classical indeed. I was thinking about an Olympic program when I heard the music, and I should have recognized it was Don Quixote anyways. I was thinking for sure a Russian skater had done it, but couldn´t really decide if it was Zagitova or not, but couldn´t really make up my mind if it was the same music or not. The question is, do they play Don Quixote at the yearly new years concert in Vienna or am I imaging things?

Sometimes we don´t think about the easiest way to check things, I didn´t mind checking though, and I enjoyed watching Chiaras program!

Edit: Apparently I´m far off, they only play music by Johann Strauß - I watched this concert so many years but never occurred to me it was the same composer :palmf: Why do I think they play Mozart? Probably because he is strongly connected to Vienna...

You are right, Chiara uses different samples in her programme to what Alina used in her programme.

Don't I know it! I frequently make things difficult for myself without realising there is as simpler way! :drama:

But, I'm glad you enjoyed the programmes.

It took me a long number of years as well to realise that the New Year's Day concert was nearly exclusively Strauß music. However, it is not just one Strauß; it is the whole family - Johann I, Johann II, Josef, Eduoard, etc.

That said, the Vienna Philharmonic do usually include the odd piece by other composers that are not part of the extended Strauß family, but are contemporary with them. But not many.

Ludwig Minkus, who composed "Don Quixote", was based in Vienna at the same time as the Strauß family. Indeed, he was a direct competitor of Johann II when they conducted rival orchestras in the city. I may be wrong, but I am nearly sure that his music has been included in the New Year's Concert as an example of work by a composer contemporary with the Strauß family.

Glad to find another person who enjoys the New Year's Concert.

Have you tried the Vienna Philharmonic's Summer Night Concert? The guest performer at the 2024 edition was Norwegian soprano Lise Davidsen. And it was funny, because she was also the guest performer on the 2023 Last Night Of The Proms, which we had only got around to watching about a week beforehand. And she did exactly the same songs!

As I have made clear many times, I am not a fan of female opera singing. And Lise was no exception. But, she came across as a really lovely girl in the interview the BBC showed during the interval at the Last Night, and I took a real liking to her.

And now I learned something new again, there is a whole family of composers! And it doesn´t seems unlikely they included Minkus music in the concert, so now I don´t feel as stupid.

Nothing is like starting a new year with this concert. It´s a lovely tradition, which my father does too.

I havn´t heard the Summer Night Concert, I should probably do so. I´m not very familiar with opera music, nor Norwegian sopranos, it seems you know more then me

It was only a few years ago that I discovered that there was more than one Strauß too. It doesn't help that they kept recycling names.

It has been a tradition in my family too to start the year with the Vienna Philharmonic. My Mum and I love watching it together every year.

I only found out about the Summer Night Concert by chance about 3 or 4 years ago. And we started watching it too. It's an outdoor concert held in the gardens of the Schönbrunn Palace in June. And, as such, there are a lot more people attending than the New Year's Concert. HOWEVER, it doesn't get broadcast LIVE (at least not in the British Isles anyway, where it is broadcast a month later).

I know nothing about sopranos! I only took an interest in Lise because she is young, pretty, and a generally nice person! ;)
