Piper shared that they want to showcase a “little Barbie moment” with the costumes.

“Especially here, we felt that was really important,” she said. “Instead of people being like, ‘why do they keep changing their outfits’ and they start questioning maybe they don’t believe in what they’re doing. So, we wanted to make it very clear that this is what we’re doing. We’re just going to make a decision on the day and make it fun for people, because in the end, they’re just going to be like, ‘Oh, what are they going to wear today? Because I know they have a whole wardrobe of outfits.'”
I really enjoy their RD this season. Not feeling "Whiter Shade of Pale" yet.
“I think after yesterday, we really wanted to just concentrate on today and step by step,” said Lajoie. “And I think that’s why we were able to perform very well, because we were really focused on the present moment. We’re not thinking about yesterday or anything else.”

“It was hard because what happened yesterday was almost out of my control,” added Lagha.
I've always loved this version of "Sound of Silence" so it will be one of my top five this year!

I also enjoyed Zingas/Kolesnik's FD.

How about you! What programs grabbed you in the Ice Dance event? What are your thoughts on the placements?

What I liked here was that many teams took the terribly defined, all over the place rhythm dance theme and just ran with it. No ass shaking at the boards!
I of course loved Piper and Paul, although they should really rethink their choice of FD constumes ( I didn't mind Paul's holey suit as much as the plastic-y, beige thing Piper wore). I can't stand the Beach Boys but their RD was brilliant.

I also absolutely loved Lopareva and Brissaud's FD look and style. The music not so much. Also enjoyed both Taschler programs, Cruella, Z/K's RD, LaLa's FD (although I would't have rated them that much higher than the French team, them music did a lot of the heavy lifting). The Browns need better packaging.

Paul's backless jacket didn't make sense to me, but then he and Piper have always been a little "out there." Ice dance can be so staid and ordinary sometimes and you can always depend on Gilles and Poirer to shake things up. I really enjoyed their Whiter Shade of Pale. The choreography was fresh and unique and they are wonderful to watch. I really, really enjoy the Browns. They are so much fun and Gage especially really gets into the music. Marjorie and Zachary are beautiful on the ice.

My thoughts: I never thought I would say this but I do not like Gilles/Poirier's FD. Maybe I will grow to it, but I cannot stand it right now and it probably has alot to do with Annie Lennox singing it. There are some songs that I do like of hers but for the most part, they have been doing alot of Annie Lennox or songs well known of hers sung by others in the last few years and it just seems stale. I do love their RD though.

Winner of the Ice Dance programs was La/La FD and Lim/Quan FD. I also liked the Czech's FD.

Just caught up on the Free Dance. Overall, this event was pretty solidly meh for me. The only teams who I really resonated with across both programs were the Browns and (to my surprise) Lopareva/Brissaud. I enjoy the Taschlers, as always, but the music in the free dance isn't to my personal taste.

I've never really clicked with Lopareva/Brissaud so I was really pleasantly surprised to find their RD enormous fun, and be completely sucked in with their techno cyberpunk-esque FD! It's totally fresh and different from the rest of the field, and it feels bold, fearless and exciting. Really looking forward to seeing how both programs develop!

The Browns I already love, and man was their James Brown program a breath of fresh air. Their choreography and interpretation felt specific and intentional in a way I missed with a lot of the rest of the field, and they're as charismatic and fast as ever. I also thought their FD was a total home run, though naturally they'll want to get their levels up in the future.

I'm reserving judgement on Lajoie/Lagha's RD until next time, since it wasn't clean and the fall clearly threw both of them off for the rest of the program. The FD... they performed it very well, but I just absolutely loathe that cover of The Sound of Silence so I can't fairly evaluate a program I'll be watching on mute all season. Zingas/Kolesnik... still haven't clicked with them, sorry. Lim/Quan, really awful music editing and cuts in the RD, the FD feels like it needs more work to keep the middle section engaging and maybe a stronger character for Ye Quan. Even if he's playing her minion, he could be more eager to please or more aggressive or more pathetic, or a literal dog she's about to kill, I don't know, just something that creates a bit of tension and interest between them.

Speaking of needing a stronger concept, Gilles/Poirier's FD. You give vague you get vague. I saw an interview where Paul said the program was "ambiguous" and the lyrics "made no sense" and would therefore not enlighten the audience as to the program's meaning, so uh... that's a bit of an alarm bell. I don't mind not being spoonfed a concept but that just sounds indecisive to me. Very disappointing, especially since last year's FD was the closest I've come to genuinely enjoying their programs in a long, long time. Obviously they're under no obligation to please me (or anyone) but I do hope they refine both programs before their next outing and clear up their intentions with the FD especially.

A lot of teams here had what I thought to be a strong artistic vision in their free dances- Gilles & Poirier, Taschlerova & Taschler, Zingas & Kolesnik. Lopareva & Brissaud were my favourites. Uncompromising and a bit scary!
I feel really bad for Bratti and Somerville. They're brilliant but yet again, another freak fall.

I'm still mystified as to why the second Canadian team scored so high in the RD. Even if the fall wasn't in the element it was still really disruptive and it affected their performance a lot in my opinion. And they were up against teams that were strong here. Did reputational scoring/crowd reaction help them here?

Someone on G/P's team must love Annie's "Medusa" album from 1995, lol. I love the tango section of their FD but I'm not crazy about the music or their costumes.

I was surprised how much I enjoyed the L/B techno program, it reminds me of one of their show programs but it suits them. I usually find them incredibly boring to watch.

La/La are the best skaters of the younger teams, but I wish they had chosen something a bit less obvious than the Disturbed version of SOS, only because it's been done before and I think Yuma is also skating to it this season? Maybe it will grow on me, I hope they continue to solidify themselves as the #2 ID team in Canada.

Re: the US teams. I'm concerned that Ian Somerville keeps falling - he's amazingly talented but people keep saying that Emily is the weaker skater but at least she stays on her feet. Of all the US teams, I enjoy the Browns the most due to their skating skills (I'm biased as I'm from Long Island, too) but Oona made an uncharacteristic error on her twizzles. If they want to rise up, they can't afford any mistakes. I'm mixed on Z/K, they have star quality and good programs and will probably be the bronze medalists at Nationals but I'm not loving them yet.

I also enjoyed the Taschlers's and L/Q programs. All in all this was a good event with some great teams at Skate Canada!

I think the Tango part was the only part of the G/P FD that I loved. Me thinks Carol Lane is a diehard Annie Lennox fan. ;) Since she choreographed both programs this year and last.

There were 6-7 of my favorite teams competing so I had a great (if tense) weekend. Impressions:

G/P’s RD was fun and clever, one of the best of the season. Their free dance was
lovely and something of a throwback. The tango section is a treat! I hated Paul’s backless tux in the free and would have preferred something more elegant that showed off his posture and line. PP skated a bit conservatively but they are obviously well prepared and not planning on being second in Boston.

LaLa are so talented, I really want to see them do well this year. Bad luck on the fall, which ultimately didn’t damage anything except Zach’s temper. I enjoyed the RD otherwise, which is clever and suits them. The free is beautiful but I truly hate that version of the S&G. Maybe I will get used to it.

I’ve been a fan of L/B what seems like forever - their two space punk techno dances are very entertaining. I was in the minority loving their RD last year. I hope they will stay their quirky selves!

Zingas/Kolesnik are my favorite team and I absolutely love their free (my favorite FD so far this year.) They skated the RD well, but were uncharacteristically a bit flat in the last section of their free. The moose head cursed all the Americans’ Twizzles - I felt like we needed a plaque on the wall in Halifax in memory of fallen ice dancers! ZK finished the day .19 out of fourth. They’re back home tweaking their FD with Benoit.

If anyone was going to knock ZK out of the top four I’m glad it was the Taschlers. They’re so fast and strong - I love their free. I think they’re chronically underrated and I was so happy to see them recognized

I felt the competition in Halifax was stronger and more interesting than SKAM. On to France!

This was by far my favourite discipline.

Piper and Paul were brilliant with brilliant material this season. I was initially nervous when they announced their music selections — I thought both might be duds. But both are genius. Amidst all the disco their RD is the best of the season and like a breath of fresh air. And their FD mix of tango with Annie Lennox is so sophisticated and interesting, with so much great choreography.

Lajoie/Lagha's free program is great and really builds. It shows off their speed and power. I'm more mixed on their RD, which of course had a big error. I think they could have come up with something more original, I guess.

Lim/Quan's FD to Cruella is wonderful. Great choreography and she sells it like the star she is.

Zingas/Kolesnik's contemporary was also really welcome. It's a great piece, but does still need some work on their precision to perfect it.

These four made me really excited about ice dance this season.
