2025-2026 Canadian Figure Skating

Yeah... but this was really a huge opportunity for a top 10 - she's never going to get a better opportunity, so it's unfortunate that the skate was a bit ragged and just not what she needed. Level two step sequence was a bummer. Besides the the leaders, the marks throughout the top 10 were not particularly high - definitely scores that Maddie could have attained if she'd had her best skates, so it's just unfortunate that the stars didn't align. All the best to her in the free skate.
Is it really ? Her top score this season was 66 and dust, which would have put her in 13th place. To get the top ten this time, she would have needed 68,51, considering her PB from 2023 in a challenger event (so perhaps inflated a bit) is 69,76, it was always a tall order.

I am not happy with the loop or the level 2... but I am fine with 15th and that score. I hope she skates a great LP.

What an unexpected post - I'm not sure if I've ever seen a post from you that just roasts the Canadian skating program and points out how bad they are compared to the past.

Oh wait ... I forgot, that's actually the only type of post I've ever seen from you!

I share your feelings of disappointment that Maddie isn't likely to get a top 10 placement, but when we say she's been given so many chances, it makes it sound like there were all these other skaters that could do better that we passed over in order to give Maddie undeserved opportunities.

The fact is, she has beaten them all many times, and there are a thousand 'what-if' scenarios. But she earned the spot, and she has what she has. Women's skating is incredibly deep, which is great for viewers, but of course makes it very challenging in terms of success - if you're measuring it by metal count or top 10 finishes.
In the competition threads, we were discussing the chances of Korean skaters to reach three spots. For that, they'd need to place 13 in cumulative ranking points... and of course there are a lot of scenarios but the most plausible ones are 5-8 or 6-7.

Well. even for Korean skaters, when stacked up against Japanese and American skaters, it's a tall order.

The 3 Japanese and 3 American skaters are all in top 10. Even the European champion didn't make top ten. So I think perhaps that Maddie has been so close yet so far away last year is just misleading on what we are perceiving.

She is a good skater and has been the best in Canada with the best 3lz-3toe among our Canadian women. She is deserving of her opportunities. Sometimes she did well... sometimes she didn't. But at the same time, when the top ten has 3 Japanese skaters, 3 American skaters, 1 (could have been two Koreans) it's hard to see how she can make it up there with some of the European stars too.
Let's be realistic. A top 12-15 is great.

Fair enough. I guess I was just thinking that in the last couple years, you always knew that if she was clean she would probably score in the high 60s; you're right, though, that her ceiling doesn't seem so high lately...

Its not out of the realm of possibility for Canada to get 3 spots in pairs back. Which I would love so both L/E and K/E could go to worlds next year..

If Lia and Trennt hold onto 3rd, L/E would need to move up two spots, the Brits and the 3rd American team both have lower SB and the Arm team is basically tied.

Specifically though, they have lower free skate scores than L/E.

Cannot help to think thet Gogo is in good position for top ten. He is in 5th after the SP, much closer to the bronze medal than to the 10th place when we look at scores.

He had the 3rd best TES so he was rewarded for his elements. Bravo. His PCS is fair I would say, at least, it was 40 and dust which means not below 8. I am fine with that though 1-2 more points would work for me best :)

He will skate in the final flight just after Yuma. This is a difficult order for anyone but Stephen has shown a lot of calm this season and I hope he keeps trusting in his ability.

I think GoGo should be in 3rd place. He still is getting low GOE. But this is due in part to him skating in an earlier group.
Also wonder if he stays in the top 10 will that change some CAN men's plans (esp Roman) for next year knowing 2 men will get to go to worlds.

Not wanted to count chickens too early but I think Wesley Chiu could surprise next year. He showed remarkable improvement this year from his surgery and, although a bit inconsistent, he has beautiful jumps and not bad skating skills and interpretation. Hope he stays healthy. He could be a credible #2 for Canada. But would need to be seen a lot internationally to make that work

I think he should be 4th.. because Shun should be third and Selevko 5th ;). but I agree with the main point of your post.

Selevko skated his best SP in a long time. He is a nice skater but I think some of the scores were generous. Judges love him but they need to stop pretending he is Patrick Chan. 1 quad toe SP above 95 should really be for an exceptional skater in the GOE and PCS department. In my opinion, he is very good, even excellent but not exceptional.

I think it will be exciting.. of course, Chicken farmers sponsor Skate Canada, so maybe we are a bit ahead of ourselves.. but I also see how the younger skaters may climb up the rankings slowly but surely over the next couple years.

At their age, stability is lacking but when they get there, with the talent shown by the likes of David Bondar, John Kim and Edward Vasii, I can imagine that with Wesley and Stephen we could have a good crowd of contenders. (and Grayson pending on his ability to acquire stable quads)

Let's hope that if GoGo stays in the top 10 , which he should, that Skate Canada sends our other men out more next season so who ever ends up second in Canada is known internationally. Their GOE and PCS can only improve if they get seen more and show they can be consistent.

I don't know... he has so much more speed, flow, ice coverage and expression then steven. Yes, Stephen's choreography and transitions might be superior in places, but Alexander's presentation is early at a different level than Stephen's at the moment, and I would argue the same about his skating skills as well. He definitely has the "it factor" that Stephen lacks thus far.

HOWEVER, I think Goglolev is more likely to skate a solid free then alexander, so it's really going to be all about how the Japanese skaters perform. A lot of the practice reports that I've been reading have suggested that Sato is having a pretty up and down experience here in Prague...

Wow!!
The Canadians are skating so well!!

GoGo!! Skated with so much confidence. All the jumps were 👌
In 5th place with Yuma behind and Selevko ahead…. I can see him finishing in 5th or 6th place. Wow!!

Now, to pairs, I was sad Kelly Ann and Loucas skated their worst free skate of the season. There was potential for three secured spots for next season. But, they only finished in 19th place 😔

Lia & Trentt were wow!! They finally put together a strong free skate. A small silver medal and overall surprise bronze medal…. Congrats!!

My only criticism is they could have grabbed silver had they added the second 2A 😡

If Trennt had just landed the 3S they would have a silver

I've been a fan of the Pereira/Michaud team since their debut, but being honest, I never thought this would happen for them. What a great way to close out the season, and you'd have to think this motivates them to continue on (though if Trennt in particular is ready to pack it in, this is obviously a great note to end things on).

Canada has been relying on the Vancouver generation for its medals for the past 16 years. Lia & Trennt are our first Worlds medalists from Generation Z, and if you had asked me a year ago, I would have bet anything that Marjorie & Zach would have that distinction.
