2025-2026 Canadian Figure Skating

Entries for Riga are out... they could be place holders as Skate Canada had to send them before the Next Gen and of course, they can sub skaters.

Men : Grayson
Pairs : Jazzy and Kiki, Ava and Yoni (not using a third spot apparently...) (there were only 4 teams listed the two subs being Julia and Étienne as well as Marly)
Dance : Layla and Alexander
Women : Camila Volkova (Victoria wasn't on the sub's list...)

See, I called it.

At the same time, maybe they wanted to see her compete first. Monitoring is one thing.... We will see if her name appears on either the Subs list or as a competitor in the next events now that she's the only woman who has reached the required scores (other than ineligible Lia) They're still sending a Russian born skater so you should be happy ;)

Victoria doesn't have competition results for the last season, NextGen was her first competition in some time with entries due before the end of NextGen.

It may also be easier for her to travel to a different JGP based on visa requirements. She'll get an assignment, just not this one. It's only the first set of entries after all.

She is not on a sub list which lists everyone else in both men and women based on the NextGen results. Something is not right. Probably RusFed again.

They submit the subs at the same time as the entries

Camila is not Russian-born. She is a bone fide Canadian. You can't compare her to Shiryaeva or Barkhatina in terms of obstacles she faces.

As @saine mentioned, they probably wanted to see her before including her in the roster. The selection was due before the Next Gen was finished. It is too soon to worry.... By the third JGP, if she doesn't appear, then something is up..

Are you sure about that ? Martine Dagenais has lived and coached in Russia. I had never even heard of her until Aleksa moved to QC to represent Canada... Also, my comment was tongue in cheek... but we need to investigate now... Where were the Volkova sisters born ?

It doesn't matter to me. Her mother is a Canadian. She had citizenship through her mother. Hence, she doesn't represent me. I root for those who represent me the most. Those who have to prove that they are not a camel as we say in Russia.

Fair enough. Give it time. It took to long for Uliana to be able to represent Canada internationally but I doubt it will take that long for Victoria.
She's better equipped and has better coaching staff. I'd be VERY surprised if she doesn't get one of the five spots. I would even give her two which is not something I would have said about Uliana a couple years ago. You may not see a big difference in their skating but I did... at least, over the weekend. The jumps are bigger and safer, with better technique... So in the long run, they may be more stable. She skates with more speed and flow. Her glide is better. She needs to connect a bit more but she can learn that...

The sub list is definitely not based on NextGen, that should be obvious to anyone. Lulu is on the Women's sub list while Hannah Quinn and Sandrine Blais are not, for example. Sandrine's (and Jeffrey Chen's) absence makes it clear that they submitted this list before the SP even happened.

In Ice Dance and Pairs, the results were not unexpected (apart from Quattrocchi / Lacasse already beating Ariano Kent / Laliberte Laurent). Most of the teams not on the list are very new teams with either partner not having much prior experience, or teams moving up from Novices, which is a big step up in both partnered disciplines.

Also, Victoria only has a Russian passport. It will be easier to send her elsewhere, like Abu Dhabi or Bangkok, where she will not have to apply for a visa.

So I am guessing that the 5 spots Canada has doesn't include Baku for women ? I mean, Azerbaijan is probably a country where a Russian skater wouldn't need a visa ?

No, Canada doesn't have any Singles spots at JGP Turkey or JGP Azerbaijan. So the two easiest options for Vika would be the two JGPs in Thailand and the United Arab Emirates. Could be a blessing or a curse, depending on which skaters will be sent there.

If she only have Russian passport, RusFed will not allow the transfer as per their rule (needs citizenship). I mean, fingers crossed and everything...
