I've been having a think about this. I am actually more concerned that they are sending your top two pairs to the same event. It makes it more difficult for whichever ever pair places lower at Riga to get into the JGPF. I would have sent one of the current pairs (probably Descrochers and Thrasher because Kemp and Elizarov looked like they needed a bit more time on their SP) and Quattrocchi and Lacasse. I am not sure any of the others are really ready yet, so would maybe have sent Cheung and Lee just for a bit of experience.

With Pairs having 4 events, there'd be some permutation of the top teams meeting each other. In 2023-24, Ariano Kent/Laliberte-Laurent and Kemp/Elizarov were against each other at Budapest. Kemp/Elizarov and Desrochers/Thrasher were against each other at Gdansk. All three teams were able to make it to JGPF.

I think with Riga, the selections make sense in that they're the two top teams that were the most ready and could be decided on before NextGen. Quattrocchi/Lacasse hadn't competed together yet, and I wouldn't be surprised if Ariano Kent/Laliberte-Laurent were dealing with an injury given that they were doing a 2Tw at NextGen.

I do hope that Cheung/Lee get a chance, they're close to the CTES minimums, and other eligible teams too.

what @saine said :) in pairs, there is no escaping the top teams and Canada has 3 teams, perhaps even 4 (ok that's very ambitious) able to medal and make the JGPF.

So, I am not worried about these two teams competing against each other... It is not that bad.

Let's say that Yoni and Ava place first and Jazzy and Kiki 2nd...
In JGP 2

Canada could send Jazzy and Kiki and 2 lower placed teams, maximizing the chances for them to place highly.

Then in JPG 3 Yoni and Ava can be sent again with Marly.

Then, the most vulnerable team, which is Marly at this stage in the season goes to JGP4 with lower ranked teams only.

That way,. all 3 teams, if they skate well, can make it.

You can try all kinds of variations... the only ones that wouldn't work well is not sending a top team to an event or sending all three top teams to the same event.... Canada needs one or two top teams at each event to block medals from other competitors and max out on points.

The Chinese team may win both their events.. or not.. depending on how they skate and who else is competing. They are the biggest non-Canadian threat at this point. The * means that they got this score in a local/national event and who knows how they will score on the international scene. The Americans are a threat as well but they are still about 5 points behind our teams ranked 3 and 4... mind you, Marly are having a rough start at this point.

Julia and Étienne are top ten potential after their first event (also a non-official score). Considering that only a few of the top ten teams may compete at the same time, Julia and Étienne could be nearing the gap and could medal with a 140+ score.

Skate Canada has all the tools to making this happen... It's up to them to plan properly and so far, they sent the two teams that are readiest and the competition is solid at the first event but both teams have great chances to podium as China sent their lower ranked teams.

Men - Ethan Luo, Rui Qin
Women - Victoria Barakhtina, Uxia Gonzalez-Abraldes, Hannah Quinn, Camila Volkova
Pairs - Dion/Cote, Quattrocchi/Lacasse
Ice Dance - Anderson/Dawson, Kalaganis/Deveau

Briere/Levesque are the only skaters not at the competition who are included on the team.

Hmm hope it's just an oversight. Marly are not pictured.
 
I saw them there too yesterday... in the red coat... so yeah... I'd think it's just an oversight... I mean, we are talking about Skate Canada, famous for butchering skaters' names and so on :)

Hmm. The chemistry between them seemed off at Next Gen, but I was hoping that it was just that one of them (Martina I suspected) was injured. Either Skate Canada has made an admin error (seems unlikely it would have got as far as the press release), or they are out for a while, or they are splitting. 😐

I am a little bit surprised that more of the pairs weren't included. Also a bit surprised that Aleksa Volkova has been when she has not shown yet that she will be able to come back fully from her injury.

I don't think it's admin error if it's in the press release and they say it's four Pairs teams :frown:.

If they were out for a while, they could still be included. They were on the NextGen team last year when they were out for Charly's shoulder surgery.

Ankara entries are due today and it has Pairs. That should give information next week if there isn't an announcement before entries are out.
 
AT the same time, the press release could have just been made with what's on the website... so if there were a mistake, it copied down to the press release..

OK.. I know.. I am delusional.
 
I don't want it to be true, but with a bronze at Jr Worlds last season and 4th at the NextGen Competition, I can only see them not being on the team if they are done. I hope there's another explanation for this.

I agree.

And it screws up the Skate Canada pairs strategy which for once, they had done right LOL... Now they no longer need to have their top two teams compete against one another ;)

I would be curious to see if Skate Canada w/d Jazzy and Kiki and put Julia and Étienne to sub for Riga ;)
 
btw... Charly like his brother, has dual citizenship with France... I am obviously thinking ahead way too far... but yeah.. we may lose him to France if there is a split and he cannot find a suitable Canadian partner...
