2025-2026 Canadian Figure Skating

When I saw the scores at Golden spin I had the same thought as RatedPG; that our ladies and men could have placed well here. This would have added to their confidence, got them seen by international judges again, and also racked up more points for them for next season.

As far as the GPF - I just checked the results and I am in disbelief that the Brits have been pushed over Piper and Paul. Yes it was close but the fact is it shouldn't be close at all. Do you think Piper and Paul need to come up with a new Free Dance? This one is not being well received.

Going into the final we had a chance at 4 or even 5 medals. We come out with only 1. And that one was won without them doing their best. Does it come down to the age old Canadian problem of not sending our skaters out enough to get used to skating in any situation. This is a unique year. With our top skaters going to the Olympics do we have back up skaters who have competed enough to go to 4CC and do well? Look at the number of 'second tier' skaters the USA has sent out this year. They sent 3 ladies, 3 Pairs, 2 Men and 2 Dance Teams to Golden Spin.

Should have added that if they had sent SMD to Golden Spin it would have given her another chance to get a good program in with her 3A. Really like to she what she can score when she lands and 3A and gets all her other jumps in too.

I agree. We have to realize that a Year's difference from 41 to 42 is going to be noticed a lot more than a Year's difference from 31 to 32, or 21 to 22. The closer you get to your mid 40s, the quicker the decline into old age, no matter how fit you are nor how well you look after your body the reality is, Deanna just isn't going to get the same height and pop on her jumps, or be able to rely on the same muscular strength to hold on to tough landings, etc. This is not a knock on her cuz she is incredible, and as a 46 year old man, I cannot imagine being able to do similar things at 42 to what I had done when I was 20! However, we have to accept that age waits for no one, and it could be that that Deanna is just dealing with that reality. It's still possible for them to pull everything together on the right day, but pair skating has taken some significant leaps forward in the last 12 to 18 months compared to where things were at the beginning of the quad.

I agree with your first paragraph entirely. However, I think that Shaidorov's disappointment is less to do with the fact that he's getting under mark this season, and more to do with the fact that he was over marked last season and benefited from a great performance at the right time when others faltered

I was talking to my sister, an avid curling fan, the other day. Olympic curling trials just finished up, and she is confident we are sending the best teams to medal. I told her, good thing, because we probably aren't going to win any in figure skating.

Honestly, though, if I had to chose between figure skating medals for Canada, and a Winter Olympics free of figure skating controversy (for once), I would pick the later.

Alas, that’s unlikely as they will still have a skater, from the same group as the drugged 15 yr old.

Hmm, well. But that's no reason for Shaidorov to be marked down technically and unfairly assessed URs that were NOT actually URs, as he was a few times on the GP this season. That's enough to setback any skater in their confidence and training. For sure, don't overdo pcs, especially as he did not have good programs this season. But a young skater can get messed up and confused when marked down unfairly for jumps they executed well.

Part of the scandal though was the "no medal" for Canada last time... when it clearly should have won the team event Bronze.

Honestly, if Piper and Paul skate well and don't win a medal, I will call this a scandal ;)
 
Not sure why Shaidorov is a part of Canadian skating, but his federation allegedly moved him to train more in Kazakhstan. Even if it's not the factor, Shaidorov was often ill in the past and it can also be contributing this season. Every skater has ups and downs, and Gogolev's upswing in this regard has a good timing to bring it back to Canada. Same with SMD. If there is one year to bring out 3A, it's this year.

Edit: Sorry, I didn't realize my comments were in the Canadian thread, and they had nothing to do with Canadian skaters.
 
Let's not make a topic about Misha in here. It's okay to mention other skaters in passing when there was a competition... Not so much to have a full on conversation about said skaters if they are not Canadian.

Long is very much aware that his short program music is something that has been very popular with figure skaters over the years, “so if I’m going to do this, I have to do it well or they’re going to compare me to the others that have done it. But I was willing to take that risk because I really like that piece of music.”

While he’s not necessarily a fan of Demon Slayer — “the actual plot of the show is not that great” — the soundtrack itself pulled him in. The pieces of music he chose are “Upper Moon Gathering” and “Azaka Enters Infinity Castle,” by Diego Mitre.
