2025 Europeans: Thoughts

If I put aside all the sad skating related stuff that happened this week, I quite enjoyed the event.

As I mentioned in another thread, my hero is Shin Amano. Dodgy jumps were punished.

I'm not really invested in any of the women but the last 2 groups had some great performances in both short and free. Niina winning was of course a fairy tale moment. Kimmy has so much potential.

I don't really watch pairs, but I'm curious to see if the German press and public are going to acknowledge the existence of figure skating going forward.

Despite the men menning hard, there was a lot I enjoyed: The Selevko bros' shorts, Adam's short, all things Deniss, Matteo's beautiful skating, Memola's hair, Georgian Fed lady...

I'm bored of the Italians always winning in ID, but at the same time very happy the French got silver. They are unique and I love their cyberpunk FS. I would have dropped Lilah and Lewis off the podium because their programs feel stale at this point and the execution wasn't that good either. I wonder if they're going to switch it up for Olympic season or do another set of party programs.
The Finns were great and Olivia and Tim had the skate of the day. This is THE Dune program. I'm glad the judges agreed. Still salty about how the Taschlers always get shafted. No clue who thought Allison's dress was a good idea.
Tired of that too and it won’t change until after Olympics. I would have had Olivia and Tim on podium somewhere for sure. Maybe Finnish team also

Well, Finnish media has been with this competition. It was ISU's choice not to have T/V or no any other Finns on the gala. They have decided to call entertaining skaters. Finns are a bit disappointed because there were plenty of Finns on the place. Well, I don't always watch galas and this time I noticed I have seen all already, so I skipped it anyway myself.

Right now Italy looks like bronze in the team event with USA gold and Japan silver but watch out France or 'Georgia.

I would wait for WC to even start wondering what the world standings could be.
With Italy, I feel like Grassl hit a rich vein of form early in the season and even Guttmann to a degree, they likely won't repeat. They are strong in other disciplines. Pezzetta if she eliminates errors will beat everyone except Adelia.

Memola is interesting though. He is utterly captivating. I felt like he's been underscored for a long time and now that there is nothing to argue with his landings (he's got half a rotation to spare with this jumps), he's getting the marks he deserves. A really unique skater. Probably needs 4 quads to be a consistent contender though with the Japanese and the American.

I hope Italy gives Japan some competition for that silver medal. Home ground advantage may help, as will Japan finishing near the bottom of the standings in the RD. I had some concerns about Italy's women, but they are now rising to the occasion, we'll see how Worlds goes.

For fun, I started toting up the Team Event qualification points, recognizing that most of these will be overwritten by the results of Worlds (but some not, I expect Dr. Virtanen's points to stand, for example):

Was really happy to see Great Britain's team doing well at Euros! Would love to see Switzerland in the Olympic team event as well.

I think talking about Team event also belongs to Team Event pre game chat. I will answer there.

The Olympic team event thread doesn't exist... as it's in 2026. I think it's pretty normal that after a competition, people are looking ahead and trying to think how the results of this event would fit in a more global scheme of things. It will happen also after 4cc... The world team trophy thread is up if you are curious about that one though :) YMMV

The competition definitely gave me a pre-Olympic vibe and not just because of Italian skaters' host nation GOE and PCS outstanding achievement: simply we are entering the pre-Olympic year and the upcoming Games are in everybody's heads. Talking about which, IMO it's time to start respective threads about the individual and team Olympic qualification. It would be handier to check the updates on a specific thread rather than spread them across many discussions that are originally about other topics. But it's just my opinion.

There are also other vibes that make me see this EC as a milestone and a historic achievement but it rather belongs to the Baltic States thread in the Skating Nations subforum where I am posting excitedly

I can work on one for Olympic Team event qualification since it has started with the end of Europeans.
