2025 John Nicks Pairs Challenge Senior FS

What do you mean? Sure, Flores/ Wang could have remained in juniors another season. They are not the first talented pairs team with advanced elements to move on to seniors after success in juniors, despite still being age-eligible for juniors.

Absolutely, this was not a good event for F/W. They are obviously capable of performing much better. The uncharacteristic mistakes in both programs make me wonder if there's injury involved, or else some off-ice emotional factors, or possibly variant growth issues re trouble with the lifts. 🤔 I am not going to rush to sit in judgement. I wish Liv & Luke all the best. ❤️
They have withdrawn from Nebelhorn Trophy. Something is definitely off.

Gabbie Izzo is standing with him, think I heard they might be a thing now

Edit; I know nothing Jon snow
They have actually dated and formerly lived together for a while, and have seemed very close per their IG posts. I guess they are still together then, despite the LDR.

[long-distance relationship]

I really hate the love story theme though sorry that music is just 🧀
Yeah. I'm very disappointed in this fp music for the Olympic season for Alisa/ Misha. I want to like it (as Katia G worked on it), but it's too treacly, soft, and boring. They need a fp that matches the power and interest of their sp!

ETA:
I can't find a G&G Love Story performance on YouTube, but there are a number of montages of their skating with the Love Story theme on the audio track!

The LS theme was always sad and a bit slow. I'm not sure why it worked so well for Sale/ Pelletier. It's got to be Sandra Bezic's great choreo instincts at work. After all, the theme was written to express a love story between two people, one of whom is doomed to die young. 😬 Thus, why use that sad love story music for Alisa/ Misha when there are other music choices skated to by G&G that can express love in a happier and/ or more dramatic and impactful way?

There is plenty of room for all these teams to improve. Interestingly, Max and Deanna took the judges 4-3 over Alisa and Misha on this free skate. So this was pretty tight all around. Sadly, I haven't been able to find either of these top free skates, and I really want to see them.

Even though the protocols show a sloppy performance, I would at least be able to get a vibe and imagine what is possible.
I've looked at the protocols, and I don't remember such high GOEs on their lifts before. Are they considered the #1 US team now with Kam and O'Shea pulling out of events, or is this just a typical "home-event" thing?..
Alisa/ Misha's lifts are excellent. Alisa's positions are exquisite, and Misha supports her very well.

In general, this was a low-scored event, with errors. Plus, it's early season debuts. The top teams, especially, will need to be bringing up those scoring numbers in order to be competitive with other top international teams as the season progresses.

You'd think it would have been logical to find a larger podium, considering the event was only for pairs  . And is the ceiling in that rink unusually low, or is it just the grid for the lights that makes it appear that way? I used to sometimes practise in a half-size rink that looked like that one, and we never did twists or certain lifts because there wasn't safe room overhead.
The entire venue is problematic, honestly. Audio is terrible; lighting is inadequate; rink is too small for world-class figure skaters; no audience seating; apparently no locker room bathrooms for skaters; even the ice quality seems poor. 😬 As I mentioned previously, U.S. fed and Skating Club of New York, which probably hosts the event, seriously need to find a better, state-of-the-art venue posthaste!

I suppose John Nicks has been affiliated with SCONY, and that's why they hold the event at Chelsea Piers. Maybe U.S. fed doesn't care since pairs is always treated like a poor stepchild. But, they need to do better. Move it to Detroit or back to Boston (Cranberry Cup event used to host pairs early season, but stopped when this John Nicks event was created).

Good quality videos here:
Thanks much. These videos are a little better quality, in terms of a bit closer views and ability to hear the music slightly clearer. Still very poor audio, though.

I couldn't find Deanna/Max's fp on YouTube, so I'm glad to finally see it. I had expected a bit more drama performance-wise, but I like the red color costume Deanna chose, and I love her sp costume, too. The fp music is familiar and okay, but it still does not seem as exciting as what they need to make an impact vs other top teams. Albeit that the audio is so poor, it's difficult to fairly assess music choices at this venue. D&M's and other teams' jumps are a bit rusty, but I suspect D&M will improve as the season progresses. I think, in general, that music selection for skaters has been affected by complications with music rights requirements.

This was a very good event for McBeath/ Parkman. I enjoyed both of their programs. Overall, they were very close to being the cleanest team performance-wise. I believe Parkman fell on the first jumping pass in the fp due to being slanted in the air because he seemingly was trying to avoid contact with the boards. Again, a result of the small rink size. 🙄 The substack reviewer mentioned how the scores were bunched in the sp. There should already have been more distance between M/B and those teams they got bunched with in the sp scoring. I think M/B should have been scored higher in the sp (at least, 66+), and so should Alisa/ Misha (at least, 68+ to 69+). I guess the judges realized they had underrated M/B a bit in the sp, especially once they proved to be nearly as strong in the fp.

Obviously, Deanna/ Max are rated higher in terms of rep status, so that's apparently why they were scored above Alisa/ Misha in the sp. But there should not have been such a huge scoring difference, IMO. Alisa/ Misha have a very good sp that deserves better points. I recognize that Deanna/ Max have the rep status which means starting out with a low to mid 70s score in the judges' minds. I do like D&M's sp, but if they were scored 70, Alisa/ Misha deserved to be closer to that mark. Not much separated the two teams in terms of choreo and performance, though I like A&M's Cloak & Dagger sp more. Yes, Deanna/ Max have great power and height in the twist, but Alisa/ Misha also have an excellent twist delivered with ease and precision. Alisa's death spirals are more aesthetically pleasing. Plus, both teams have strong lifts, comparable spins, and were similarly error-prone on the jumps in this early season comp. Perhaps D&M's fp music choice is slightly better.

I think Alisa/ Misha need to go back to their last season's fp, which had greater impact. Or else, enlist Katia G to work with them and Renee Roca on a much stronger past G&G program. I can't recall that Katia/ Sergei ever skated to this rendition of the Love Story theme. But they certainly performed to other memorable music which might be better to use for Alisa/ Misha.

I openly admit that I am biased towards Alisa/Misha though Deanna has all my admiration she deserves. I had some misgivings about A/M’s LP. To start with I dislike tribute programs in competition format imho they belong to shows. That ‘Papa can you hear me…’ wailing of last season will stay for me forever I fear. Secondly, I don’t like the music as such and lastly I felt it would place too heavy a burden of responsibility of living up to the great champions. After seeing the program in decent quality I am totally converted and convinced it has a potential. Nothing is flashy or overdone, a story or rather a feeling being told through the beauty and delicacy of movements and lines. Some lovely details such as a little pause before Alisa takes Misha’s hand for example. There is calmness which actually says more than any dramatics would do.
You make some good points. I will wait to see if I experience their fp in a better way when I can actually hear the music, and see them perform in a up-to-date venue. Still, I prefer their sp to this fp. And I like their last season's fp much better.

Shin/Nagy needs to clean it up big time as they will be competing in the Olympics qualifier in couple of weeks but i think they should be able to get the job done easily.
Easily? Not if they make nervous mistakes, including URs and other jump errors.

Hopefully, they got the jitters out at John Nicks. While Shin/Nagy have improved overall, Audrey needs to find her confidence and pace herself.

But how could they to go back to Malade? After all the hype with the tribute to GG it would be disrespectful. The only option would be to scramble for another tribute as you suggest a remake of one of GG own programs (they never actually skated to Love Story, the reference was to the book Katia wrote. ) I thought R&J would be perfect. But we are at the start of the season, they already had redone their SP it is just impossible to expect them to do that. Let’s not be too hasty in our judgment. Yes, the music is a snooze but with beautiful elements they can make it work I blame Renee actually for this fiasco (edit perhaps too strong word) Ok, Olga, the coach, came up with this dubious idea of a tribute and music from Love Story. But then Renee could have navigated them to a better music while keeping the general idea alive? As a professional she surely could see it’s too slow, outdated, has no musical accents to time elements to, all the things we, fans, could see clearly? I don’t know…we’ll see. Maybe the song will actually appeal to a wider audience, especially the American, better than we think? It had some good choreo which probably will be added onto as it happened with Malade. I like the knee slide and the entry into it at the end very much. Believe it or not before I got to see the program I tried to imagine the choreo and I could see in my own mind a knee slide at the end! only ‘mine’ was ending with them apart from each other.

I think the knee slide idea likey came from Katia, as she and Sergei performed gorgeous ending knee slides into embraces for memorable programs.

You are most likely right that Alisa/ Misha will keep their fp and make modifications over the course of the season. Actually hearing the audio better in the substack video helps a little. This duo exhibits a strong connection with each other emotionally, despite some fans not being impressed by Misha aesthetically.
