2025 Skate Milwaukee & US Junior Cup of Skating | Jul 9-13

Here are some of my thoughts on each skater. Please note that the jumps and rotations are my calls as I'm seeing them live so make sure to check the official protocol as there are sure to be mistakes.

Allison Brooks - 3F<2T, 3Lo<2A2A (she put her foot down in between so it might be invalid), 3S2T, 3F<, 3T<, and I did not see her last jumping pass
  • She has good basics and seemed pleased with her performance but the under-rotations plagued her.
Leah Sharpe - 3Lz3T<<, 3F< (two-footed), 3S, 3Lo, 3(?)2T2Lo, 3Lz<(fall), 2A(fall)
  • She seemed happy after her performance and also out of steam. The last two jumping passes seemed to slip due to fatigue which is understandable considering how demanding it is to be trained and ready for a competition of this caliber in early July. Her jumps, when they're clean and landed, are not only gorgeous but she has a nice air position and quality.
Annabelle Wilkins - 1Lz, 3F<(fall), 3Lo<(Hanyu-esque save), 2Lz, 3T2A2A, 3T2T, and 3S(lean)
  • Really cool program with interesting use of her arms. She reminds me of Sherry with her big jumps. However, today was unfortunately not her day but she continued to perform and grit her way to the end. She never gave up any jumps.
Anabel Wallace - 3Lz2T, 3Lo, 3Lz, 2A, 2Lz2A(perhaps a q)1A, 3S<(fall), and 3S2T
  • Great way to show up after a less than stellar short. She has nice lines and a sense of musicality that matches well with the softness of her skating. Her jumps also have a lot of air time and are flowy when landed and clean. Great comeback.

I don’t think they are allowed two solo 3A in the FS, but I don’t have a rule to cite so 🤷‍♀️ My opinion is just based on my observation that no junior woman that I have watched in the last quadrennial has tried to do that; if they go for a second 3A one of them will be in combination. It would certainly be an advantage for Mao Shimada, Ami Nakai, and the Kim twins if they were allowed to do that.

As for the weird SP rule for junior women, I am pretty sure the intention was that the ISU wanted to limit the tech content of junior short programs, which is why junior men are not allowed to do quads in the SP. In other words, the ISU did not want junior women to do 3A in the SP at all, but they unintentionally left a loophole that permits 3A in combination. Maybe you know this already and were just expressing disapproval of the rule; a lot of people don’t like it, which I get. For my part, I wish they would close the loophole and either allow the 3A or ban it entirely.
 
Jiaying Elysse Johnson - 3S, 3Lz(<?)3T, 3F, 3Lo, falls on a spin, 1A2T(step out), 3Lz, 2A1Eu2S
  • Johnson is such an emotive and well-rounded skater whose skating skills and tender performance shine in this field especially. Unfortunate mistake on the fall on a spin but she laughed it off at the end of the performance. Great recovery from her really bad fall yesterday on the Loop.
Alayna Coats - 3T, 3Lz(fall), 3Lo, 3F2T, 3Lz2A2A, 3F, and 3S
  • Coats lost out on about a point and a half by not adding a 2T to the 3S but overall, it was a speedy and good performance. She has really grown in the last year, not only as a performer but also as a technician. Her first Lutz was humongous which probably resulted in the fall. She used to struggle with under-rotations and although she still gets called on her triple-triples, her jumps have improved tremendously. I cannot wait to see her improve her edge quality and skating skills in the seasons to come.
Cleo Park - 3Lz, 3F, 3S2T, 3T, 3Lo<<, 3Lz2A<2A<, and 3S2T
  • Cleo has worked really hard on her performance quality and flow across the ice. She was always a great performer but now, she has speed to back up her energy. Although she seems to have worked on the leg wrap, there are still rotation issues, especially on her Toe jumps. She slipped during her entry into her Loop yesterday and got marked for a 0Lo. Today, she defeated that demon and landed a beautiful Loop. Great effort.

Teryn Kim - 3Lz, 3Lo, 1Lz, 3T, 3T2A2A, 3F2T, and 3S<(fall)
  • Teryn is a beautifully lyrical and light skater. Overall, I enjoyed the performance and hope her season can only get better.

Emilia Nemirovsky - 3Lz3T, 3F, 3S, 3Lo, 3F2T, 3Lz1A2T<, and 2A
  • Beautiful skate from Emilia whose humongous jumps continue to amaze me. She has grown tremendously both in her consistency, spins, and overall skating quality. Cannot wait to see the 3A in her program soon.
Sophie Joline von Felten - 3A, 3S, 3A(turns)2T, 3Lo<(hangs on), 3Lz2A2A, 3Lz2T, and 3F
  • Great effort from Sophie whose ginormous triple Axels look as easy and beautiful as ever. She's also considerably improved her spins and overall presentation, especially during the choreographic sequence where she does the cantilever. She's a powerful skater and her programs are designed to showcase her strengths.
Sofia Bezkorovainaya - 3Lz, 2A3T, 3F<2T, 3Lo, 3Lz2A2T, 3F, and 3S
  • Superb skate from Sofia. Her jumps have improved so much in the last few years. Her speed, spins, and jump technique have all really leveled up and it's awesome to see her skate with such passion and jubilance. I hope we get to see her on the Junior Grand Prix series.
Jessica Jurka - 3Lz(fall), 3T2T, 3S, 3F(e?), 3Lo, 2Lz2A2A, and 3Lo2T
  • Good effort from Jessica but given how well everyone else skated, it might not be enough to podium. I am shocked because I have never seen her double the Lutz or even fall on the opening Lutz. I hope she can still manage to grab a Junior Grand Prix spot and stay in the top 6. With six strong skaters remaining, we shall see. The improvements she's made in the past two seasons are nothing to scoff at, she is an incredible athlete.
Kaya Tiernan - 2A, 3Lz3T, 3Lo, 3F(step out), 3Lz1Eu2S(fall), 3F+REP(hands down), 3S2T
  • Kaya was a novice, like many skaters in the previous groups, last year and she has grown tremendously. Her 3Lz3T looked beautiful and her other jumps were solid. I cannot wait to see her growth.

I'm not watching live, but I've been following along, and I'm thrilled to see Sherry put up a huge score for this early in the season. Quality-wise, she's in a class of her own here, and I've been waiting for her to have her big moment for a few seasons now...I can't wait for her return to the JGP :jumping:

She really didn't have much choice when planning her season. She's not Senior-eligible internationally and no longer Junior-eligible at National Qualifiers, so that's what she'll have to skate as.
 
Seeing the final results, I'm amazed by how much more competitive this event is this year than it was last year, at least scoring-wise. Great season to have a full roster of JGP spots back ;) I'm anxious to see all of these programs (with sound!) on the JGP!
 
What an amazing competition.
The top six junior ladies that were in the top six were really fantastic.
All six scored over 170. USA is really closing the gap with Japan in terms of their depth with their Women and Girls.

Congrats to Sherry for what might be her biggest victory.
Sophie - What a fighter
Angela - I’m assuming she is eligible for the JGP circuit. She keeps getting better. I remember her as the second best American novice skater behind Skylar and now she shone.

Sofia - 👏
Emília - I hope you did enough to guarantee yourself two spots.
Annika - She is a fixture in the JGP

Will USA give two spots to the above six ladies? Then, maybe one spot to Logan and to another junior lady that performs well at a domestic event?
 
Me too! I’m delighted to see my top two in the top two. Also happy to see Sofia work her way up to the JGP (new PB?), and Emilia likely earning an assignment or two. Congrats to newcomer Angela Shao placing 3rd in both programs, very impressive. I’m dying to see all these programs with music.
