I too am interested who will qualify spots for the Olympics. With all the ineligible American skaters/teams I am not so sure the third spot is such a big deal ? other than they get to send another team. I am a little confused about Sui and Han not being here. CAn they still go to the olympics as long as teh Chinese representative qualifies for a spot. This seems "unfair" if they earn the spot but Sui and Han go tot he olympics but that's life I guess. Maybe I haven't heard the update about Sui and Han and his constant injuries. Are they not coming back?

Aside from the AIN athletes who are competing for themselves, the rest are competing for a spot for their country. So if Z/H manages to grab a spot, it is still up to the Chinese federation who will they send to the olympics.

Okay thanks. I kind of feel sorry then for the Chinese pairs team as they will probably get passsed over for Sui and Han. SH return seems to be strongly motivated / created by the Federation. I feel for the team that earns the spot but really it is fro Sui and Han to try to get China a medal. But life isn't fair. Now has anyone seen Sui and Han and what programs they are doing. The Italians look really good so far. Canada didn't look too good in their first event. Sui and Han would probably do very well at the olympics.

It sucks for Z/H but they are not entirely unique in this situation. The skaters for USA and Austria are in the same boat as they are not guaranteed of going to the olympics even if they are able to win a spot here for their country.

Prior to this, the idea of S/H going to the qualifiers started because frankly none of the other Chinese pairs have a high chance of medaling. It is understandable that a federation will want to send their best skaters/teams who has the best shot of medaling and grabbing a spot for the olymypics. On paper S/H is a no brainer choice but ofcourse they have to actually show a competitive program and no one has seen that yet.

Lets be honest Z/H is more of a long project but they have since shown tremendous progress and respectable scores that is why you can even sense that the Chinese Fed is now going all out on them.

Sure S/H is the preferred choice on paper but they have to actually beat Z/H first which they haven't done that is why Z/H is the one going to compete for China.

The US team, yes - Though I wonder if that wasn't one of the reasons why Shin/Nagy are being sent here, as the US only has four realistic options for the Olympics and only two were really options for this event (Kam/O'Shea already earned one of the Olympic spots and Liu/Bedard had not competed yet), so to say "making them earn their own ticket".

The Austrians, on the other hand, actually have nothing to worry about on that front, as the other team has citizenship issues. With the Austrian fed, we actually know that the Olympic eligibility was the main deciding factor for who to send here, as Izzo/Maierhofer outscored Schaller/Mayr by quite a bit at John Nicks.

Let's wait for S/H to actually return first. Cong retired because of pretty serious injuries, they've been out of competition for a long time and we don't know when Cong even started training again.

Zhang/Huang might not be medal contenders quite yet, but they are a very good team with two great programs for this season.
I particularly love their Free program (some of the music has been removed due to copyright), so many ingenious choreographic touches (transitions!):

Helloooo 🙂 am here but still have a bit of work to do. Last day of work for me before I have my Nebelhorn vacation next week 😁

We're back! And again, it's a competition where I have two sets of kids. :drama:

And there is even more drama because, even with the possibility of an extra slot opening up, there are fewer slots up for grabs than I thought when I was making out my predictions.

Livestream for the Pairs FS is now on air.

:cheer: ALL THE BEST EVERYBODY!!! :cheer:

Didn't get back until the start of the Warm-Up. So misssed the introductions.

I am worried for Shin/Nagy. I am concerned about the hate they are likely to get in the US if they don't qualify a spot.

That's one of the reasons I wish the Olympics were done like Worlds. It's not just so that more athletes get to compete in it. It's so that we don't have the situation where the media and ultra-nationalistic fans are laying into athletes because they don't make it to the Olympics.

They are doing the best they can on the day. They don't deserve to be treated like they are failures.
