I'm switching to tea cause I need to calm down for the final group...Armed with Coffee. Will I need something stronger?
Since I love trivia and geography, I'm really enjoying learning all this. LOL I always wondered why the difference in pronunciation but figured it was just English just not making sense - or crazy US naming traditions. One that made me chuckle was when I first moved to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania where I used to live is when I pronounced one of the towns up north of Pittsburgh called North Versailles - as North "Ver-Sigh," like the palace. The person scoffed at me and said a bit smugly "It's pronounced 'Ver-Sails'."Are you gonna make me look up Kansas too?
Kansas is named after the Kansas River, in turn named after the Kansa people.
The name Kansas derives from the Algonquian term, Akansa, for the Quapaw people. These were a Dhegiha Siouan-speaking people who settled in Arkansas around the 13th century. The stem -kansa is named after the Kaw people, also known as the Kansa, a federally recognized Native American tribe.
