2025 World Team Trophy: Info and pre-game chat

As per the announcement, Inori (the Medalist's main character), or rather the actress Natsumi Haruse, will host the opening ceremony :)
There will also be a thematic photo booth at the venue where people can pose and take shots if they like.
They also mention distribution of "gold medal style cards" among the audience.
I also expect the anime's opening song "Bow and Arrrow" will be played a lot at the venue. It's a big hit in Japan right now, both the song itself (by Japanese superstar Kenshi Yonezu), and the music video clip (featuring Yuzuru Hanyu skating to it, yes, no less!) topping the charts.
This anime is focused on skating and hugely popular now in Japan, both in terms of views on D+ and social media engagement / comments. So is the manga. Hence the buzz :)

This looks like a better idea from the Japanese Federation, than what I've seen lately from ISU... It's probably not very expensive (not needing costly special stage devices etc), not long term, but able to do a buzz and generate positive associations as most advertising try to do; this, while World Team Trophy as an event, may well be threatened by the chronic loss of revenue at JSF.

TBH I am not sure it comes from JSF. If I were to guess, I would point to TV Asahi who is a special sponsor of the event, which I understand as saying they will broadcast it for Japan This is too media savvy either for ISU or for JSF, lol
The announcement comes from TV Asahi's website so..... :)

The 2024 World Team Trophy event is almost here. This competition generally marks the end of the competitive skating season. It needs to be clear this format is very different than the Olympic team event. Mainly it seems designed for Japan with two singles skaters in men and women unlike the Olympic event which has one only. This obviously famours countries known for singles skating ie Japan.

I believe we have six teams - USA, Japan, France, Italy, Georgia and Canada. There is a prediction thread but it woudl be interesting to talk about the teams.

USA and Japan look like the strongest with the US being strong in all four events with the weakest being probably pairs. It will be interesting to see who represents each nation. For example the current ladies world champion is not even in the top 3 in her country to represent them.

Canada named its team and it is eveident they are hurting in the singles department for both men and women. On the otherhand US and Japan are full of talented singles skaters. THe top two spots in my mind are made up USA and Japan. Who gets bronze. I am thinking Italy. But a lot will depend in the battle of the men Italy versus France they both have top male skaters at least 2 each.

Team Challenge Cup was a different event... :)

Whatever it is, WTT or TCC, the fluff is real. The skating can be real too. One doesn't prevent the other.
Its is????
Actually, both events have their charms....the skating order in Spokane was...unusual....but it was fun....if a certain Swiss coach/skater/promoter hadnt stolen Yuzu from us, the place would have been packed with wonderful Japanese fans....
Sometimes, our local branch of Mukogawa University shows up in force and sits together...lots of fun.

The men will be interesting. Mind you with a lot less skaters a Aymoz or Fa or one of the Italian boys crashing and burning is less likely. You just don't know which Italian or French guy is going to show up. Jason Brown will be affected a lot by those 4 skaters. This does seem to be a made for Japan kind of event.

We certainly do. Some events, even ISU certified events are fluffier than others. TCC and WTT, or the famous Mordavian ornament.
While there were events this season that maybe in the grand scheme of things were not that important, I would not have called them fluff. They were run seriously. Fluff is found in events where skaters cheering each other on dress up in costumes or funny glasses and sit in funny boxes and just have fun. If your team maybe does not do its best ....you are out some bucks...but you still have fun. Just like the old pro championships of the last century.

I've forgotten how the scoring works here.

Is it ordinal based like the Olympic Team Event? So many points for first, less for second, etc?

Or is it score based? Add up all the scores?

Scoring is based on skater placements for each event. Win by .50, win by 30, the team gets the same score.

Won’t stop Ilia from going for all the quads, because that’s how he rolls ;) but he doesn’t “need” to.

Just realized I will be at work for the entire first and second day. Sorry but I will miss chatting with you folks.

Which short program will Kevin skate to? Last years short or this years. I like both. But I predict he will skate to this years "Everybody". What do you think?
