2026-27 Canadian Figure Skating

I’m fascinated with what layout she will execute in the free skate. With one less combo, I’m interested in finding out what technical layout works best for success in the ladies field. The 3A may be too risky. But, also, if she lands it, it can make her standout for Skate Canada. She is our 4th best Canadian Junior behind Lia, Victoria and Lulu if you look at the Next Gen list
I really love how our Canadian Junior Girls are pushing one another. At the high performance camp, they saw Lia going for triple axel attempts and so Reese decided to try it and learned the jump quite quickly. I also heard there was another girl attempting the 3A. This is what happens when athletes push themselves by watching what others can do. I also heard Victoria B. is trying to learn the 4T. Apparently, she is practicing this jump on a harness.
I cannot wait for NextGen. I’m hoping the entry list comes out soon…. I’m wondering what Minsol will do. It won’t be a good JGP season for her with the lutz as the solo jump. So, should she try juniors for one or two JGP events or move to Seniors to fight for the Skate Canada spot and maybe a Challenger event.

I knew there would be an impact with Sara-Maude landing the 3A as the first Canadian woman to do so in competition. I didn't expect it to be so fast.
The new rules are good for skaters who may not have felt comfortable repeating lutz and flip. Now, they don't have to do so. They can pick their best jump and that's it.
Example of layout for Sara-Maude now.
3A, 3lz-2t-2loop, 2a-3t, 3t or 3lz, 3salchow, 3loop No need for flip.
I think Minsol is doing seniors, if I read the Brodie article properly.

SMD’s layout will be interesting too.
Also, just to add. Gabby has mentioned how much she hates the loop. So, maybe, she will take out that jump in her layout.
Lia Cho’s issue is rotation. Her 3A isn’t as high as Reese’s 3A. Hopefully, she will gain more power for this jump.
Also, I heard GoGo might attempt to add a 4Lo to his free skate layout

Good scores for our junior men so early in the season! Colton is a bit slow through the jumps but looks to have improved from last season. Rui has made a strong case for NextGen - he still looks a bit rusty on the spins but he is a strong and compelling skater. Both should be very happy.
Both Davids are looking good in the short and Reese is looking great! I am guessing she intends to skate junior this year. Great score for everybody as well.
The new pairs team Oreshkin/Furman has some nice elements - still looks a bit raw (very early days) but the s-b-s double axels were really lovely.
Lots to be happy about in late June.

Her attempted flip toe stopped with the flip.
She again doubled the lutz. Which, won’t do her any favours for selection for a JGP event.
Her edge jumps are clearly better than her pick jumps. Her 3Lo and 3S 2A 2A are good.
Based on her technical content, she attempted two flips and two toes.
Her overall score of 157 puts her slightly behind Uliana in domestic SB this season

I really hope she has a strong performance at the NextGen event and can get a JGP. These girls need international experience and you can tell how much stronger they perform once they've received more assignments. Confidence goes a long way. The potential and talent is definitely there though!Reese won the free skate.

Reese seems to be a skater who is slow mastering her FS so I am not worried this early in the season. I will wait for the video to see how everything else looks.
David B - just watched the FS video. He fell really hard on a triple lutz - very slow to get up and then you could see on his face he was going to nail the sequence next. Kudos to him.
David S is a wonderful skater. He popped his Triple axel attempt but almost everything else was really lovely. His pairs partner (Emily Chaikin I am assuming based on previous posts) doesn't appear to be a strong jumper looking at the protocols. Her triple salchow and triple toe loop were both downgraded in the FS and her PCS was not great. I hope things work out for them as a team and that skate is not typical for her.

Women do have 4 spots (Xi'an, Bangkok, Ankara and Gdansk) like they are supposed to. The Men are currently showing 4 spots when it should be six, I think they copied/pasted wrong.

They currently have Maddie at three Grand Prix assignments on the International Assignments page, so definitely not the last

Interim entry list is out for Skate Ontario Sectional Series August 14-16. Some notables - Minsol, Megan Woodley, Breken, Reese - women's senior; John Kim, David S, David B and Wesley Chiu for men's senior; for dance, lots of senior teams - Urban/Beaumont & Bashynska/Perron are still together so that is good. Pairs - we have our world podium junior teams now senior and Laiu / Haubrich are still together. Should be a good competition all round.

So far I can't find anything on their website about streaming, free or otherwise. Might be early but I would have expected something by now. See what happens

Sometimes I find myself disappointed that Victoria Barakhtina wasn't able to compete at the World Junior Championships. I’m sure that if she had been able to go, we would have secured more spots for our Canadian girls.Darn!!

Minsol needs to just move up to Senior internationally she's already been on the podium at Canadian Nats in Seniors and is going to be a threat to win Nationals next year. Why stick her on the JGP when she's going to at some point pass up the top Canadian ladies and might actually get a 2nd spot for Canada sooner rather then later. As it is she's top 4 in Canada already and has lots of room to improve which you can't say about Maddie or Gabby and she has more potential then Sara-Maude or Kaiya.
Minsol did an interview last year where she said that she wanted to do JGP this season. She hasn't competed outside of Canada for over 2 years and wants to gain more experience of international competitions before doing senior ones. Whether she will get that wish, given that there are only 4 JGP spots, is a different question.
I expect 2 spots to go to Lia, one to Viktoria, and one to whoever else does best at Next Gen.
