2026-27 Canadian Figure Skating

I went to dig it for you all

Minsol Kwon opened plenty of eyes when she skated her way to a senior bronze medal in her debut at Canadian nationals in Gatineau. Now the 17-year-old South Korean import is about to be unleashed on the rest of the world with a red maple leaf on her back.

Skate Canada has confirmed that Kwon is now fully eligible to represent this country internationally in the 2026-27 season. The question now becomes: where will we see her? Kwon herself had mentioned in Gatineau that she liked the idea of competing for Canada on the Junior Grand Prix, but it might not end up that way.

“I’m not sure where she’s going yet. We haven’t had any of those discussions yet,” said Slipchuk. “The Junior Grand Prix has minimal assignments (and that prodigy Lia Cho is very much in that picture).”

Meaning it’s likely, he added, that any international competition this season “would be as a senior, but no decisions have been made yet.”

love that Minsol is skating for Canada now but also think it is a little early to put high hopes in her. She has some big faults, (edge calls in both her short and free, a 'q' and an under-rotation in her free) that even were called at Nationals. Can only imagine how these errors will be marked internationally. And once a skater gets labeled as having these issues the callers really look for them, esp our CAN ladies. Look at Kaiya. She was seen as the next one, esp when she won Nationals but ever since has been plagued with hard calls.

Wrt edge calls and under rotations, Cdn judges haven't let Minsol off the hook in the past. She did improve through last season - at least on the under rotations if I remember correctly. So fingers crossed she and her coaches have addressed those issues. I would also love to see her project more to the audience.

She is scheduled to compete at the August Ontario Sectionals (14th-16th at RIM park in Waterloo) and so I am thinking she won't be competing the week before at Cranberry (although not a given). If she has been told she will get a JGP assignment, I would expect she would be competing her junior programmes at RIM instead of senior - so I put my money on senior this year.

I wonder when the entry list for NextGen will be released?? We are almost ten days away from the competition. I imagine the list will come up at least one week prior to the competition. So, I’ve marked July 9th to check Skate Canada website. Chances are @saine will post the entry list before that date, if the list comes out prior to July 9th 😛

The entry list will answer many questions I’m dying to know such as confirmation that Minsol will do Seniors, will David S. 😍 be there with Emily to do Junior Pairs? New Pairs (did dumped partners like Beau and Julia find new partners?) and possible New Dance teams?

I check every day... nothing

Robert Brodie interviews Reese Rose:

She'll be at Cranberry Cup and is hoping for a Challenger assignment to get a Senior score.
Ted Barton must love her name. Not many ways it can be messed up :confused2:

Imagine if Reese Rose is a top Canadian ladies in the future with her triple axel and that the crowd especially in Japan show this when she skate !

National Team has been announced:
I thought they would give us a bit more than that : wouldn't the skaters who get Skate Canada be included later on ? I thought they may do it right away

And ladies and gentlemen : Skate Canada sees women as the deepest field in Canadian skating right now ;)

I had hoped for some additions in the pairs and ID because of the splits and new couples, but I guess only Bakerie is considered strong enough for now (says someone who has no idea how the NT is determined).
