2026 Canadian Nationals : Men's Short Program

Dailymotion keeps their replay streams up don't they? I want to catch up on Synchro later.
Yes, I'm updating with the archives in this post :)

I don't think there is much inflation here... honestly... If you want to see inflation, go check out the nationals across the border.

John Kim got sixes in PCS... etc... Even Stephen didn't even reach 8.5 for that performance.
We've been as guilty of it as the anyone historically (well, other than the fed that may not be named), especially egregiously when it comes to potential medalists.

I think we are slightly more reasonable, at least with PCS. Just have a look at the short program for men from down south this year. :) Canadian inflation is so low in comparison that the Bank of Canada will have to lower its benchmark interest rate.

I'm really proud of Gogolev. I felt like he was sort of written off a couple of seasons, and it must take great fortitude to stay on the path with so many nay-sayers.

I'm sorry, but not shocked, at Roman's skate.

I know Canadian singles is in a rough patch right now, but an encouraging note.... I think there were as many clean(ish) quads in the short program as there were at US Nationals.

Other than Ilia how many clean quads over there ? Tomoki's ? Just curious.

We had John, Gogo (twice) Roman, Aleksa, Wesley (do we count Keegan's ? I wouldn't call that clean) so that's 6 clean quads, one iffy quad combo (Keegan). one fall on a quad provided by my son (Eddy)

ETA : Roman and Keegan's were called q.

Going from memory. Daniel Martnov landed a clean 4T, Tomoki was a 4Tq, Max and Lucius had poor quality (-GOE) quads, and Andrew fell on his.

So, 1 truly good quad other than Ilia.

Disappointed for Roman but honestly, what he did today is what I am afraid he would do at the Olympics- as he has done before. Stephen has put in the work and he reaped the rewards today. So pleased for Wesley, John and Mathew
This is about where I am with Roman too. We've seen this movie, he's 26 now, and had his chances.

It's time to roll the dice and give others their chance

He is very hit or miss but between Nebelhorn and this past SP, he seems to be peaking. His jumps are looking more controlled and he's actually performing instead of just going through the motions. That SP with normal judging would still score about 94-95 which to be honest, for any Canadian man that's a blessing.

Also Sadovsky's one quad isn't gonna cut it so while Gogolev might be mercurial, at least the potential to slay is there.

Yeah, kudos to Chiu, Kim, Newnham, Bondar and Rakic too. Lots of strong SPs in the field. Sad for Keegan, but he still wasn't too bad, and can make up ground in the long.

Well, unless he completely falls apart in the long, I think that Olympic spot belongs to Gogolev.

I was pretty impressed by how well he performed that program. This choreography is really clever to show off his strengths.

He's also been so consistent this year.

And I thought the judges should have given him the 100.

Haven't managed to see everyone yet, including Roman, but a couple thoughts on who I did see.

I was pleasantly surprised to see Wesley Chiu lay it down here.

Too bad about the technical errors, but I loved Anthony Paradis's program — so original. He's such an oddball, in the best way. Always refreshing.

Caught the other top two that I'd missed.

Still find Aleksa Rakic totally forgettable. I already can't remember his program.

I was impressed that Roman is fighting now. He didn't give up. But Gogolev looks like the safer bet. I actually now feel bad we don't have two spots.

I watched the last two groups and was really impressed by several. men. But, I really was waiting for Stephen. I've waited and watched for so long hoping he would fire on all cylinders. He's done it this year but especially today. He's only 19. It's like he's been around forever. Glad to see Wesley come back and fulfill his potential. Can't wait for the FS.
