2026 Four Continents Championships Practice Reports

We were able to check out two of the women's singles groups this morning in the practice venue. The main arena is absolutely gigantic.

Team USA and Team Canada looked strong. Other skaters featured in both groups were from Mexico, India, Chinese Taipei, New Zealand, and South Africa.

Bradie Tennell, Gabby Daleman, Tara Prasad and Petra Lahti were all business.

Sarah Everhardt was experiencing some frustration with the triple lutz / triple toe loop combination, while Sarah Maude Dupuis seems to have upped the triple toe / triple toe in the short to a triple flip / triple toe. We didn't see her attempt any triple axels for the remainder of her practice session.

We'll likely settle into the media tribute and watch the Ice Dancers practice shortly as well.

More to come.

We're settling in to watch the first group of ice dancers run through their routines. Team USA, Team AUS and Team BRA are sharing the ice.

It seems quite appropriate that the final championship to host an event in the countdown to Milano was the official venue for the last Olympic Winter Games.

All five teams looked strong and all business. We have lost count the number of times in the past week we've heard dancers skate to "I'm Too Sexy" by Right Said Fred, though. Much as we like that piece of music!

Wow, I wonder what figure skating practice sessions 1000 years in the future would be like...rocket-powered skates? Divisions featuring intergalactic aliens? I'm just hoping that the music used won't be completely AI-generated by then...
For some reason we are reminded of Robin Cousins being interviewed last week in Sheffield about the current men competing on the European and World stage, and he said that 46 years ago what jumps the athletes are doing now weren't even a consideration.

Interesting move by Sara. Her triple flip is about her worst triple, with very little speed and height, and it's regularly under rotated. I would not have thought that would be her choice for a triple triple.

Both Chinese Teams looked excellent in the pairs practice, with Sui and Han working on the sbs triple, the spilit twist and the throw mostly outside their run through. I think their biggest threat comes from Nagaoka and Moriguchi from Japan. They were absolutely rock solid on every element today.

That being said, Sui and Han have the most elaborately choreographed routine of the eleven teams competing. At times, it feels like they are dancers out there. The connection they share with the music and each other is such a treat to watch in person.

We scooted over to the practice rink to watch our Australian Man, Douglas Gerber, complete an excellent Short Program run-through.

Now we're back in the main arena, and Sara-Maude Dupuis performed an excellent free skating run-through, including a killer triple axel. Wow. It was quite something. to see in person. That jump was huge, and covered a lot of distance, too.

AI-generated music is being used in the ballroom world now, not much but occasionally for some of the Latin dances. Long heated-argument thread about that on the ballroom forums this month, and worries about dodging music rights for competitions that way.

I don't think I have seen any of Team China's three women before. They were all popping off the triple jumps with relative ease today.

Japan's Ami Nakai skated her short program run through complete with a triple axel and triple lutz / triple toe. Yuna Aoki is easily the artist of the event. She skates really big and extends herself with every move. Her triple lutz / triple loop is truly something to see in person.

Mona Chiba struggled a little in her free skating run through, popping the triple flip/triple toe into a single, and falling on a triple toe tacked onto the end of the solo triple lutz. To her credit, she didn't back down from anything, and landed the jumps cleanly following her run through.

Chiba also gets such flow and distance on her double axel, too. It is a stunningly beautiful jump.

Sorry @dorispulaski but I can't help giggling at the title... Skating In A Future Far Far Away....

Sorry a bit OT but I don't get the far future jokes here - was there a typo in the title of the thread? Like 3026 or something but it got corrected now? 😅
