2026 Olympic Team Event Qualification

What I find interesting is that, so far, only USA, Canada and Italy have qualified for all disciplines (at this point, pending ISU Qualifying Competition in September).

With an Additional Athletes Quota of only five skaters, I wonder how those get divvied up if more than that are required to round out the teams in the Team Event.

"Preference is given to the best-ranked incomplete teams" according to the ranking of the Figure Skating Team qualification list", according to the IOC Olympic qualification document.

I think the Japanese Dance team have a decent chance at qualifying and I expect Gubs to get it done as well in Beijing. (just pretend you're in Berlin and not Beijing and it's Europeans; guaranteed lights out performance). Will be tough for the Kovalevs to qualify so they'll probably get first dibs followed by Ed Appleby if he doesn't qualify (which will be tough for him also). Can't really factor in the Koreans if they don't have an eligible team I guess.

Seeing as the fall qualifying competition is in Beijing, I can see that helping China's chances with pairs and women. Maybe a man for Germany, a man and a dance team for Hungary, a man and a dance team for Israel?

Is Russia competing for individual spots as well? Because things get even tighter in that event.

ROC or whatever the name they will get, Independent athletes or what not, should be competing there. The choice of location was made to help in their possibility to travel there.

I would think that easily one spot in each discipline will be taken right away.
Chinese pairs and women should qualify too.
At this point, the tricky competitions seem to be pairs and women, pairs because of the few spots and because China and ROC should take it along with a third american team... women because again, China and Roc are strong but also because Loena should take one too... I don't know if Estonia will have another skater ready for the fall, and of course Gubanova should make it.

This is going to be a great event with Petrosian, Gubanova and Hendrickx. A mini Europeans. The best pair team on Earth in M/G. Presumably Morisi in the men's will try to qualify.

I wish the ISU would hurry up and finalise it along with all the Challenger events. They released all that information for this season in March last year.
The ROC athletes will not participate in the team event.

This is not a thread about the olympic quota qualifying event but the team event. Hendricks and Petrosian will not compete at the team event.

I am hoping Korean pair and Polish dance will happen. Also, Kazakhstan! PAIR! You can do it!

What surprises me is how far down Israel is. Heh, Gneish/Chigirev and Litvintzev... wouldda shouldda couldda...

The Team Event, love it or hate it, is preceded by much discourse (and frantic calculations) by the avid figure skating fans. This post is me gathering the relevant info and my thoughts into one place for reference, so bear with me.:yes2:

As we know, officially no NOC is yet Qualified for the Team Event. This qualification of the Teams are based on the results of the GP 2025 and GDF 2025(if needed, the JGP 2025 and the JGPF 2025), WC 2025(if needed, the JWC 2025). At the end of the GPF 2025 the points are added together to get the 10 qualifying Teams.

So far, 10 NOCs are in the running for the Team Event based on the number of berths they qualified for in the individual disciplines.

  • up to 5 skater/couple(upon re-reading the doc it is clearly stated) spots are available to fill the berths on incomplete Teams
  • priority for ITA, as Host, but not needed :dance2:
  • preference is given to the higher-ranked incomplete Team until all additional spots are used up/or all Teams are filled

I hope to gather the names of probable entries soon, and there is always guessing which Team will use the 2 possible substitutions allowed in the Event.

There have been very spirited discussions on different forums as to the primary reason for the establishment of the Team Event, but one of the official reasons given by ISU is to promote the development of all 4 Olympic Disciplines within a nation- We are slowly starting to see this happening

This is one of the best explanations I've read of how the Teams are put together - thank you!

It certainly worked for Japan who now have a team silver medal.

It seems more likely than not that the French pair team will get a spot given the situation with the Uzbekistan team. Additionally, South Korea does not have an eligible pair team. So, the five available spots for skaters should be enough to give the Japanese and Polish dance teams berths and allow Britain to bring a men's skater. Thus, every country will likely have a full team except for Korea. Good news for the team event!

* The Uzbek pair split; French Team 1 is the first alternate, probably the Kovalevs
?Poland has not yet announced its team

" · There were a total of five additional athlete quota places available for teams that have qualified in three disciplines to complete their team, attributed in the order of ranking
· Japan gets an Ice Dance team (two athletes), France can take a Pair Skating couple (two athletes) and Great Britain can add a man (one athlete)
· These additional athletes can only compete in the Team Event
· If unused quota places are returned and/or Japan, France or Great Britain do not use the additional athlete spot, first Korea, then Poland get a chance to fill up their team"

Japan will likely pick Utana Yoshida & Masaya Morita in dance
Great Britain will likely pick Edward Appleby in men's
Since Uzbekistan's pair team, which qualified for the non-team event Olympics has split, it is likely Uzbekistan will not fill that slot. France is the first alternate for that spot, and will likely fill it with the Kovalev's, and will.have no longer have a Team event spot that needs filling. Since Korea has no pair team, Poland will get to fill up their team.
Poland will likely pick Sofiia Dovhal / Wiktor Kulesza, for dance, if it comes to that

A friend asked the Kovalevs and Dovhal/Kulesza if they already know more about the team event and they have no idea what is going to happen, which is a shame, really. So Uzbekistan has apparently not communicated what will happen to their pairs spot.

Its clearly stated its 5 additional athletes/teams so not just 5 people, but a pairs or dance team counts as one entry.

No. It is clearly stated in ISU document for 2026 Olympics that a dance team counts as two athletes and a pair counts as two athletes.

See ISU Communication No. 2754's footnotes a* (at bottom of page 1) and b* (at top of page 2):

This ISU Communication implies Five Athletes not 5 team spots. This may be related to available rooms for athletes?
