Enjoy hearing Tracy Wilson on NBC commentate on ice dance. Her knowledge and experience as a coach shows. The scores between the Canadians and Brits are so close. Wilson fairly comments on the strengths and weaknesses of both.

Watching the replay with the call from Johnny and Tracy Wilson, because that’s the only Peacock option right now. Endless discussion of the fact that Chock & Bates are married—without any reference to the fact that Davis & Smolkin are also married, or that Guignard & Fabbri are a long time off-ice couple.
And really, does it matter? Would you know Chock & Bates are a couple, just by watching them skate?

ETA: With a shout out to JD Vance in the audience. Oh dear

I quitted watching ID about 8 years ago. Hesitated should I watch today, then read last 3 pages here and came to a conclusion that I won't watch for another 8 years! Sorry that is all I wanted to say.
Off to watch women SP... at least there scoring occasionally makes some sense.

Maybe I was in a grumpy mood, but I wasn't really impressed by most skates. Piper and Paul were the best for me. I continue to be mystified by Chock/Bates record scores.

The camerawork for this event was just awful, it's ice dance, I want to see the feet of the skaters of all times, not watch only the top half of the skaters randomly for 10 seconds followed by a long distance shot from the rafters in which you can barely see what's going on. It was particularly bad during the Marco and Charlene's skate where at some point they only showed their backs when they were near the boards during their choreo sequence.

Fournier Beaudry / Cizeron

Extremely impressive. Huge ice coverage on the twizzles, deep edges, and continuous speed. Very cohesive as a unit. She’s not as naturally expressive as Madison, so presentation isn’t quite at that level, but in pure skating quality and blades-on-ice they’re far ahead.

Gilles / Poirier

Skated this well overall. Not my favourite program, but excellent use of the full Olympic surface and some subtle choreographic improvements. Paul still feels too stiff for this style, and Piper had a few posture breaks and less upper-body refinement than Madison. Still, their skating skills are clearly superior to the Americans.

Chock / Bates

Compared to the French, their twizzles covered very little ice and the overall speed looked noticeably slower. Strong dance character and expressiveness, but the blades-on-ice quality doesn’t match the French or Canadians. I don’t see how this was six points ahead of Gilles/Poirier.

Fear / Gibson

Skating skills were clearly weaker. There were moments where performance dropped while navigating difficult choreography, especially in the twizzles. She appeared to struggle to match his speed at times, and some transitions looked rushed or clumsy, particularly when skating toward the judges. Less sustained hold and flow than usual. Well they are not my favorite, I have appreciated their programs throughout the season, but I felt this was not the strongest program.

I think I would have had the French, followed by Canada, followed by the Americans, then the British.

I'm interested in what she said? I've always found her fair, but I don't have access to her commentary this year. What did she say were their relatives strengths and weaknesses?

Piper and Paul and Marco and Charlene were underscored, but are we surprised at all? :( Particular Piper and Paul I would have had them in 3rd place.

Yes Bock are overscored but at least they are ahead of the French team.
But the French team are so clearly superior to the Americans. The Americans should not be ahead of them in any area except presentation aspect. Basic skating skills it's not even close... the only team with skating skills close to the French are the Canadians, because, blades on ice, they are fantastic. Americans are crawling across the ice today :-( I have liked programs of theirs in the past but this was very much more flash than substance...

Lilah literally was hopping during that 2nd twizzle. I’m not feeling the energy of the character from them and they appear slow.
Yes! Thank you for pointing that out! Twizzles are not just about whether the two skaters seem to be rotating in unison. It has to be a twizzle on the ice, not hops or loops. It's blade contact with the ice, not whether upper bodies are in unison, that is the main factor.

Got through the Peacock replay. Unfortunately, Peacock didn't post the world feed...didn't even get to see the Japanese score.
Chinese: music is cool. For some reason, rhythmic gymnastics has much more variety of music than figure skating, so nice to hear Chinese music. Skating was meh.
Poles: so happy for them! They made the most of their opportunity.
Japanese: I think they had a great performance! Bringing Olympic energy.
French: Wow, NBC commentator (not sure who) dumped all the tea before their performance--what an introduction to the American audience! Guess they did not decide to be as diplomatic as Canada, maybe their way of showing support to Gabi even though they had to drop her? Anyway, skating skills are always good, the costume is a choice, and the Ukraine rhythmic gymnastic team's version of Vogue that they had a few years ago blows all the figure skating versions out the water. That was my Vogue to end all Vogues, can't get into this one.
Canadians: The program itself is a travesty, but I love love their skating. For some reason, seems to me like Piper and Paul had trouble matching performance energy today, though that is normally not a problem for them. They really showcase the partnership aspect of ice dancing. It makes me pay attention to the skating and the technique of partnering, but in a positive way. I guess the scoring discourages that, but I think it is a bonus.
Italians: I like their energy and their packaging, though many people don't. Those twizzles... Agree with Tracy that they had trouble relaxing into the knees, but I can't blame them with all the home ice pressure.
Americans: Not sure why they skated before the Brits. Anyway, I like the new costumes. Was surprised that they were scored ahead of the French. I did not think they would win OGM, but, seeing this scoring, I think they will.
Brits: Honestly not much to say. It was fine, but I would have put them behind the Canadians.

An arena with people cheering! Hooray! Olys are really here. 3 am. I thought I was hallucinating. Nice energy from the Polish team!!!
I am watching peacock replay...lots of empty seats? Also, Venue feed has gone away...no commericals but there is J and T.

Thank you. I thought I was in the twightlight zone. Venue feed disappears after event concludes...terrible coverage....no Japanese scores???? Just J and T yaking? At least there is no commercials....have to be sure to watch live skating tomorrow. Peacock replay is a disaster.

I am getting two minute commercials between every skate! Can't fast forward through them either.

Sadly, I agree with you. At one event, I was listening to a dance technical type on an earbug channel describe in real time what was actually happening in ice dance scoring....they have to divide up the work load....for instance, one person acutally does nothing but run a stop watch. I stopped listening after that and just enjoyed the performances.

I was hearing Belinda on Peacock. Yes empty seats, but anything is better than that horrible, dead environment in Beijing. I felt sorry for the skaters.
Correct. Crackers tried to tell us that during the Beijing gala the place was basically packed , which of course it wasnt. I am so old I remember no empty seats during any figure skating event at Olys.....Tomorrow, I can watch the Team day 2 live and cant wait to see who appears to yak. And if they actually give scores....Ted Barton, we love you.
