2026 Pacific Coast Sectional Singles and U.S. Ice Dance Final

What are the rules for putting your hand on the ice after a jump? It looked like Brooks put a LOT of weight on his hand after one of his jumps, but I don't see any kind of deduction for it.

I think it is a GOE - Grade of Execution error.

Yes.

Touch down with both hands in a jump -2 to -3

Touch down with one hand or free foot (including in between jumps) -1 to -2

(And in case you're curious:

Landing on two feet in a jump -3 to -4

i.e., touching down lightly with the free foot is not the same as landing with weight on both feet)

My perception of these two teams, after seeing them live at Skate Canada, is that Somerville and Markelov are much better ice dancers than their partners. Purely subjective, I'm no ice dance expert or uber.
Well, yes, in the case of Somerville and Bratti, Ian definitely has better skills. Emily's not terrible, though. What strikes me about this team is that they have different body proportions which also impacts their minimal height difference. I've heard other critiques about how they present on the ice, yet they are not a bad team. It's just that, IMO, they are not well-packaged by MIDA coaches to best enhance their strengths and to camouflage their weaknesses like I.AM is able to do with many of their teams.

In regard to Neset/ Markelov, he is from Russia, and well-trained in the Russian style, so yes, maybe his skating skills are better. But Leah's skills are not far off the mark. Plus, they look good together, and they have a great opportunity to improve. N/M would seem to be a team I.AM would love to shepherd, but I don't think they would want to leave Colorado or WASA. I think N/M have a bit better skill and potential, as well as junior successes than a team like I.AM's Pham/ Spirodonov. (P/S look good together physically, but there's little that sets them apart from the field at the moment). They, and /or their coaches were inspired by Flores/ Desyatov's WSS story FD to create their new FD to Ghost: The Musical.

It's notable how a lot of ice dance teams and choreographers have been inspired by Flores/Desyatov's programs, moves, and partnership success. Even Shae Lynn Bourne used F/D's 'Poor Things' FD music to try and challenge Sarah Everhardt, so far to no avail.

Did Ryedin male it? I believe that would be the first Nationals appearance if so.

Congratulations to Ryedin, who will be making a return trip to Nats in 2026!
He previously competed at 2024 Nats in Junior Men, after placing second in Novice Men at sectionals.

( I'm happy for those who qualified for St. Louis, but sad for Vaclav and Arsen, who did not.)

I thought when Pham/Rogers split she was going to continue on and he was going to retire. Guess not.

My recollection is that Rogers never said or implied that he was going to retire.
In his gracious Instagram post at the end of the Pham/Rogers partnership, he did not share any thoughts one way or the other about future plans/hopes. I never understood why some fans misconstrued his post to be a declaration of retirement; I don't recall any basis for doing so.

Kelsey's dress is gorgeous and she skated with attack and some lovely spins and jumps

Love Joanne's dress as well. She starts with two really rough jumping passes. She moves like an ice dancer between her elements and is very musical.

Aya had a beautiful program and I love the colors of her dress. She had a tough day with the jumps. She is going to be wonderful when everything comes together.

I’m always happy for those who made it and sad for those who didn’t also.

Maybe I’m thinking of Bland/Sperry?

My brain is not big enough to keep up with them all🥲

You are thinking of when William Lissauer split from Emily Renzi. At first he retired, then later teamed up with Aneta Vaclavikova and they finished third in junior dance here.

That was a powerful skate from Hannah G. Her hand is really bloody from those excellent spins.
