A much better Sasha Spiral

BravesSkateFan said:
actually that would be 0-degrees. Now if you took one of your legs brought it up, over your head and continued to the ground so that your knees were facing opposite directions (one toward your front, one toward your back) then you'd had a 360 split. and THAT would be impressive ;)

THAT would make you double jointed...i always feel pain whebevr I watch those rubberband people acts...ouch

Wait...just thought of something else...you bring your leg up from the back and over your head, so your torso would also have to point downward, right? I think I've seen that at Cirque du Soleil. :sheesh:

I can make one knee faceleft and the other face right...that count? hmmm...guess not

Actually a 360 degree spiral all around would be, I believe, called a "Walk Over" in acrobatics:rolleye: . I believe all figure skaters can do that on the floor. Funny, I don't remember seeing a 'walk over' on ice.

A complete back bend in acrobatics would get the body in a 360 position. All that stuff is so easy when you're 5 years old.

Thanks Rgirl for answering the question I posed you (much appreciated), :)

What I men by "increased ankle flexion" is more forward bend in the ankle, ie, toes closer to the shin.

Shizuka is good to compare to Sasha on this point because they both have relatively short legs whereas Fumie has relatively long legs. Yags with is relatively short legs is better for comparing to Sasha.

By the way, I don't agree at all with you as regards the short legs part that you mentioned up above......IMHO Shizuka Arakawa, Alexei Yagudin, and Sasha Cohen have legs that are in direct proportion to the size of each of their respective bodies (meaning one body per skater :o )........no long torso, short legs scenario, rather that would be a favorite male skater of mine - Elvis Stojko. JMHO. As regards Fumie Suguri - same thing - legs in proportion to her body, no long legs scenario. JMHO. (:^)

Lol at the 360-degree split spiral :D ........had a good laugh w/my sister about that one last night........my apologies, mistake on my part. Could just imagine a skater traversing the ice rink with her head pointed toward the ground w/her legs on either side of her head ( :p ) ***Note: btw I've always had a weird fascination with a skater, such as Lucinda Ruh, possibly doing an upside down Biellmann Spin ~ think it would be simply AMAZING & perhaps beautiful, but boy would it shock the skating world w/comments about needing to be Gumby! LOL! (:^DDD***

Peace & Love, Nadine

P.S. Btw, I am sincere in my comments about Sasha.....she's frustrating (sometimes I like her & sometimes I don't).....and has yet to move me (her R&J program came the closest). But nobody performs bravura (term I picked up from Joesitz btw, thankya :) ) the way she does, not even Katarina Witt IMHO. I'm just glad that the US has such a gifted skater (a bunch of gifted skaters to be exact, no lie).

Nadine,
Hope my explanation made sense:) (Thanks for asking.) However, we do disagree on the body proportion issue. True, Sasha, Shizuka, and Yags don't have the kind of short legs relative to the torso that Stojko has, but IMO, they still have short legs relative to their torsos. And I do think Fumie has a slightly short torso relative to those beautiful long legs. Granted, these aren't big proportional differences, only an inch or two either way, but IMO it's enough to give each skater certain biomechanical advantages and disadvantages.

As for Sasha's spirals being "almost always on the flat" and lacking control, on another thread BravesSkateFan brought up the issue that often on forums, someone will post something years ago and whether it's right or wrong, it gets picked up as true and the next thing you know a skater has a reputation for "always" doing something when in fact they may have done it once or twice or else did it three or four years ago but have long since corrected it. We were talking about Sarah's reputation for underrotating her jumps getting out of hand since she didn't when she was in great shape. I think the same thing has happened with Sasha's spiral. Last season she did a change edge spiral in her LP. This season she just recently changed her SP spiral sequence to add a C/E plus some other changes. The first time she did the new C/E at Lalique, indeed the second edge was held only for a moment, but at the GPF, it was held for about two seconds.

Anyway, since I read so many people say "Sasha's spirals are always on the flat" I watch for her spiral edges and though they don't compare to Michelle and Irina's, an edge or change edge is always there on her arabesque spiral, just as it was last season. But I too have noticed that her fan spiral is done on a straight line and on a flat, which is too bad, because she used to do it on a curve with a gorgeous BOE.

An upside down Biellmann--COOL!

As for a 360-degree spiral, would Surya Bonaly's one-foot landing back flip qualify as a 360-degree spiral? I know at the '98 Olympics when she did it it qualified as infuriating the judges, lol. But obviously Surya knew that. I wonder if under the COP it would have qualified as an innovative move. Does anybody know if anybody has gotten points for an innovative move since they started using the COP?

rGirl - Sorry to bust the bubble but I just watched Sasha in the SP at the GP Finals. She did a very nice FO edge spiral but when she went to change edge, she hit the flat (as one must do to get to the other edge) but she stayed there. It was quite clear on TV. Maybe live it isn't, and maybe this is not her usual change edge spiral. I'll keep looking. The extension, of course, was fabulous.

ME: si, we'll agree to disagree. :)

ME: yeah, I'm serious, I truly do think it is possible & would absolutely love for someone to do it. I keep thinking of Lucinda Ruh b/c she is my favorite spinner of all-time & I like her long lines ~ think it would look so beautiful on her. *sigh*

ME: thanks for bringing up Surya's one-foot landing backflip......the BEST I've ever seen her perform it (bar none) was during the 1994 Olympic Exhibitions.....she was dressed in a one-piece shiney metallic catsuit that literally clung to every inch of her magnificent body ~ it looked GORGEOUS on her ~ showing off that powerful bod! Btw, Surya's favorite music is opera and that is what she skated to for her exhibition performance. Lovely. But what I remember the most about that particular performance was how the commentators, especially Scott Hamilton, were bowled over by her landing of that jump. Scott even said that, to his knowledge, it was the first time such a jump had ever been landed (by either a man or a woman; no lie). And then he went on to explain the reason why it was not allowed in eligible competition (i.e. the backflip) was b/c the judges said that such a jump could not be landed on one foot, which is what's required for a jump to count, but Surya had just proved them wrong! YES! {two thumbs way up} Oops, as regards whether or not it would qualify as a 360-degree spiral, I'm not sure but I definitely think it should count as a jump b/c it takes off on one foot & lands on the other foot. JMHO.

Peace & Love, Nadine

P.S. Wanted to add to my dream skate of Sasha's up above ~ can't believe that I forgot to include a spread eagle, which I consider Sasha's to be just gorgeous b/c of her hyperextended knees (same as Sarah Hughes btw; reminds me of ballerinas). Anyhow, I would include the following: spread eagle into 2axel in the scenario up above (no lie).

I agree that Shizuka and Alexei have legs in direct proportion to their bodies (especially Alexei seems to be perfectly proportioned ;) No, seriously, I really think so), but IMO Sasha Cohen's torso is a little too long in proportion to her legs (which was especially visible in her Carmen dress, I think). I don't notice it much now, but I remember that I noticed it immediately when I first saw her skate. When my father watched her for the first time a few weeks ago, he did comment on it.

I'll volunteer to measure Alexei--I mean his torso and legs, in his skivvies, natch;)--if you guys will measure Sasha and Shizuka. J/K. Oui on agree to disagree--except that Windspirit, her dad, and I agree on Sasha.:)
Rgirl
PS Thanks for reminding me of Surya's back flip at the '94 Olympic exhibitions, Nadine. That one was so spectacular. I've said this before, but I've seen her live off ice and Surya is the tiniest thing, not even five feet tall. She made Kristi Y. look like a giant! I think she looks tall both on TV and on the ice. But she is a peanut! And in competitive shape, not an ounce of fat on her. It's like her skeleton his covered with slabs of lean steak. Amazing phsyique.

Whoops!

Nadien & Windspirit, Not to beat a dead torso relative to dead legs and get totally off topic, but I just watched Yags on the repeat of the World Team Challenge and seeing him again, I saw I was wrong about him having relatively short legs. I remember first thinking that when he did "Broken Arrow" and again when he did "Man in the Iron Mask"; in both he wore a black unitard and perhaps that's what gave the at least me the illusion that he had a relatively long torso--or relatively short legs, whichever way you want to describe it. But seeing him in his costume for "Driven" -- squared-off untucked shirt, black pants -- I realized you guys are right. Yags has a very evenly proportioned body and in this costume, his legs in fact look slightly long relative to his torso. So much for depending on my memory rather than my eyes:eek: lol.

But having just watched Shizuka and Sasha, I stand by my previous opinion. So Windspirit and I now agree on 2 out of 3; Nadine and I are still 0 for 0. But I'm still up for measuring Yags. Maybe we can have a measuring party and each have a turn. All in good, healthy fun, natch.:)
Unreliably Yours,
Rgirl

Back to Sasha's spiral--you remember, the long lost subject of this thread, which I admit I helped lose;)--they showed the exhibitions from Trophee Lalique this morning (Sunday) on Lifetime. I was a good poster and posted a thread about it in the GP series folder, but as long as the subject of this thread is Sasha's spiral--again;)--I'll just say that during her exhibition, which is a slightly shorter version of her Nino Rota "Romeo and Juliet" program from last season, I thought she had a gorgeous secure curving BOE on her fan spiral (leg extended in front). In "Malaguena" and "Swan Lake" she's been doing it on a straight line and on the flat. I checked my "Carmen" tape (learned my lesson for the millionth time, lol) and she did the curving wonderful BOE on her fan spiral then too. I guess it's for having Sasha go through a certain pattern on the ice for choreographic reasons that Tarasova had her do the fan spiral that way. Too bad she can't figure out a way to have her do it with the curve and BOE.

I think it would be very cool to see if Sasha could do the fan spiral on a curve with a BOE with a change-edge into a BIE. She would probably have to move the leg position at least somewhat to the side--at least I did marking it in my apartment--so she doesn't fall forward, but that might look even more interesting.

And Nadine, your idea for an upside down Beillmann combined with the 360-degree thing made me think about Sasha doing her FOE arabesque spiral with the 180-degree split, but doing it in 360-degree turn, similar to what she does with the leg to the side catch-foot 360-degree turn, which is rather like a slow spin. And it would be really cool if she could take that and go directly into a forward scratch spin (she'd probably have to lower the leg somewhat to do so, but then even in my best dancing days I never had Sasha's flexibility), especially if she did that low sit spin with the leg to the side first, which she does in "Swan Lake" now right before she does the forward scratch spin with the cool arm variation.

Anyway, now that Sasha has established the "Wow" of the amplitude and extension of her arabesque spiral, I'd like to see her and Tarasova get creative with her edges and speed combined with some of the unique positions she can achieve--plus heart. For me, that's the way I'd like to see Sasha take her spirals to the next level, and I don't just mean Level 3, although that would be a COP bonus. I mean to the next level as a skater, artist, and person.

I can totally see it: Rgirl waves at Yags, "Hello!" -- "Hello," Yags smiles. "Do you want an autograph?" -- "Um... no." -- "A photo?" -- "Well, not really..." -- "What do you want, then?" Rgirl takes a measuring tape out of her sleeve, "Would you be so kind and spread your legs?" I'd pay to see that! Btw, here's a photo that nicely shows how well-proportioned his body is: http://skateclips0.tripod.com/picse01/FPpr26_36A.jpg (you'll have to copy & paste it to a browser, because direct linking doesn't work here).

What? I missed that, too? Now I'm going to kill myself. :o OK, not really, but this really sucks.

Windspirit, I just measured that picture. His inseam (crotch to the bottom of his boot) is 3 and 11/16th inches. His torso (waist to armpits) is 1 and 5/16th inches. His arm span is 6 and 11/16th inches.

Eat you heart out, Rgirl.

Quick! Someone give Alexei's real height to Mathman so he can figure out what those inches translate to. I'm too lazy to do the math myself. ;)

It's 175 cm (God, I'm probably opening a can of worms by doing this!:p )
