Have not really had the time or energy to write much on the forum last season, but I thought this might interest some of you.
I have been going through the archives of the US Skating Magazine (https://skatingmagazine.usfigureskating.org/) - a marvel for anyone interested in skating history. This morning I was reading the 1983 issues and lo and behold, found this paragraph in the report on the Europeans published in April 1983 (https://skatingmagazine.usfigureskating.org/article/Skating_198304_10):
"Fadeev, as well as including the triple Axel, combined triple Salchow with triple toe loop and failed an attempted quadruple toe loop -- not yet achieved in competition, but one sensed it was fairly imminent, Petr Barna of Czechoslovakia having also tried one during the final training."
No video as far as I could find.
Before this, the first (known) quad attempt in competition has been in Fadeev's name, but from a month later, at the Worlds (this is on video) in March. The Wikipedia page on quads gives Fadeev's 1984 Oly attempt as the first attempt.
To my surprise, Ryan Stevens of the Skate Guard Blog has not caught this although he mentions the 3S+3T combo from the Euros in a blog post on combinations. The blog on quad history mentions the Worlds. He refers to the German study on FS history for the first attempt in his book about jump history and the video evidence mentioned probably refers to the Worlds attempt since the Euros free has not been publically available AFAIK.
I still keep wondering if this is somehow wrongly put under the Euros since the Worlds article does not mention the quad attempt at all but is all about the 3As. But maybe not. The early history of quads is still dependent on written sources of all kinds and I do wonder what else could maybe be found in some old skating mags...
