This whole post Olympic figure skating alleged controversy has blown me away with it's hysteria and vicousness aimed at a great girl.

It is the most horrendous hate I have ever seen aimed at an athlete. The comments aimed at Adelina Sotnikova about karma, wishing her ill will, cursing at her and death threats (I haven't seen those but I have seen other posters mention them) and just general hate aimed Sotnikova's way even on her Instagram page. It is pathetic and quite sick to have that kind of hate in your heart for an athlete that gave the performance of her lifetime and lifted a beleagured nation of 140 million plus people for a special moment. Queen Kim would be disgusted by such hate filled commnets aimed at Adelina.
I'm curious, why do so many figure skating experts and fans fail to mention that the top 2 scores and the lowest 2 scores are deleted? So if the Russian and say Ukranian judges voted say 150 plus for Adelina those scores are deleted just like the lowest 2 scores for say Yuna Kim are cancelled as well That matters. This is the scoring system they just had to have after the 2002 scandal and Sotnikova took full advantage of this system adding up points with her more difficult program to upset Queen Kim and the valiant Carolina Kostner. The thing is there is no scandal here. Let's face it Adelina was coming on after a good grand prix season, a great gold medal performance at nationals, a fine silver at Europeans and a super short program in Sochi. Her level was rising and she was on the way up and that continued in the long program. Why do people act like Adelina is some kind of scrub or mediocre figure skater? She won Russian nationals whenh she was 12! Unbelievanle. Yes she's been up and down in her career and her new up is way up there but I I hope she is considered the most complete women's figure skater in the world in the future. She is not the most talented but once her artistry and style improves it will nicely complent her already elite technical and athletic skills. This is the scoring sytem. Deal with it or have it changed again to favor the artistry and grace of skaters rather than favoring the athleticism and more difficult point gathering programs like Adelina's. I expect Adelina to continue her career and continue to improve and not run and hide the way Lipinski and Hughes did after their gold medals.
By the way Sotnikova's upset of Kim was historical but Adelina's points added up to a gold medal the way Lysacek's points added up to gold in Vancouver against Plushenko arguably the greatest figure skater of all time. That is the system like it or not. And most don't like it these days.
Were Adelina's scores slightly inflated by the energy she brought, passion she showed and excellence of execution during her 2 programs due to the loud home crowd? I think so just the way Sarah Hughes scores were lifted in Salt Lake City in 2002 because of huge home crowd support and her reaching her highest level ever. Something similar happened to Sotnikova in Sochi as with Hughes in SLC.
While Adelina's free skate for the gold wasn't as flawless as Kim and Kostner's were she clearly as NBC pointed out before her free skate was skating a more technically difficult program than Kim and Kostner did. and she was scored that way because she skated very well and brought the house down. Well done to Adelina and her team for organizing this 17 year old girl with a program to rack up points with more triple jumps and combos than most of her top competitors. It really paid off.
By the way Kim, Sotnikovs and Kostner were in a virtual tie after the short program and Kostner skated a flawless free skate and she did it in her beautiful and artistic style with 7 triples like Sotnikova so where are the petitions and anger from her fans and from Italy? I wouldld't have acted so bitter and nasty if the gold went to Kim or Kostner. But like other times the Olympic gold medal went to more of an upstart rather than the established superstar. Nothing new here.
I can only surmise that the same judges who placed Sotnikova ahead of Kim are the same judges or some of the same judges who always voted Kim for gold or at least put her on the podium. There is no doubt that Kim is great. Se may be the greatest women's figure skater of all time. But the scoring sytem worked against her this time.
One thing is for sure this was a very close competition where the scoring system went to the advantage of the Russian as NBC said it would. It did. I am sure Yuna would be sick at the vile hate filled comments aimed at Sotknikova by some of her fans and compatriots as would many of the sports leaders of South Korea. If there was an investigation into the scoring they will fin that Adelina's 2 highest scores were deleted and Kim's 2 lowest scores were deleted. That matters.
