Adelina Sotnikova

A famous South Korean athlete found herself hounded by online haters after she simply ‘liked’ a video she came across on the Internet.

South Korean gold medal gymnast Son Yeon-jae was no exception to the nation's merciless cyber bullies, with the so-called "keyboard warriors" inundating the star's Instagram page until it crashed.

Netizens flocked to Son's social network site after she posted a "Like" for an Instagram post by Russian figure skater Adelina Sotnikova. The post shows Sotnikova biting her gold medal at the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014.

After initially shutting down her Instagram account after facing a flood of negative comments,
Son Yeon-jae eventually reactivated it and posted an apology for her actions.
Poor girl, that isn't normal at all.
I dont think it s that simple though. SYJ was one of korean athlete that doesnt have a good image in SK. I m not sure what she do but in many of her articles usually there is a lot of hate even before she liked a post about adelina so in addition to her as korean athlete but seem to be adelina side in that olympic medal controversy ,they of course would get mad especially with the next olympic in their country. I mean do you guys know how much hate comments the Japanese gave to wakaba when she said her favorite skater was kim when there is asada in her country? Both korea and japan ( china included) netizens are pretty rapid in sprutting hate comments, first because of the super fast internet and how much those 3 countries use it, 2nd because everyone always pay attention to real time online news and leaving comments, and 3rd because those former two country honestly have the highest stress and highest suicide number in the world and in addition with how high their nationalism is (china included) . So they just hate on every high profile individuals who messed up in public (even yuna kim). Oh and idt evgenia will get praised if she gave indication that she is in yuna camp in those controversy as well.

ADELINA Sotnikova: "I do not agree with Wagner." ZAGITOVOY PROGRAM - BEST "

- How do you generally speak of the Russians at the Olympic team tournament?

- At the moment, everyone has shown the best that they can do now. But further there will be personal competitions, there there will be absolutely other history, - has told Сотникова. - The most interesting is ahead!

- The Russian team had a chance for gold, if Mikhail Kolyada showed his maximum on the first day of the competition?

- Oh sure. Then we would be the first, but it turned out as it turned out. We took silver, and this is also an excellent result considering that our team is very young, all skaters are debutants of the Olympics, except for Bobrova and Solovyov. Now we just need to rejoice for the team and not to single out anybody.

- American figure skater Ashley Wagner accused Alina Zagitova of "killing time at the beginning of the program, and then chaotic jumping at the end." What do you say to that?

- I do not agree. I think that Alina has the most complicated program, all the elements are collected at the end. She jumps a lot with her hands up, which complicates the performance. She is so much better, she wants to do her own way, and not like everyone else. And she gets points also not like everyone else. I can only thank her for her excellent work. This is the best free program that I saw at the Games-2018. I thought there would be a world record, but the judges decided otherwise.

- Zagitova said that she became friends with Medvedeva. Can there be friendship between competitors?

- Everything is possible, people come together during the team competitions, but then everyone will close from each other, because personal rentals are completely different. Now all the fellows, all at the same time, but then competition will begin.

- What were your relations with Elizaveta Tuktamysheva and Yulia Lipnitskaya when you were competitors in the Russian team?

- Personally, I always had good relations with everyone, I'm such a person. Why fight outside the site, if the most important thing happens on the ice. There we are competitors, and outside the site this is not.

Her responses are so wise, very thoughtful. Did Wagner say zagitova is wasting time at the start and then going chaotic with the jumps at the end just because Wagner herself didn't do her programs like that?

Everyone does their programs differently, and if zagitova is able to use the system to her advantage and obtain extra points, that's great. I don't see how that is a problem. It's not like the start of zagitova’s program is just crossovers...

Good on Adelina and so happy for OAR team for team silver. They should be proud. And as sotnikova said, they are all debutants except for Katya bobrova and Dima soloviev. And to get silver behind Canadian team which consists of many Olympic veterans, I'd say it was a big feat.

I cant believe the Yuna bots are still going strong. The South Korean people that are harassing the South Korean gymnast for liking a video of Adelina are beyond weird they are sickos of epic proportions in almost the perverse way. What must Yuna Kim think of all this vile hate?

I have not visited this forum in many many months maybe close to a year because of all the medals being stripped from the Sochi games from Russian athletes the fear for Adelina being stripped was huge for me and I'm so damn glad she gets to keep her gold medal when she came up with one of the greatest clutch performances ever in figure skating to win that gold in 2014 on her home ice. I am so sorry she's been so injury-prone since the Sochi games. after she won the gold in 2014 she should have gone on to compete at the World Championships where she probably would have metal. Even though she was kind of tired. if one of these two great Russians wins the gold tomorrow night I hope she gets to go to the world championships and fact I hope they both go because they're so great!

To be honest, I quit being figure skating fan and visiting fan forums after Sochi (except my fav skater's fanfest thread) because all the cyberbullying that Adelina had to endure sickens me to no end. NOBODY deserves that level of bullying. She didn't kick someone's puppy, she didn't commit murder, why do the netizens treat her that way. My feelings towards Yuna also soured (I know it's absolutely not Y's fault, she can't control how people on the internet to behave).

Before Sochi, I only mildly interested in Adelina (I'm more of Team Mao), but oh boy Adelina skates with such fire oh her FS. Definitely one of my favourite performance of all time.

Can anyone update me if Adelina is happy? I didn't see anything online during the olympics commenting on Alina and Evgenia her Russian compatriots who stole the show in ladies figure skating with their incredible performances. Did the badgering she has taken for 4 years online from a certain skaters fans make her afraid to post online? I wouldn't blamer Adelina if that happened. It is endless and so unfair. Can she get an instagram or twitter that just allows her to post without others comments or likes and dislikes?

At first in Sochi I thought the gold could have gone to Adelina or Yuna. Both were great in their own ways though Sotnikova had a more difficult program to perform. Either could have won gold. Then I became even more elated that Ade won gold after I learned what she had to put up with where online abuse goes. I hope she is happy and enjoying life. But I am sad she has had to go through all this. At least she gets to keep her Sochi gold medal forever and looking back doing a harder LP than Yuna did really paid off for her. But she should have been at the olympics in some way giving her opinion on the Russian figure skaters if she wanted to be there. I heard Yulia was there and thought Adelina should be there too. Oh well. Hopefully Russia can get a gold medal dynasty in ladies figure skating in the olympics and if they do it will have been Adelina who got it going in Sochi with her richly deserved gold medal. It seems like Alina Zagitova won't face the same hate online and that is good. Alot of people are upset she won gold. I think it could have gone wither way like Sotnikova and Kim. Alina just racked up the points with her difficult program kind of the way Adelina did. It's a very smart strategy for those few who can perform such difficult programs.

I agree with you so much. But did Yuna ever publicly ask her fans not to harass Adelina online like they have for 4 years? Yuna is a class act but some of her fans are not. Just some not all. I am hoping Adelina who is only 21 can do what she loves the rest of her life. She has earned the right to do that.

Adelina did commentate on the figure skating, although I'm not sure for which Russian channel - they had multiple ones interestingly! (Here in Australia only one channel gets the right to show the Olympics) She also posted this when Med and Alina got silver and gold: https://www.instagram.com/p/Bfh8ZfHl76z/

She's happy though :) I'm not sure what her plans are now with all the up and coming Russian girls, but she was hoping to compete again someday last I heard... She trains at Plushy's school and is just getting back her jumps (she snapped an achilles tendon and it's taken her a long time to recover). She's also starred in a few of Plushy's shows and having a great time.

She has had quite a bit of trouble with her social media and the trolls, but it seems to be sorted now! Fingers crossed.
