"No need to torture yourself with something you don't love": an interview with Adyan Pitkeev about the past and the present
Adyan Pitkeev is a former Russian figure skater, silver medallist of the 2014 World Junior Championship and bronze medallist of the 2015 Russian Championship. He ended his career in 2017 due to a serious back injury.
Adyan was born on 16 May 1998 in Moscow. He has Kalmyk roots; his grandfather is a pure-blooded Kalmyk. In an interview, the his father said that he named his son Adyan in honour of a close family friend, a doctor of medical sciences - Adyan Nimeevich Dyugeev. "So that he wouldn't forget his roots, as most of his relatives are Kalmyks." Adyan's uncle, Viktor Pitkeev, is an Honored Artist of the Republic, and his aunt, Lyubov Inzhievna, is an Honored Teacher of Kalmykia. For RIA Kalmykia, Adyan spoke about his beginnings as a figure skater, injury, music, sources of inspiration and work as a coach. First steps as a figure skater "How did you come to figure skating?" When I was a kid, I was watching TV and saw Alexei Yagudin perform, I immediately said to my mother, "I want to do the same," and they took me to the rink. It just happened that my father wanted to take me to football. When I was seven years old, I was offered the opportunity to take up football, but I refused. I was good at skating. I guess I was too lazy to learn a new sport. I can't say that I gave it all my maximum to skating. As soon as I started to win something, I got motivated. I liked that someone believed in me, hoped and cared. I like to feel that connection. First competitions and impressions on them is it was hard for me. I understood that I was going to place almost last and nobody was really interested in me. It's hard to perform at times like that. After a while, when I was already competing as a favorite, I became more confident. There was no fear. Yes, I was nervous, but that is normal before the start. The more responsibility, the easier it is for me.
Injury
At the time I had to retire from figure skating due to injury, I was far from peak condition. In male figure skating, that peak comes at the age of 23. It was frustrating.
Career as a coach
Now I am coaching children, passing on my experience. Quite unique, because my vision of figure skating is my own. I try to be with the children at the same level but also on distance. You have to find that balance. I've always had that approach in my relationships with my coaches. I think this is important, because if there is a big distance between you and a child, it is difficult to build a relationship, to calm them down somewhere, to tell them something, to help them. That is, there will be no special trust. The work of a coach is psychology in many aspects that comes with practice. I developed this psychology with a specialist, but mostly everything comes with practice. "Are there any difficulties in this field?" The difficulties... The monotonous schedule? That's a difficulty. I need something new to happen. More freedom.
Favourite trick
I love doing the triple axel. He's let me down sometimes, of course, but that's the way it is. *The triple axel is a three and a half turn jump
Inspiration and motivation Music.
I Love it. Biographical films about famous people. I've seen "Notorious" recently and it's quite motivating. I'm not the type of person who travels a lot, but sometimes I feel like going somewhere. I managed to visit many countries when competing. Japan was my favorite, although I have only been to Fukoka. I remember walking around at night and witnessing the races. It was really cool. I like the nightlife, not the clubs, but the fact that the city becomes alive at that time. That schedule is more comfortable for me, all the activity and inspiration comes at that time of day. Also, the music, talking with people, food - that's what inspires me and gives me a lot of pleasure. This also includes something extreme. I like it when you get such a powerful adrenaline rush. Like snowboarding, for instance. I love the thrill.
Musical activities
I was in a music band for a while. I used to play electric guitar, compose music, learn the theory. I was interested in this subject. And so it happened that the band was formed. We played gigs. But you have to understand that we were playing underground music, which is not very interesting now. That's where I ran into a problem. I needed a lot of people to do some kind of show. There was a too small audience. Now I listen to more music, I write from time to time. I started doing vocals, and I love it.
Destination
Do you think you've found your destiny?" No. I'm a person who doesn't plan things, everything comes out of the moment. As it happens, it will happen. In the future, I will continue to work on my creative path. "What is strength, Adian?" Of course the truth, any lie is revealed over time. There is no need to lie to yourself or others. Plans for the future The main plans are related to music, I plan to make a recording in the studio. We will see the result. It's just a hobby so far, but we'll see in the future. I'll also continue my work with children.
About Kalmykia
I have been to Kalmykia in winter. When I come here, I like going to a khurul (
that’s a buddhist temple, the kalmyk’s are of buddhis religiont): it's nice there, and I feel peace. What can you wish to the younger generation? Guys, be yourself, be busy with your hobbies and work, you don't have to torment yourself with something you don't like. Enjoy the moment. Go up to your mom and say, "I'm not a lawyer, I want to clean leaves and sing at crossings, fly on a plane, travel. Do what you want to do. Never be afraid to show your emotions, they should always be expressed. I came to the point after a few years where I do what I really enjoy. I feel like myself and finally found that unity.
As a lawyer I have to laugh that Adian apparently thinks being a lawyer is a very boring job as it is not.
