Alexander Petrov

Kudos for being the only clean skater in the sp. That event was rough. Good luck in the free! :cheer2:

"e" for the flip. *sigh* It didn't look that bad to me in real time, but... He also got level 2 for a spin.

Too bad he won't be in the final flight tomorrow, but he did skate the only clean SP, and got better PCS than the people below him, at least.
It wasn't an e, ! at worst. Very harsh decision. But if that's the way the tech panel want to call it what can you do.
The PCS is okay considering it's his very first GP.

Nothing pleasing about the overall score but Mishin seemed satisfied with his performance so that was at least reassuring.

Fsrussia article, which is somewhat positive about Sasha, something that hasn't happened in awhile. So here:

"Russian figure skater Alexander Petrov is the seventh after the short program at the second stage of the Grand Prix series in Lethbridge, Canada. Leader Japanese Daisuke Murakami, Canadian Patrick Chan - second, the American Adam Rippon - third.

The student of Alexei Mishin purely performed his program that opened the triple Axel, and then jumped into a cascade of two triple jumps - Lutz and toe loop, and added a triple flip. Debutant adult Grand Prix did not include a quadruple jump in the program, made a bid for a stable ride and, indeed, Alexander rode very confident. For equipment Petrov scored 35.64 points, and the final score was 71.44.

The leader after the first type of Japanese Daisuke Murakami, who a few years to play for the United States and only recently started to ride for the team in Japan, with a quadruple Salchow jump blot, performed a triple axel and a cascade - a triple lutz - triple loop. Frank Carroll's ward got the technique for more than the other members of the Canadian stage - 42.17, and the result is 7 points ahead of hundredths titled Canadian Patrick Chan, who returned to the ice after the break.

Excessive anxiety prevented Patrick Chan skate on home ice with no errors. Canadian fell on a triple axel, made a blot on the road with the second toe loop in a cascade - a quadruple toe loop - triple lutz doubled not "fit" into the music.

He closed the first three American Adam Rippon, who fell on the quad lutz. However, Axel lost three and a half turns, and a cascade of two triple jumps - lutz - coat.

But the main surprise in men short program at the Grand Prix at Canada Olympic champion was the performance of the Japanese Yuzuru Hanyu. Hanyu performed a triple axel, then doubled toe loop, triple Lutz jump cascade - double toe loop, and finally got the technique for just 28.43 points - is the penultimate result. With 73.25 points after the short program Hanyu occupies only the 6th place."

It's really nice to read something positive written about Sasha on fsrussia, he really deserved it. Just fingers crossed he will be able to skate farely clean today, a good fs would be a well needed confidence booster to him at this point of the season.

Just finished watching his FS practice session. He did a few jumps outside the run through but only one jump during the run through. The program is gorgeous, they made some small choreographic changes which this time I think has made the program better. His skating has really improved a lot since last season. After his run through he spoke to Mishin for a short while, did some stroking and left the ice early. Oh and he waved to the audience this time before the run through, same gesture as yesterday after his SP. I will add video once it appears.

I got home just in time to watch his FS. It was so good, I'm so proud of him! 2 clean skates in his very first GP! And the only skater in this competition to do so. :cheer:
He's starting to show his extroverted personality on camera too. :)

I will add a better quality version if one shows up.

Well done, Sasha! I'm so proud of him! I was thinking before that if he was to hit rock bottom, it was best he did so somewhere like Cup of Nice... Now, he can build on what he achieved here! Onwards and upwards! Excelsior! :)

Oh, adelia - I showed my husband Sasha's SP - and he raved about the beauty and flow of his skating. Sometimes I'm quite fond of that fellow.;) (though don't go and tell him that;))

Congrats for a great senior gp debut, and especially for being the only skater to go clean in both the short and long! Good luck in the next event.

So proud of Sasha. I was a little worried considering the LPs haven't been great for a while, but it seems he's back on track. :)

I hope a TSN video shows up soon. Tracy Wilson had many wonderful things to say about Sasha. (I quite enjoyed her commentary throughout the event. Positive and supportive of the skaters, while pointing out weaknesses in a "here's how to improve" way). But, in case no video comes, what I remember of her comments:
- great technique
- good edgework and rhythm on the steps
- feels his music and is a performer in addition to a jumper
- all he needs is a quad and more speed (I do agree with this. He's not currently as fast as some older skaters, but the speed with come with time.:))

In fact, I'm almost worried about overhype at this point, what with the Kulik-Plushenko-Yagudin comparisons and the "next great Russian" tags. No pressure, Sasha. ;)

Thank you! That's so nice to hear. :) I agree with the above points too.
It's really great to see people appreciate his skating.

And once again, so proud of Sasha. He's had such a difficult year since he fell ill in Jan. But I can see really solid improvement in his skating and his programs this season showcase his strengths well.

I don't think we need worry about overhype - or not yet, at least. Especially internationally, since most eyes will be on Chan and Hanyu anyway (I mean, people almost seem to forget about Javi - the - ahum! - reigning World Champion... ;)), and Sasha doesn't have the quad yet, so isn't in real contention for the medals. When he gets the quad, and starts landing it consistently in competition... well, that may be another thing.:) Still, it's always lovely to see people have nice things to say about him.:)

Oh definitely no worries about overhype at this point. Especially not from Russian Fed/media. lol

Thanks for the CBC commentary sum-up, Sandpiper! It's always nice to hear a North American commentator expressing genuine appreciation of him.

Yay! Woohoo! At last we'll get to see his EX. :) I'm so glad they liked him. :)
