Alexander Petrov

He's on the entries list for Spartakiad.

That's a junior competition, right? And is it before JW's?
I'm asking just because if it is before JW's, the only reason would have one junior competition before
maybe-by-very-little chance going there... Still, wouldn't really make much sense though.

Yes, it's a junior domestic competition. But it's after JWs. The SP is on 26th March. There are two representatives from each region but it was up to his coaches to decide whether he goes or not. I don't know why his coaches want him to go.

And if they are sending him to Spartakiad, it means that they know that he's not the first substitute for Worlds.

An excerpt about the new rink from Moskvina's interview:

"In October of last year, our city of St. Petersburg opened a school "Star ice", mainly for Moskvina and Mishin's pupils. This group for skating under the leadership of Mishin and pair skating under the leadership of Moskvina. Now we train in the Palace of Sports "Jubilee", but the "Gazprom" has already built a new ice rink, which is intended for work and training, including our school. On March 21 at the new rink we begin trial a week of training, and from mid-April through May will be there to train due to the fact that the game will take place in St. Petersburg Ice Hockey World Championship. In summer, there is also plan to ride. We hope that the elite group partly remains in the "Jubilee", because we are working here since 1967. It is the center, the heart of St. Petersburg figure skating. But we will see."

Well if Sasha is going to Spartakiad he won't be at the trial in April it seems.
And I guess it has sentimental value to them but there's no practical reason for the elite group to remain in Yubileyny. They are at a disadvantage with poorer training conditions so I hope they change their minds.

Oh, that is sad - I hope she gets the treatment she needs, and will get well soon. My thoughts to Sasha and his family.

Should have sent Petrov. Feds should always send their best skaters. You play with fire, you get burned.

Well, there is no guarantee that Sasha (or Petrov in this situation since we did have one Sasha in JWC...) would have had it together. (I still remember way too vividly last year. )
Oh well, Russian men and the JWC doesn't seem to go well together.

But yes, you are right. Taking risks is always dangerous, especially when talking about worlds.

He was ill last year - respiratory infection. He did not train much. And then in practice he fell badly.

Nothing is guaranteed and I did not say it was. But Russia would have had 3 shots at a medal, not 2. Apparently they thought 2 were more than enough, well they were very wrong.

Petrov did exactly what aliev and Samarin did. These skaters have so much talent and potential but the russian program for men is dead and cant work for any of them and they need to move to North America and the federation has to move them. Maybe to some other european country.

I'm sure illness is the reason why Russian men under-performed at Junior Worlds this year too... oh wait. :rolleye:

And move to some other country to train?

Okay, so I just checked the scores and protocols for the medalists. (Sorry, didn't do it yesterday because I was waaaay too tired) And it is true that to medal, Petrov wouldn't have needed to do anything more than he usually does in his FP. But then again, the same goes for many other men too...

So what I'm trying to say is that Adelia does have a good point...

no medal chances for russian men in 2018, maybe 2022 ? or it could get worse :shock2:

If you want to continue this discussion, there are more appropriate/relevant threads for this. And if you have trouble finding those, I can always make some suggestions for you.

Well no one likes the status of Russian men thread because its so sad!

That doesn't mean it should be posted here. This is a fanfest thread, a place to celebrate a specific skater. This is actually in the forum rules. So take it elsewhere.

No need to make Sasha's thread sad as well then - he's actually had quite a nice season, everything considered. And he's only 16, so there's no need to Despair.:)

A very nice season to be honest. We all were probably expecting a lot more of a bumpy ride from him this season. And hopefully he can keep it up for the seasons to come. :)
