Alexandra Trusova

I'm so apalled by the scoring today, I can't even.

The PCS for that beautiful program were an utter insult and the complete lack of respect for the 3A attempt was criminal.

I've always liked Sasha the best out of her, Anna and Aliona and it stinks the Fed is treating her like this.

I'm just worried she'll be so disheartened by this. What was the point of training that 3A? Her score was no better! :(

Sasha's lovely skate from today:

The costume is really very pretty, and green suits her so well. She's also using her upper body and arms better than before - her extra choreography classes are definitely paying off! I'm trying and failing to remember my long-unused ballet terminology, but the steps where she is doing a leg lift like a développé with her arms describing a gentle circle over her head in the direction of the raised leg are really lovely. And well done to her for getting that 3A round!

Gosh, I just want one competition where they judge Trusova fairly and don’t pretend she is not artistic.
Okay, here is Ted:

“Amazing to watch how much Sasha Trusova has improved in each movement she does throughout her short program and how she has become so connected to her music. This little lady has become a young woman in performance while still maintaining great athletic ability. Very nice!”

Sasha seemed so happy after her programme. Cudos to her for saving that 3A and for working so hard on her presentation. I was so excited when I watched her leaving the ice smiling and apparently satisfied with her skate, only to feel utterly disheartened now after witnessing the blatant overscoring going on for some other skaters. It is a shame how the RusFed treats their former darling and quad queen.

It was clearly predefined to keep Sasha "a one quad handicapped". The 9.5 or so gap is considered OK by judges.

Just do your best tomorrow and the rest of the pack will leave the rink in tears. Regardless how many points judges denied you today.

On a lighter note, today's proceedings gave me an idea for Sasha's ex. How about going with Leonard Cohen's "Everybody knows"? The cover version by Sigrid (soundtrack to the movie Justice League) would fit very well. It includes subtle lyrics like "Everybody knows that the dice are loaded" and "Everybody knows the fight was fixed". They should make sure to cut to those lines multiple times throughout the programme....

In a bigger context, Sasha's skate today was a great step forward. First rotated 3A in competition without falling, that's a milestone achievement! Just like how Nathan Chen's 3As used to be terrible but now are quite consistent, I think she just has to do them more regularly at events and get over the psychological barrier (while fine-tuning them in training of course). Like Nathan (and maybe anyone else with a multi-quad arsenal), setting incremental goals throughout the season is a better approach for Sasha than going all-out at each event and risking peaking too early. Russian Cup Stage 2 was a good outing to test the 3A - the goal is not to score maximum points here, but at Nationals, Euros and Worlds if they happen.

I felt bad for Sasha as she looked sad after her score was announced. If I could, I would ask her to not be discouraged and keep up the good work, and not to be upset over things outside of her control i.e. how the judges score other skaters. At the moment she might have to skate the equivalent of 10 points more than others to actually score above them, but I think she is capable! The key is not to let a temporary decline in domestic ranking/scores (or tabloid/online negativity) impact her self-confidence. If she can maintain/improve her form and stay in the top 3 or 4, by the time the international skating season is back to normal, she will reap her deserved rewards because judging panels at overseas events should be less influenced by Russian politicking. It might take a year, so in the meantime, be patient, train hard and stay healthy Sasha!

And good luck for tomorrow's free

One thing I didn't understand (beside the scoring) was why she jumped her flip at a different moment that at test skates. I was super impressed that she managed to pull a triple right after her cantilever, it was gorgeous and I figured it would get the GOEs sky-high, so why did they change that ? Because of the 3A, they needed to get the flip back to her usual entry ? I'd like to understand :)

Other than that I really liked her performance today, a bit less musical and more focused, but it's only the first comp of the year ! I think she can make this program suit her. The dress is beautiful too, I just wish she had long sleeves cause it does help 'soothe' her movements.

Best of luck to her for tomorrow, fingers crossed that she'll be in pants and puffed sleeves shirt 🤞💜
