Alina Zagitova

Alina, without a 3-3, made it to first place.

The absence of a 3-3 cost her dearly I’m sure, I bet she would’ve scored in the 80s with it. But she managed to keep her head in its place and the two other jumps, plus her spins and steps went beautifully.

I was sad to see her sad crying face but Eteri consoled her well. In the end of the day it is what it is, she can do her jumps but she needs to be ready to keep her cool when something misfires.

I’m glad she is in first place and I wish her a great Carmengitova tomorrow.

Side note: seeing the heartbreak and the deep crying from Kaori moved me beyond words. Today was not an easy competition for anyone.

I think Alina recovered great about that pop; even though she made a mistake, she remained focused and executed perfectly all the other elements, got Level 4's on everything, so her performance was at a very high level.

Still first place for her, also with some points lead, so it's not so bad, these things always happen

What broke my heart was seeing her crying...she is a perfectionist and is so hard on herself, but I don't want her to be sad. :sad21:

It has got to be beyond frustrating to Alina when she hasn't missed a single jump in practice or the warm-up and it's not even like she made a mistake and fell. It's like her mind/body just said 'no'. Kurt Browning used to say every skater would rather fall on a jump than pop it. Not just because popping is more costly. Let's look at it like she got it out of her system.

I did not expect the "pop" on the 3Lo after those great practices

Just shows how truly difficult this sport is - such a fine line between success and disaster.
I thought she looked great on the 3Lz - I wonder what happened????

Too bad she didn't "abort" the 3Lo like the Olympics and add the combo to the 3F.
She probably felt fine going into the loop, so no need to abort, though.
I think she was probably surprised too that 3Lo didn't happen :scratch2:

Anyways, she held it together extremely well for the rest of the program.
That's probably a 10 point hit for popping the loop.
I assume the negative GOE was for the awkward landing of the loop.

I like that she is really bothered when she doesn't perform well.
I don't think it is about scores or placement - she just wants to show the audience what she is capable of.

Myself, I managed to hold it together during her performance, but when Kaori fell, I started crying. :sad21:

A tough day for my favorites.

Eteri's reaction when alina pop, looks like she gonna beat her after lol

?? That was totally unnecessary

About Alina: I was so sad seeing her pop the loop because I know the expectations she and everybody else puts on her. But it‘s just the first GP event, this happened last year, too in many SPs and she always skated a clean FS afterwards. I‘m totally sure she will make it tomorrow! Nothing too bad happened, she‘s still in first and by a five point margin, that gold will be hers!!!! Carmengitova will slay it tomorrow and make us forget she even had a mistake in the SP! And even if she makes mistakes (which I don‘t believe she will), she will still win the gold. Kaori is too far behind (my heart is still broken about her, though... She is so wonderful and I wanted her and Alina on the podium next to each other :sad21: ) and she has a 5 point lead over the second place. That‘s not as much as we‘re used to but it will be enough for her to stand on the top of the podium with a big smile!!

I know you are probably disappointed, Alina but no harm is done and we all know you will and can be clean tomorrow! You can do it! We will all cheer for you!! :hap10: :cheer:

Something positive: She is so beautiful in that dress. :luv17:

Sorry if this has been asked before. Is it more points deducted to pop or to fall?

Glad she is still first. So heartbreaking to see her disappointment! [emoji24]
I think it depends. If she rotated the 3Lo and fell - not so bad.
But if the 3Lo is downgraded to 2Lo and -1 for fall probably about the same (?)

I know Johnny Weir usually harps on "rotate and fall" is better, I agree with Scott Hamilton.
He says a "pop" is involuntary and even gave an example of his doing it in 1984 Olympics.

Totally agree, everything was perfect during her practices. And in her warm-up she specifically trained 3Lz+3Lo, and it was successfully landed every time. I would be very frustrated, too. :sad21: I think Alina will take this experience and learn from it; and tomorrow she'll shine, with a clean Carmengitova, leaving this mistake behind her.

Maybe close to 80. I think she lost about 10 points on the combo.
Who knows, maybe without the mistake, she would have been even better on the rest of her elements.
She was probably more conservative with the rest of the program - especially the 2A which was the next jump.
I was so relieved when she nailed the 3F - which seemed to get very good GOE.

Kaori - I am crying again thinking about her SP. Well - she has a great LP and maybe she can make a big jump up in the standings like Evgenia did last week.

I wish I could give them both hugs.
:ghug:

Little calmed down, my brain works again.

So, Alina is still first. After combo, she proved during the rest of the program she can still fight. Reminded me Alyona's SP from Ostrava, when she poped 2A but was able to finish her skate, tears came only after that. I understand Alina is not happy now, on the other hand, she has the motivation to be perfect, I think that helped her always.

Alina gets nervous a lot in competition, she does not have nerves of steel. Mistakes are fine. The expectations are probably too high for her being OGM and having delivered perfect skates at Nebelhorn & Japan Open but her performance today isn't shocking or something to be worried about. Remember her in the K&C last year at IDF? She looked completely crushed but the FS she delivered after that, i remember even the british eurosport commentators were shook by how beautifully she recovered. She even kept smiling all throughout her performance and tried to stay as focused as possible, landing the rest of her jumps with these difficult entries. I think we can and should stay positive and send her all the positive vibes. The universe will deliver them to her tonight :agree:

Alina's Fan Fest.

You took a wrong turn somewhere buddy.
Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
:handw:

Alina got 2+ GOE on every element except the combination, and effectively 3+ GOE because the only 2s she got were on two separate elements and were eliminated when calculating her final GOE.
