Nice article appeared on Alina's birthday on ria.sport, missed it somehow
Millionaire in a dream crisis: how Zagitova monetizes her popularity
Olympic champion in figure skating Alina Zagitova turns 20
Alina Zagitova accomplished the almost impossible - for some time after the Olympic gold, continuing her sports career with victories, the figure skater became the most commercially successful Russian figure skater in history. RIA Novosti Sport looks into this uniqueness.
Imagine that you are fifteen years old and you are already an Olympic champion. And then, a world champion. In general, you have collected all the existing titles in figure skating without having time to collect marks in the school certificate.
A dream come true of Olympic gold inevitably turns into a dream crisis - no matter how old you are when it comes true - but when you're fifteen years old, it adds uncertainty. What should you dream about now? Shouldn't you be ashamed to dream of something else? Why dream at all if everything important in life has already happened? To answer these questions for yourself, you need time, but during the training process you just don't have enough of it. There is only the skating rink, recovery after training and sleep. No time for reflection of any kind in big sports.
The system is focused on the result, and the conveyor works non-stop. In Russia, a figure skater cannot afford to miss the season out of a desire to just relax - upon her return, even more than one rival will be in your place. And there is also a sense of responsibility and a feeling that you owe everyone around you - the flag, the coach, the club, the federation, the family and the fans. Due for the contribution of resources, finances, time and adoration. Well, if all your merits in life at that moment fell on success in sports, and you still don’t know how to do anything else, it’s rather strange to refuse what brings success. Alina Zagitova did not refuse - after all, she is a disciplined athlete. In addition, her coach Eteri Tutberidze had a big dream - to have an adult champion. Alina had a mission to grow up and not lose her champion reputation.
Together with the gold medal of the Olympics, the athlete receives something like a package of securities - figuratively speaking, of course. They have the opportunity to convert the medal and its story into advertising contracts, promotion of personal social networks, invitations to the shows. All this gives a chance to recoup the long-term expenses of parents, make good money right now and save a little for the future. Zagitova received the same "package" - all that remained was to properly dispose of it. But it was an almost impossible task for a figure skater continuing her sports career.
Nevertheless, in terms of monetization of success, Alina has clearly surpassed her predecessors. The Sochi Olympic champion Adelina Sotnikova, apart from being an ambassador with Nike, did not receive major international advertising contracts, remaining somewhat in the shadow of another star of that Olympics, Yulia Lipnitskaya. Yulia herself worked with the global Adidas, which was already a breakthrough, but, firstly, she sincerely avoided publicity and all events related to it, and secondly, she was too focused on continuing her career. That is, she gave it all her time, energy and even health.
The time allotted for the monetization of Olympic gold is running out fast. Four years after the victory, the planet is guaranteed to have the next Olympic champion, and new interesting names of the daring and attention-hungry appear every season.
Zagitova in this regard, just consider it, was not particularly lucky - at the very next Russian championship after the Olympics, she was overtaken by three little buttons with nuclear potential at once - 14-year-old Shcherbakova, Trusova and Kostornaya. That is, they could not yet compete in seniors due to their age, but they had already bypassed all adult superstars in the internal rating, immediately falling into the sights of PR bosses. Zagitova was saved from media oblivion against the backdrop of a loud younger generation by her rare silent charm and the support of a huge audience who fell in love with a chiseled figurine in a red tutu at the PyeongChang 2018 Olympics.
Here one could conclude that Alina, in principle, should not have entered the post-Olympic season - in fact, she could not train at full power, nor engage in contracts at full strength. But that would not be true. Zagitova is unique in that she managed to participate in a number of commercial projects without actually slowing down the training pace (decent results in sports are proof of this). Yes, she could have "shone" outside the rink much more and earn more, but let's not forget that the finale of that season brought her the gold of the World Championship - perhaps even more coveted than the Olympic one. And for this gold it was necessary to train a lot and hard. In general, it is not a fact that someone else besides Zagitova would've be capable of such a thing. This requires a unique combo of physical and psychological qualities with a certain amount of luck.
A complete set of titles, coupled with youth, beauty and a heart-wrenching story, has made her a brand dream. Zagitova's work with Shiseido and Puma after winning the world title has reached a new level. Her value as an artist of ice shows and at the same time the demand went off scale. And then the natural thing happened.
Having plowed the last three years on her veins and going without rest to the fourth season, having time to train, perform, win, grow and turn from a teenager into a woman, advertise cosmetics, sportswear, Japanese mattresses and what not yet, Alina was plainly tired. Lost motivation to keep moving in blinders. She wanted to try to live, and not just to train, and only those who walked the same road in the same skates on bloody calluses can condemn her. But those who do share the same path, quite tellingly, never condemn.
“Before the pause in sports, I was completely zoned in: like a horse with blinkers, I looked only ahead. I had neither the strength nor the time for the rest," Alina Zagitova said in an interview with Cosmopolitan.
And then there was Trusova, Shcherbakova and Kostornaya who became seniors and now could quite legally beat the Olympic champion on all fronts. Not by the amount of spectators love, but by jumps, points and podium places. And it was actually painful even for such a calm person as Alina.
In 2020, Zagitova announced a pause in her career and for the last time was included in the Forbes rating of "40 most successful Russian stars under 40". She was eighteen - she was the youngest on this list. According to the publication, her income for the year amounted to $1.1 million, and for our figure skating this is an unprecedentedly large figure. You can compare Alina's income with that of Evgeni Plushenko. He took 38th place in the same list in 2022 with an income of $2.5 million, but his status, media activity and field of activity are still immeasurably higher and wider than those of Zagitova.
Much has influenced the further capitalization of the name of Alina Zagitova. The pandemic, on the one hand, drove everyone home and hit advertising budgets, but cosmetics and sportswear brands were riding it on and did not slow down - people rushed to exercise at home and paint their lips for a Zoom conference. So Alina's contracts were not affected by the coronavirus. At the same time, due to the cancellation of competitions, all the other current skaters received less attention, and Zagitova, you could say, remained the unsurpassed world champion for two years.
The current situation around Russia is not conducive to maintaining and increasing contracts with global brands. Puma and Shiseido suspended deliveries, sales and closed stores in Russia in early March. And although no official statements were made regarding the suspension of cooperation with the Zagitova by any company, it is obvious that advertising relations, if not broken, then are frozen at the moment. Perhaps for this reason, Alina Zagitova took up coaching - she recently held a master class for young skaters in Khabarovsk. Prior to this, she had a major similar event in Mexico in the fall of 2021.
Thus, Alina, in the four years after her Olympics, entered almost all areas of activity available to her. She has won a World Championship, a European Championship silver and several Grand Prix medals, tried herself as a coach, starred in ice shows, worked as a TV presenter, won glamour magazine awards, participated in political campaigning and earned several million dollars in product advertising with commercial giants.
She paradoxically managed everything and succeeded everywhere, practically without giving up anything. And as time shows, the decision to continue her career immediately after the Olympics was right for her, as was the decision to take a break after two years. Over these four years, the personal history of Alina Zagitova has become truly voluminous and interesting. She is not just a flat cardboard figurine of a “red ballerina”, but a living person with successes and mistakes, victories and defeats. And when our life returns to normal, all this experience will definitely come in handy for Alina.
