Alissa Sizzles into Third

French is one of the easiest acutely. Not saying that to take anything away from her, but French is notably easy, more so then spanish in many opinions.

HUH???!!!

I've studied French as a 2nd language and Spanish as a 4th... NO WAY is French easy (if you're talking about mastering it) - most French people I know even agree!!

And Spanish is considerably easier! Just a greater number verb endings and wider and more subtle use of the subjunctive can make it tricky.... but at least it's phonetic, and in general a much more "regular" language... (though my Spanish is not nearly as advanced as my French... maybe there's more to it I don't suspect yet...)

I loved Alissa ... so sorry she had the mistake in her SP. She had the performance of the day, IMO.

I am so completely underwhelmed with our new national champion
And Peggy describing her footwork as brilliant? Was I watching the right channel?
She skated 2 completely uninspired programs, IMO.
We're in big trouble at Worlds if she's the best hope we have.

Nymkfan5, I totally agree with you. Kimmie and Evan are cut from the same mold. Their arm movements are so distracting.

That would be the first time I have heard that form the FRENCH. And have known a few to put it lightly. My Last name is French, My families heritage is French / Russian. But honestly don't care much for it or the 'tude and the language I even received an A in. But I do recognize the difference between "Street" and Pairs. Proper is quirky but nothing like Korean, Mandarin, Japanese, etc.... not even close.

Same goes for Spanish, I dated a girl from an Island called Menorca, her Spanish was very different then the "Spanish" people in the states have come to know. There is a big difference between Spanish and Mexican IOW. Much like Tagolog having such a Spanish influence to it.

Tagalog is far more different with Spanish than Mexican Spanish is with Castillan--but funny you mention that--my Spain spanish friends understand most of my words, whereas my mexican friends cannot (when I speak Tagalog)...perhaps some of our words in Tagalog are closer (mani, the word for nut is one--the Mexicans use cacahuate, which I think sounds prettier than mani)

Back to topic--I love Alissa's music and her program. It kinda suits her. For the past year or so, we've seen her bomb, similar to the story of Sabrina (the movie she took the music from)...until she has this transformation. I hope this is the performance that gives her more confidence.

That performance was good for Kimmie and Emily, too. Although in the end, they still beat her, they know that Alissa is right there to take her place if she skates well and they bomb. I can bet they're "shaking in their boots" at this moment--

I'm sorry... following this off-topic thread (well not entirely off-topic, we're discussing what Alissa studies, and it's merits, right?...)

Granted, my experience with "French people" comes primarily (though not exclusively) from Quebec (and no, Quebec French, among educated classes, is not "inferior" to that of France... but that would be getting us further off topic...), and my Spanish experience from Mexico.... though in my French studies I was exposed to a "standard" version and often had teachers from France.
I got tons of A's in French in school also... and didn't know a thing about "speaking French" until I moved to a francophone environment...

Anyway, I'm not really trying to argue with you, just find the difference in perception interesting.

Mandarin I've begun to study, and from appearances it's not so much a difficult language (spoken) as it is "strange" to a western ear... but when you can get a handle on the sounds, it is actually a rather simple language in many ways.

Russian sure does seem complex though. Go Alissa! (see, back on topic!)

You got that right. Her performances so far have been lackluster... Third in the LP at Nationals, 4th at Trophée Eric Bombard, and 2nd at Skate America only because Mao Asada had a disaster of a performance that would have been called a meltdown had she lost a few more points and did not make it to the podium.

To do well at Worlds, Kimmie needs to step it up and do a program that's passionate, fiery, and free of jump errors.

This was just Nationals, and I think that the most important thing for a skater is to skate well enough to be included in US Worlds team. Nationals is not the right place to skate one´s best performance of the season. If that happens, the timing of training has not been successful. It is at Worlds (and every fourth year at Olympics) where a skater needs to peak.

Oh, I don't think so at all. I think Alissa is thrilled with her great performance and with making the podium in Spokane. Finishing 18th at Worlds next month, not so much. I bet she would trade her spot on the world team for a national championship in a heartbeat.

The national championship is the only figure skating event that is shown live on network TV in the U.S. The Grand Prix, Europeans, Worlds, etc. -- there is just no audience for it here (alas).

Remember, guys - I predicted Alyssa would finish a close 2nd to Kimmie - and since many of you feel that she did at least that well, I feel pretty good about it. As I post this, I have not seen the free skate telecast due to pre-emption by ACC basketball - but my ABC station is showing it on tape delay at 1 AM, about an hour from now, so I will watch it tonight.

Maybe, but even if she had won she'd still be going to worlds...and actually I think it might be a good thing she didn't win, because imagine if the US champion went to worlds and placed 15th that would be beyond embarrassing...

Meissner or Hughes would wear the US title well IMO and are good enough in the World to prove it. They are both top 10 World skaters at their best...and even not at their best

The AP columnist on Yahoo! sports echoes the same thing some of you guys were saying. IF Emily had not fallen on one jump, she would have won, yada,yada, jing, jing, jing. Phooey! IF frogs had wings, they wouldn't have to hop from lilypad to lilypad. Suppose I said "If Kimmie had completed that first combination, her margin would have been bigger. Nyeh, Nyeh!"

If you can say that Emily would have won if, if, if, yada, yada........... then I can say that Kimmie would still have won if, if, if, yada, yada........ .

Kimmie is just as entitled to a few IF's as Emily is, if not more. Remember, Kimmie has proven a few times that she's capable of a mistake-free long.
Emily has NEVER skated a mistake-free long as a senior skater. This Nationals was, up to now, the BEST performance that she has been capable of doing.

Hooray for Alissa! A beautiful, beautiful performance!
